NC * Raleigh, NC Area Shoe Box Swap

I am hosting a shoe box swap for Raleigh, NC and the surrounding areas. Theme to be annouced ... give me your opinions please.

Date: February 6, 2010
*** Deadline to sign up will be January 28 ***

Time: 10 AM 5 PM

Location: Outside of Henderson, NC 45 minutes North of Raleigh, near I-85 and US Hwy 1 (I will send the address via PM after you register)

Bring: Food item to share

Anyone nearby is welcome; North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, etc.

Official registration form will be emailed to you after you sign up.

For those interested we will be having a silent auction for stamp sets and materials you wish to pass on to others.

What is a shoebox swap?

This is a fun swap that allows you to create a lot of cards in a short time, but only having to come up with one great idea of your own! Prior to the swap day, you will need to create a card and then make a kit for each person which contains all the supplies, as well as written instructions needed for them to create the card. The number of kits needed depends on how many people we get to sign up. I will limit the number of participants to 20.

***These cards should not take more than 10-15 minutes to complete.***

I definitely do not want to discourage challenging cards or cards showcasing new techniques. However, if your card is intricate and fancy you may want to pre-stamp or pre-assemble some items for the other stampers. You will need to make a completed sample of your card so everyone can see what the card is supposed to look like. Then each person will be able to complete your card and take home a variety of cards.

This is a full card swap. Cards should have a minimum of two layers and one embellishment. You need to supply all materials needed for your card. That means cardstock, ribbon, eyelets, stamps, ink, special adhesives, etc. All cardstock will need to be pre-cut to the size needed for your card. This not only saves you money, but the rest of us time. No vendor requirements on all supplies, but quality, thick cardstock is a MUST! No envelopes need be supplied unless your card is an odd shape.

Put all pieces needed to assemble one card into separate sandwich bags or kits. Include written/printed instructions for your card in your shoe box. You will not be demonstrating these, so please make sure your instructions are very, very clear so that even beginners can easily complete your card. And please be sure that your card can be completed in 10-15 minutes.

Put your original card, your kits, stamps, ink and anything else that is needed but not in the basic supply kit in a Shoebox or basket. On the outside please put your name so we know who made which project. You may want to cut a few extras in case boo-boos occur. Please label all your supplies.

Please bring a BASIC SUPPLY KIT to include: Stamp-n-scrub if you choose, scissors, adhesive, and whatever else you cant stamp without.

Bring your camera if you want to take pictures of the card samples in case you dont have time to complete all the projects.

YOU NEED TO BRING ENOUGH SUPPLIES FOR EVERY PERSON THAT ATTENDS THE EVENT TO MAKE YOUR CARD. Final count will be given by January 28.

A little about me. I have been stamping for over 15 years. I am married to a military man and we have our permanent house in North Carolina. It is a beautiful location in the country, with the main house built in the late 1800's. I look forward to meeting other stampers who are located in the area, and I have experience hosting many types of events, including shoe box swaps. We will be living there permanently in a few years when my husband retires from the military. Until then we visit our house regularily.

I also should mention that I have a lot of room if we want to make this a slumber party. We have four bunk beds, two air mattresses, hide-a-bed, queen bed, and at least one couch too. There is plenty of room for a couple other sleeping bags too. This is one of those nice big old farm houses, no room is smaller than 15 x 15. We are used to entertaining more than 30 folks for dinner (my husband is from here with a lot of family)!

urscrappymama 11-07-2009 11:19 AM

Subbing for now Andi! I'd love to attend, but have to wait and see when my DH will have his vacation time this year. I also have a 3-1/2 year old, who I'd have to find a sitter for. I'll keep in touch though! :)

tiggerificandi 11-07-2009 11:40 AM

Thanks for subbing. Hope you can make it.

njbaker 11-07-2009 03:27 PM

Well, I have to stay informed right????

imthenoni 11-07-2009 04:39 PM

Andi, what a great idea. I'm going to have to just sub for right now but didn't want to loose this thread. It sounds really great to me, just going to have to check scheduling. And your generosity to offer a slumber party as well. How much fun does that sound? Right? Thanks so much.

zviling 11-07-2009 04:41 PM

Not sure I can attend but I hope to...will have to get back to you.

One thing I might suggest, is having people make enough samples of their cards for the number of tables you will have. Like if you have 4 tables of 5 have everyone make 4 samples. That way each table will have something to look at. I am a visual person at that helps me way more than written directions. BTW...not an original idea...I've seen it at other shoeboxes I've gone too.

Anyway, I hope I can come...it sounds like fun!

njbaker 11-08-2009 09:23 AM

Hey Chris..... Andi hosted the swap that Kari, Gayla, and I went to a few weekends ago. It was very well run. There was no need for extra finished products as the sample always traveled with the shoebox. I hope you can make it... I think you would really enjoy it. AND ... if you go ... a certain "other" someone might just want to tag along!!! And, we may too?? LOL

snowcountry311 11-08-2009 09:37 AM

i hope i'm in that "we"

The one in Boston? Now, I'm confused...Andi where do you live? How did you host in Boston?

Gotcha about the sample travelling with the box...wasn't sure how it was going to work and was just trying to be helpful in case this was Andi's first hosting...

If you guys are in...I'm in!

njbaker 11-08-2009 09:53 AM

Yes, Andi moves around alot, her husband is in the military. They are currently stationed near Boston, but their family home is in North Carolina... pretty convenient huh??
So ... yes, we've (Kari, Gayla, and I) already met! AND...... (this is big) she's actually invited us again. She IS a glutton for punishment!!

have air mattress w/ travel !:p

tiggerificandi 11-08-2009 02:13 PM

You NYers are a fabulous group.

I am so glad you liked the way we run the swap. I think it is more efficient and keeps folks from waiting around doing nothing.

After seeing the house in Boston (rental) I am sure you will LOVE the North Carolina house! It is beautiful. There is a 63 acre pond in front of our big OLD (1800's) house up on a hill. In the winter you can see the pond through the trees. We can take a break to hike through the woods. We can visit my neighbors hourses. You can't see any neighbors house from ours, we are surrounded by hundreds of acres of woods. The only thing you can see is our out buildings and the guest house (my mother in law lives there to watch over our property).

I don't like to charge a fee, so prizes are not huge, but we do try to have fun. I am going down for a couple weeks in February, so I thought it would be a great time to have a "girls" weekend. I work from home, so that makes traveling back and forth a lot easier.

norway76 11-08-2009 02:57 PM

Oh, how I would love to come for a weekend to play with Chris... and Andi. But there are a few other weekend trips on the maybe list for this winter... so I doubt this will work for me, but of course I"ll stay informed and can always check last minute flights from Boston! ;)

Would you guys drive or fly? Just curious...

njbaker 11-09-2009 04:01 PM

I'm guessing drive..... have a bit of an economic crisis at home.

FLY!!! Well, guess that's just me. My crisis involves not very many flexible days off from work... I get plenty of time off, just can't pick it.

tiggerificandi 11-09-2009 06:27 PM

Well, I just hope we have decent weather, and a house full of yacking and papercrafts!

tiggerificandi 11-10-2009 04:23 AM

Wendy, I would love to meet the RTP group. Then if I am down there for extended stays I can meet up with some folks who have similiar interests.

I will be there for Christmas, up to three weeks probably. I am renting the quilting machine at the quilting store in Henderson to finish my husband's Christmas present on Dec 22. I haven't ever used one of those BIG machines before, and I am excited.

tiggerificandi 11-10-2009 04:05 PM

Bump.

tiggerificandi 11-11-2009 10:34 AM

Good afternoon to all you folks out there subscribing.

SayStampsPlease 11-11-2009 02:43 PM

Hi Andi *waving* Sounds like you've got a project in the works...for sure! lol I can't say that I have ever used a quilting machine, just my trusty ole sewing machine ;)

Give a hollar when your around and we'll try to work something out to meet you!! We've got a good bunch of ladies here :)

Yeah... I just gotta figure out who to leave Annabella with... but I definitely wanna go!

tiggerificandi 11-12-2009 03:49 PM

How old is Annabella? Normally I bring my built in babysitter. Our youngest, but I don't know if anyone else will be coming with me on this trip, as they are all in college. (Four kids in college and my hubby.)

One dog will be coming with me though. They love going to the country to hang out.

tiggerificandi 11-13-2009 06:43 AM

Good morning bump

tiggerificandi 11-13-2009 06:56 PM

I need to pick a theme for the shoe box swap. I was thinking about going with a birthday theme. Any opinions?

Birthday cards are probably my weakest...I always feel like they come out lame...but if that was the theme I would get all sorts of new ideas! :D So that sounds good to me!

Always need BD cards here :)

hlw966 11-15-2009 07:38 AM

Hey, I may just already be in the area with the family for a FL vacation... hmmmmm....

I'm subscribing to stay informed and penciled it onto the calendar. (I'm one of those crazy people like Gayla and Nancy and unfortunately missed the Boston one b/c of trick-or-treating with my daughter.)

tiggerificandi 11-16-2009 07:12 PM

Great to have another maybe.

The birthday theme would give us some ideas for birthday cards I would think. I will keep it open for the time being while we get other inputs.

snowcountry311 11-16-2009 07:21 PM

andi-would you like me to pass along some scs names? i jot them down as i notice them. and i have added a few from NC.
i would do so by PMs

tiggerificandi 11-17-2009 04:32 AM

Sure, thanks!

I am in Scottsdale Arizona for a conference for financial counselors(coaches). I saw a stamp store downtown, so I am going to head over there today since I have at least half a day off. It looked cool from the outside!

njbaker 11-17-2009 02:45 PM

What did you find good Andi??

I think I might be interested in this.... I loved the one I went to in CT at the firehouse, where I met Kari and Gayla. We now live in S.C. and this would be an easy trip. Please keep me in mind and I will keep checking in.
