I've never had super long labors and I need to FOCUS, but maybe it would work for those first few hours when things are just starting up.

I am working on my cards, waiting to see if I get any phone calls from Emergency Communications (since I'm a RN and a Ham Radio operator I get called out during storms). They say we may have power outages due to the hurricane - we lost power for 10 days with Hurricane Isabelle - so if I "disappear" from HYCCT that may be the reason.

Take care everybody!!

I remember Isabelle well. I left town with my six kiddos and came back when DH called to say that the power was back on. While I was traveling back, the power went back off so I still got to experience about a week of no power anyway! Praying for safety for all!

Just saw this on my fb feed and thought I'd share it here. My mom had always had regular mammograms but was 5 months overdue when her breast cancer was diagnosed. She also had been only sporadic with self breast exams so by the time her tumor was found it was quite large and had reached the chest wall and also involved some lymph nodes. We can't go back and there's no telling how earlier intervention would have affected her outcome, but it has sure made me more careful about keeping up with both monthly self exams and my annual mammograms.

Brenda, I hadn't heard about the school near you. Haven't had the news on all day. My DGD's school uncovered a threat the 3rd day of school in September. We were all on edge for a few weeks after that. DGD had to hide in a closet for 20 minutes. Why or why can't we just all get along and take care of each other....................

I am a 15 year survivor, and had so many problems back then. I developed a staff infection from the mastecyomy surgery and spent 3 weeks in the ICU because they were worried about permanent organ damage. The infection kept resurfacing and they eventually had to remove the implants along with part of a rib that had gotten infected. Eventually they redid the reconstruction. Funny thing is that it is all a blur now and I mostly remember the funny things....my youngest son was 3 1/2 years old, and everytime someone complemented me on my beautiful hair, he could hardly wait to announce that "mommy has a wig". He ended up wearing it a few years later when he dressed as a girl for Halloween. I did get one permenent prize for all the difficulties....the hair NEVER grew back on my legs or underarms! Good luck as you recover.

Oh Brenda,
I just got home from work where all we hear is elevator music. I read your post and just watched the news. My heart just breaks for all the families who lost loved ones. I can't understand all this sensless violence.

Hope You Can Cling To is a bit more sentimental for me this year. My niece went through a radical mastectomy in April and there was no one in her immediate family who could help her. So my DH and I drove to California and spent a week helping her recover. Then to make matters worse, her employer let her go before she was even scheduled to return to work. Their ploy was that after she was gone having surgery they decided they didn't really need an office manager! After looking into this with a lawyer, she is trying to receive compensation. My question is: WHO fires someone when they are in the middle of cancer treatment?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So this year i am dedicating each and every card to her. She is a fighter and will bounce back soon I am praying.

Shaking my head, Gayle. That's really sad, but people are greedy and only care about the money these days....Hopefully she will get something out of this. Geez

Oh Gayle that's awful. This will be a tough year for me too. My mom's 4 1/2 year breast cancer journey ended September 5th. She passed away peacefully at home with my dad at her side. My brother and I along with an aunt and a cousin were able to care for mom at home those last weeks and we had some really sweet times with her. Mom was able to enjoy so many wonderful "lasts" over the summer and in her final year. Her strong faith enabled her to be very peaceful and gave her such a strong testimony. The cards, emails, words at the viewing and funeral services all told of her life well lived. I miss her so much. I've been participating in this drive all along in her honor and all the more so this year. I was mom's personal card provider and she was sending cards out to others up until the final week. I know how much the cards will mean to the patients and their families.

Oh Gail, your story brings tears to my eyes. Your mom must have been an amazing woman. How lucky she was to have a daughter to help her through these past few years. As you make each card try to think of a happy or funny experience that you and your mom shared. My mom died 18 years ago from a minor bump to the head. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her, but a few years ago I decided to think of happy memories. One of my favorite memories was of the hideous sweater with the embroidered deranged squirl on it that she bought me when I was about 22. I didn't have the heart to tell her how bad it was...she usually had such good taste. I can still picture that aweful squirl glaring out from the sweater.

My mom also had a failed reconstruction due to a leak in her first implant. After the second implant she got a bad infection. After the infection cleared up the wound just would not heal. After all that she also ended up with no reconstruction. The worst part of it all as we look back on it is that that would have been the only time she had to enjoy being "cancer free" as not long after finally healing from it all she developed her first metastasis. I'm thankful for many who have successful reconstructions, but after Mom's experience I would never personally recommend it. So thankful for her that she is now free from all pain and whole and healed from it all. Cancer is an awful disease.

I love the idea of trying to remember good times-we were blessed with so many of those! I was able to go on one last trip with Mom to a family reunion mid August. Once she got back things went rapidly downhill, but what a sweet time we had to be with my dad's family.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories - of their own journeys and those of their loved ones. I had similar bittersweet experiences with my mother and her battle with leukemia, and can so relate to all of you! Love and light to one and all...

I actually made a card for Lydia's challenge, but didn't finish until about half an hour ago, so I'm waiting until daylight to photograph and upload it. I have a plan (and stamps picked out) for the second challenge, but the third one is stumping me a bit. Not to worry - I'll figure something out! A late start tomorrow, though - I have to work until 2:00. G'night, and see y'all tomorrow!

I think the stories in common are a healing part of the challenges each year. I always appreciate the chance to do something. So much of the time hearing about cancer I feel so helpless, but being part of the card drive is an opportunity to pour into the lives of people who're in the midst of something awful with a little bit of help and hope and encouragement and that's what its all about!
The Forums at Splitcoaststampers is always a fun bonus too. I'm seeing some good recipes in there already. The brickle cookies sound delish!
Sue, have you ever thought of making a light box for photographing your cards? I love mine....no more waiting for daylight. My pictures are consistent no matter the time of day or weather conditions. I used an old cardboard box for mine, but I think the foamboard might last longer. I just reinforced the tape on mine to help the edges firm up again-it had gotten a bit dilapidated!

I love how everybody joins together to encourage participation in the HYCCT challenges. Today's Forums at Splitcoaststampers ties in and the Forums at Splitcoaststampers could work as well. Fun that the challenges are posting early-looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with today!

I love the smell of homemade embossing paste. Hmmmm, maybe I'll run down and smear some on something to dry while I go walk the pooch.

Off to check out the Recipe Box. Can't make a lot of fun stuff yet with Gestational Diabetes going on (though it's been in good check, just can't eat sugar and desserts and heavy carbs!).
