Default Are you locked in a card dimension rut?

I was just wondering - I always seem to start my cards out with an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper cut in half and folded. Sometimes I feel in a rut and restricted to that little rectangle! Do any of you feel the same? And what size paper do you all start with? It's hard to tell by the little photos in the galleries.

I wanted to do squares for a swap, but the hostess said no. I think square is kind of cool. Yeah, if you mail it it cost more, but it is so much more creative. I don't remember the dimensions, I just usually cut to how I feel at the time. Sometimes 5 x 5 other times 4.5 x 4.5 ~ just depends.

I usually start with a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 card...if for no other reason than they fit my envelopes.

Lately, though, I've taken to cutting the angles differently

I'd like to do a circle card...maybe I'll put that next on my list of things to try.

HOW FUNNY! I just put up this post about working in a rectangle and up pops a cute new post of a little star card (by justheather) cut with angles. How coincidental is that?

sometimes i cut my paper in half lengthwise, it still turns out the same size, but the card opens from the bottom up. its a little different, but not much. at least it still fits in your envelope. i also like the square cards.

The other thing you can do is make the card 4 1/4" square and layer them with 4" squares of designer paper-that would be 12 cards from 1 designer paper piece, and still fit in a regualr envelope, just a little smaller. Hmmm-I make have to make some now. Maybe that can be my personal challenge for the night.

I like doing the long skinny cards (made for a regular legal envelope). It's different, but costs the same to mail. It does take a little bit more cardstock... but it's different. I like doing square cards too. I don't remember the last time I made a regular card.

Default layout rut

When I get in the rectangle rut, I cut my paper in half so that I have two halves that are 8-1/2 x 5-1/2. Then I score folds just a hair more than 2-1/8 on each side. Long way to say a tri-fold. Dimensions are the same (4.25 x 5.5), but it opens up differently and there are all sorts of ways to go from there.

I posted a square 4 1/4" card-and it was a thank You card! (wasn't that today's challenge?)

It will probably be a make and take as it was super fast and used 2 sets form the September 6 special. My customers like seeing new folds and I think this is so easy but looks more special, KWIM?

Thanks for the idea of moving out of my rectangular box! Here is the link, it's not posted yet (10:15 here) but will work once it gets uploaded.
