Virginia, Hampton Roads Area Stampers
Ok, I don't think that I am AT ALL qualified to start a get together but I sure would love to go to one if someone did have one...
Just checking cause I see lots of people's locations that are in VA (and I can see your locations...) and I don't have a stamp club or any stamping groups that I go to. I have only even been to one stamp camp when I 1st started stamping.
So, I am just "putting this out there" for anyone that may have experience organizing something like this
I would LOVE to help and I would have plenty of time to help!
And - Dirty Girl texasjodylynn is going to be joining us, if I can get this started;)
(Can you tell I am quite desperate to meet and stamp with actual human beings??)

I am not going to the regionals (not a demo and my sister/demo is moving to Italy so she can't take me, I think you can bring guests, anyway.) but I would love to do something like this. Problem is I dont even know what a showbox swap is and I am totally at a loss when it comes to stamping get togethers since I have only been to 1 stamp camp and it wasnt really fun:(

A "shoebox" swap is where participants sign up in advance. All people attending the shoebox swap will design a card and then cut all the paper and bring all the materials for everyone that attends to make your card. So, if there are 20 people attending, you would leave with 20 different cards completed. You would have a certain amount of time to complete each card and there would be socialization and perhaps a few other events thrown in there. Maybe door prizes, card contest etc. I have been to 2 and had lots of fun!
Let's do it. I am willing to help get something together. Do you want an all day, half-day, overnight, or just a couple of hours? Which time works best, evenings, Saturdays, or Sunday's. I work full time so am limited to these times. I will be going to the regional and several of the group that I get together with are already planning to stay overnight. More on that later.

Cool
I work full-time as well so the evenings or weekends are the best for me. Hopefully my sister is going to come home for Regionals so she will be there, too.
I will add this thread to my signature line so we can round up some more folks.
I am so excited to get together and meet some new people!
Wow! I want to come too! Sounds like fun! Unfortunately, my work schedule is a little more iffy- we do a rotation of four on/two off and I switch back between mornings and evenings. If I know enough in advance, though i might be abel to just take the day off!
Yes, Hampton Roads is about 45 minutes north of VA Beach -- it is right near Williamsburg also
Um, Joan, I think you mean Hampton, not Hampton Roads. ;) Hampton is a city on the peninsula, about 30 minutes from Williamsburg, while "Hampton Roads" is a name that city leaders came up with because apparently the "Tidewater" moniker that this region of Virginia has been known by for at least 100 years wasn't good enough. Half the time when you say Hampton Roads outside of this state all you get is a blank stare till you mention Norfolk or Virginia Beach, LOL!

Hey! I'd be interested in coming. I'm in the Hampton Roads area. Not sure I'd be any good at organizing but I'd like to help. 1st thing would be a location.
Hi, Liz-Mommaof3 just told me about this thread. I live in the area too, near Smithfield. I'm game, depending on when it is. I'll have to work it around my hubby's work schedule, since I'm a SAHM. I'm also a TAC demo, so can we make it not SU specific stamp stuff and supplies?
Depends on when we do this -- I'm job hunting at the moment, and whatever I find will likely take me elsewhere as pickings are pretty slim around here for positions in historic preservation.

You know, I can see your "locations" and I see some VA girls that could join us;)
Also, anyone that knows how to get a get-together started that can help with the details?? Cause I have no idea what to do to begin with!
First thing we have to do is find a location. Once we have a spot, we have to find out when it's open to us, and than pick the date. A church family life center would be good, even nicer if it has a kitchen. My son's preschool has a room like this, but it's all the way in Smithfield, so I can't see a lot people wanting to drive out that far. Outside of that, a hotel would have a big room, but we'd have to pay more for that.

Well, I live in Suffolk so Smithfield isn't that far for me!! My work schedule is the biggest issue I would be facing.......
How many people do you think we would have? Would we each bring a shoebox project or would someone plan several projects? Would we want lunch provided or do a potluck? How much would you be willing to pay to attend and what would you expect to receive for that cost?
I have been involved in planning several stamp all day events and am more than happy to take charge, just need a few more details in order to find a place to hold the event.
If we find out exactly where everyone lives that is interested, we can try to get a centrally located location so no one has to travel too far.

I am in Hampton.
Vickie A.
I think at this point, we really don't know how many would want to come. Liz and I were talking today, and we were thinking about places like the Rutians buildings or such. I guess there's one of Warwick, that had a kitchen. We were just braining storming on places like that and where we knew some where, that wouldn't be costly to rent out for a day. Meal planning would be worked out after we had a location, so we'd know if we could have a fridge or what not. I was thinking we were looking at doing a shoe box swap.

I think a shoebox swap would be fun and my first so I am looking forward to it
Thanks all of you for stepping up to help out with all the planning, just tell me what to do as soon as you know;)
Depending when & where, I would be interested in attending - if just to meet some new stampers. I do mostly scrapbooking, but have been getting into stamping the last few years.
People in apartment/townhome complexes where there is a club house can sometimes book it for an event for little or no cost.
I live in Newport News (Denbigh) and am considering signing up.

I do believe we are planning a "shoebox swap". I dont know if this can be done with scrapbooking since I dont know much about swaps but since you just started stamping it would be an awesome chance for you to get some new ideas and learn some new techniques.
I live in Suffolk and would love to join! (Hi Anna and Liz :mrgreen Date and time depending, of course. I am attending regionals but not sure if I am going Friday or Saturday at this point.

A shoebox swap is where each person attending designs a card. You will cut all the cardstock that it takes to make that particular card. You will put the sample card, all the materials used (brads, ribbon, cardstock etc) as well as the stamp set, ink pad, stampin' scrub, mist and ANYTHING ELSE needed to make that card in a "shoebox" along with the sample card and inctructions if it is not self explanatory. Each person arrives with their materials and sets up at a specified table (organized by the hostesses). Each person will move from one spot to another until you have made all the cards. SOme are faster than others, but when the timer goes off (predetermined amount of time), you move whether you are ready to or not. Then at the end (or during lunch) you can make up any cards that you did not finish.
It's a lot of fun! This requires a lot of organization. A venue needs to be booked and paid for. "registration forms" need to be drafted so that everyone coming can fill one out and send payment etc. I would suggest that you not reinvent the wheel (whoever is going to hostess). There are MANY gatherings that have taken place and it would be nice to just check out their forms/organization/method and work from there.
I hope someone can figure it out. It would be WONDERFUL if it could happen the weekend of regionals.
Vickie, do you have any idea for a place in Hampton? I was thinking of looking up some places in Ches, and calling them. I would think either of those two cities would be the middle for the majority of the area. Any objections on those two areas to look into a place to hold it?
