Exclamation Central NYers Can't Stamp Together Enough! - 5/2/09

CNY SplitCoastStampers Get Together
Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
First United Church of East Syracuse, 823 Franklin Park Drive, East Syracuse, NY
Join us for a day of stamping fun!

It’s time to talk about our next Central New York SCS Get Together. Here’s the info:

Cost – $17.00 per person ($18 via PayPal). Your registration must be paid no later than noon on Saturday, March 28. Mail your registration form and payment to me. There are no refunds, but you may offer your spot to someone else. Here’s what’s planned.

Mandatory Swap(s) (just one is mandatory) – You’ll know how many to make when we post the final counts, and you’ll have plenty of notice since the deadline is well ahead of the event (and the registration deadline is only a month from now!). Participating at least one of these four swaps (see below) is part of the “price” of admission so everyone must participate in a swap (plus the shoebox table project, also required). You can, however, participate in any one, some or all of these swaps. Each of these swaps will include a +1 for a door prize. There are also some optional swaps, new this time.
  • Card Front Swap - Final Count - 23 Gayla (snowcountry311) will give you some guidance on this swap. See Post #6.
  • Recipe Swap – Final Count - 19 Nancy (njbaker) will provide more information about 6x6 recipes. Info is in Post #8.
  • ATC Swap – Final Count - 17 Kari (Norway76) will tell you more about Artist Trading Cards. Check Post #10.
  • SU! Demo Quality* Swap – Final Count - 14 Check with Janet (evilQmom) on this. See Post #11.
*This means only current SU! products can be used but you don’t need to be a demo.

Mandatory Shoebox (Table) Project – Bring your idea and all the supplies (precut but not prestamped or prepunched) needed for making your project with a small group. Again, current Stampin’ Up! products are preferred but other quality products are definitely acceptable. We’ll break the shoebox table projects into small groups. Our final count is in and there will be 4 tables of 8. Tables will be set up to stamp the day away. You will need to bring four extra completed shoebox projects (which includes door prizes, hostess thank you, and one for your table so that everyone can follow it for directions). Participation in the table shoebox project is mandatory. This project will generally be a full card, with layers and embellishment(s). Please provide any special adhesive that's needed. So, just to say it another way: Bring 4 completed projects + make up 8 packets of materials needed to make your project. (Plus see the note about the optional shoebox card swap below.)

Optional Swaps – These swaps have been suggested by some of our regular participants and since there were volunteers willing to head them up, I thought we’d try them out. These swaps are completely optional so it’s up to you if you want to play.
  • Shoebox Card Swap – Final Count - 10 Ginni (ginnijay) came up with this idea because she was wanting some of the other tables’ cards. I'm sure some of you do, too. This is the same card that you'll prepare for your table, but it is an extra swap. Ginni will give you details in Post #9.
  • 6x6 Technique Card Swap – Final Count - 16 Diane (diane617) is going to tell you about this in Post #7.
  • 3D Swap Final Count - Group A: 7, Group B: 6 – I volunteered Wendy (BearCollector) to head this one up because I know it’s been popular in Buffalo. She’ll talk to you in Post #12.
Food – We’re going to have sign ups for food and drinks again. Everyone enjoys sampling others’ treats at some of our other gatherings, so please indicate on the registration sheet what you will bring to share. (Also see note below about Make & Take for All.)

Make & Take for All – Earlier CNY gatherings featured several large group Make & Takes. If you would prefer to do this instead of providing a food item, please say so. Please pick one or the other (unless, of course, you want to do both!).

Garage Sale – Bring your stamps and stamping supplies to sell or trade. Current Stampin’ Up! items must be offered for trade only; you can sell retired items. Sorry but we can’t be responsible for missing items so bring things at your own risk.

Goodie Bags – for everyone! Everyone will leave with a bag of fabulous goodies. The goody bags are all the same value; there are just some variations in colors, etc. You are pretty much getting back in product most of your payment for the event because that's how I try to make things work!

Door Prizes - Everyone will also leave with a door prize, so you will want to plan to be there for the entire day. I was not able to work it out so that each door prize has the same value and I hope everyone is okay with that. Please, just be happy that we have so many prizes! We have donations from Diana Crick of Scor-Pal, Kim from My Favorite Things, Stampin' & Scrappin' Time in Bridgeport, plus many of our own attendees -- Gayla (snowcountry311), Nancy (njbaker), Susan (swebb), Sue (stamping sue), Janet (evilQmom), Arlene (arlenevita), Judy (Judy K). Am I missing anyone? Please do remember to say thanks to our donors.

Gift Swap – You don’t have to sign up for this one. If you would like to participate, bring a wrapped gift related to our stamping passion. We will draw for those so that everyone who brings one will also leave with one. Value on these should be about $5, and stamped projects are always appreciated! If it’s something you’d like to take home, it’s probably perfect! This swap will be done “Yankee Trader” style. Be sure to include your name somewhere inside so the lucky winner knows who to thank.

Other Stuff – Please bring your own labeled items for your personal stamping needs, especially your favorite adhesive. These are the items you just can’t stamp without, like: bone folder, paper cutter/scorer, scissors, straight edge, stamp cleaner and whatever else you can't stamp without! Did I say adhesive????? Adhesive! You will likely need lots of it.

Make and wear a nametag with your name (and your SCS name) so that we know you on sight. There may be a nametag contest so keep that in mind when you’re creating your nametag.

Don't forget your camera!

So complete the registration form and forward with your $17 payment ($18 via PayPal) by noon on Saturday, 3/28. All funds collected will be spent on the event .

Swapping etiquette -- Since we will all be swapping at least one item (card fronts -- info in post 6, demo quality card fronts -- post #11, recipes -- post #8, and/or ATCs -- post #10), I found some good general guidelines on SCS. I hope everyone will take these guidelines seriously so that we all make and receive wonderful swaps!

These are also good guidelines to keep in mind for your shoebox project, except that you're providing materials to make a full card rather than just a front and you won't need a "recipe".

1) Quality work -- This isn't about the quantity of layers or embellishments (please do use at least one embellishment and two layers), or whether you are new at this or not. "Quality" means straight cuts with no crooked, fuzzy edges, tears, wrinkles, etc. (unless that is part of the design), attaching your layers straight (again, unless part of your design), stamping images clearly with fully inked stamps, etc. If you make a noticeable mistake while stamping your swaps, turn the cardstock over, or cover with another layer. Last of all, quality means to use cardstock that is a nice heavy weight.

2) "Recipes" -- appreciated but not required. This means: your SCS name; your IRL name; listing the colors, stamp sets and embellishment you used; any techniques or tips you want to include. If you choose not to include a recipe, please include at least your name so we know who made your fab creation. Avery labels work great, but a plain piece of paper works just as well.

3) The only one of these swaps requiring all current Stampin' Up! products is the demo quality swap. All other swaps can use any quality stamps, cardstock, inks, etc. This is not the time to unload your cheap cardstock!

4) Would you like to receive your swap or make your shoebox project? Then it's PERFECT!

Please ask any questions you might have and someone will be sure to answer. We have all made a lot of great friends getting together at these gatherings so we hope you’ll join us at this one!

FOOD INFO: Please remember when making/purchasing your food item that you do not need enough to feed an army. There should be a very nice variety coming: donuts - cake - muffins - sticky buns - cookies - brownies - chips & dip - specialty dips - casseroles/main dish items - salads and side dishes - bread & butter - cheese & crackers - fruit - and more. Also, bottled water, coffee, assorted sodas and, of course, candy for the tables.

So, my suggestion is to make/bring a "normal" amount not a super size. I am sure there will still be leftovers but everyone should be able to find something they like. If you don't believe that to be the case, please feel free to pack a sandwich. If items to be served cold, especially the sodas, could arrive on ice that would be very helpful. There are outlets to plug in crockpots. There will NOT be a microwave available unless someone brings it!

REMINDER: If you are bringing something that is to be served HOT, please remember that there is NO microwave available. We will again have access to a refrigerator and stove (with oven). If you are bringing drinks, please bring them iced in a cooler.

DIRECTIONS to First United Church of East Syracuse, 823 Franklin Park Drive. Get the specifics from mapquest.com or randmcnally.com. But, generally speaking, most everyone will be taking Rte. 481 (from 81, 690 or 90) and exiting at Kirkville Road WEST (exit 5W). Franklin Park Drive is only about a mile from the exit and will be on your right. You will pass one light, two gas stations at the corner where the light is, and a school (Bishop Grimes). The church is just a short way up Franklin Park Drive and will also be on your right.

If you have headed in the wrong direction on Kirkville Road and get to that light, you will see a church on your left and houses on the other three corners. That's Fremont Road; turn around and come back the other way.

From First United Church to Stampin' & Scrappin' Time, Bridgeport - The easiest way is to turn left from the church parking lot, left at the corner, and left at the light which is at the corner of Fly & Kirkville Roads. Follow Fly Road to the end at Taft Road. Turn right on Taft and take it all the way to the end. Turn left at the flashing light which is Route 298. At the flashing red light (Rte 31), turn right and S&S Time will be just a few blocks ahead on the right. Total mileage should be ~10.

Default Shoebox Card Swap

SHOEBOX CARD KIT SWAP FINAL COUNT 10
This is new !

Have you ever wanted to make the cards they were making at the “other” table? Well, here’s your chance. For this swap you will use the same card design that you are using for your shoebox. However, this will be more of a kit since you will need to stamp and punch everything, since the recipient may not have that exact item at home. Please put each kit in a separate baggie, along with supplies, directions and a photocopy of the completed card so the recipient can decorate, color, embellish and assemble it at home.

Everyone who signs up, will get a kit from all the other members of this swap. So there IS a possibility if someone from your table signs up for this swap that you'll get a kit from them, as well as making their shoebox swap at your table. Since we randomly sit at tables, I don't know any easy way around that. I actually see that as a good thing because then I have a sample and the duplicate kit can be a card that I actually send!

Cards only please.

If you have questions, please PM me.

1. Ginni (ginnijay)
2. Robin (NY Triplet Mommy)
3. Darci (darcir)
4. Tina (tinyt73)
5. Rochelle (tlcchild2)
6. Kristie (klgross)
7. Arlene (arlenevita)
8. Becky (kewl-kat)
9. Cheryl (love2craft)
10.Gayla (snowcountry311)

3-D Swap, (optional item)

FINAL #'s are GROUP A: 7 and GROUP B: 6 (sorry they are uneven....)

Since 3-D items can be more involved and sometimes more costly, we will make smaller groups for swapping in this group. We will decide that later once we know the total number of people who want to participate. These 3-D items can be boxes, bags, frames, party favors, covered journals, notebooks and so much more. Check the SCS gallery for ideas. This is a great way to get new ideas for workshops or gift giving. If possible, please include a recipe or template, so everyone will have the pattern for your great project. The recipe/template is just a suggestion, not essential. Please send me a PM (BearCollector) if you are planning to join the 3-D Swap or have any additional questions. Thanks!! Wendy

Participants
Group A:
1. Wendy Groves (BearCollector)
2. Heidi (hlw966)
3. Gayla (snowcountry311)
4. Robin (NYTripletMommy)
5. Nancy (njbaker)
6. Pat (scraphead)
