Wink How are the weeds in your garden?

After all of this rain, hot, humid days, the weeds are monsters in my flower beds and around the trees. I tackled some yesterday and they almost strangled me!!

{giggle} I tackled mine last month and managed to keep up pretty good, until this last week. The dandelions have run amok yet again. I try to pull a few every couple of days, but alas they keep growing and blooming......

ARGH! They are taking over! Plus we've had contractors at the house replacing siding (it's a never-ending, nightmare project at this point) so I can't get out and around to weed like I usually do!

A weed is simply native plant growing where it wants to.

That makes me feel better about weeds.

We had a long dry spell here, then it rained. I guess that created just the right growing environment for mushrooms because they have sprouted up everywhere in my lawn and garden! I have never had this happen before. Mushrooms of all different shapes and sizes. I am trying to pull them out but they are slimy. And I swear the day after I pick them they are right back again. Weeds I can deal with. These mushrooms are awful!

The weeds in my garden have taken over. It is so disheartening to keep pulling out the same dang weeds over and over and over again all summer long. I surrender. Fall is almost here, soon it will be time to rotor-till it all under and begin anew next spring.

I have one word for you -- Preen. I'm all about the chemicals. I can't pull the weeds as fast as they grow. Once you get the weeds out, sprinkle the Preen in (available at Wal-Mart or other) and then water. You'll need to re-apply in about four weeks, and pull out any weeds that crop up in the meantime. After 3 or 4 applications (about 4 weeks apart, or as the instructions state), you won't need to apply as frequently because the weeds will stop growing . Preen keeps the seeds from sprouting, but doesn't kill established weeds. Once you get them out, keep them out, I say! I'm all about working smarter, not harder. I only put Preen in once or twice a year now (Spring & Fall) and my gardens are pretty weed-free.

Oh, and did you know that a weed seed can lay in your garden for 25 years and still be viable? Blech! I read that in one of my gardening books.

I know! I tried to get out there, and the bugs chased me back into the house! I just won't look at the weeds.

I second the preen! That is my new best friend this year. I cant believe how well it works!!!!

I have only put it on twice this year, and I have hardly none! YIPPEE! At least one horrible job is out of the way.

Cant help with the mosqitoes. All I know is to eat a TON of garlic.

well, this is the first I have heard of Preen and I am definitely going to get me some! I have filled a landscape trailer THREE times this summer with predominately weeds/grass from our gardens - with the very late winter we had that started the end of january I think the grass and weeds in the garden had a very healthy start!

I guess I did remove the over abundance of perennials too, and the usual prunings but man, the compost box is full again.

Can you use the Preen in the areas that have mulch over the top of the soil? I have grass/weeds sneaking in up through the mulch.

Yep! That is where I use it. You just sprinkle it over top, and it kills the ones that havent came up and it keeps them away for a nice long time!!! Anything over a day or two was good in my book when I first started. You have to get the weeds that are sticking up now, but the tiny ones will disapear. I have applied it probably four times this summer, and I rarely have one stinking weed!!! It is GOOOOD stuff, I tell ya!

Yah! Ok good. Off to get Preen for sure this time!

I found this icky chemical sprayer in the garage, with Spectricide and it has that carcinogenic look about it. And, smell. I really do not want to mess with that.

Just reading the label, and handling the bottle for a few minutes gave me a funny taste in my mouth. I think it better go to the toxic waste center.

I could not find Preen at our Walmart. They must be sold out. My situation is too far gone anyway! I ended up with spray stuff.

My question is, should I still try to find some Preen and get it on now? Will that help in advance for the spring? Or wait until spring and get it on first thing?

I would definitely get it if you can find it. Walmart should have it! Maybe they are just out of the season, like you said. The situation isnt to far gone, Im sure! Once you get the preen on there, it will kill all seeds. Im sure they will have it out by febuary to be able to apply it early in the season. Remember how overgrown my yard was when I moved in here. Those were some monster weeds and they are ALL gone!! YIPPEE! I had to give a few good doses, but I know I havent put any on for at least two months, and I have probably picked three weeds in that time

Anywho, just get it when you can find it, as long as it is early they will be long gone!! Good luck!!
