I just read the thread about unused craft stuff, and many people said they had given up other crafts so they could invest more time and $$ on stamping. So it got me wondering if we will ever give up stamping? I have spent so much money on this craft (as I just ordered more stamps today). It gives me a little shudder to think I might one day give this up or outgrow it.
I have been stamping for 11 years and I love it more now than ever. No I am not giving this hobby up. I have cross stitched, tole painted and tons of other stuff. I don't do any of those anymore. This is my thing that helps me relax and gives me a creative outlet. Plus I can make beautiful things to give to others. In my opinion it is my perfect hobby. I have spent thousands over the years on my stamping and I still use most of what's in my room. If there is something I don't want to use anymore. I sell it and get it out of there. I guess if you ever decide it's not for you then sell your stuff and move on.
I love stamping. It is much broader than people realize. There are so many different ways to stamp and mediums to use. With the awesome die cut machines that offers even more options. I think it is a hobby that is constantly evolving and sometimes the old will become new again, but a little better.
I have given it all up before, sold my inks, stamps, tools.....all but 3 stamp sets. I was out of the game for a year because I simply did not have the time or energy and felt guilty about it sitting around unused.
But I will never do that again. It was a huge mistake and I realized more how much I need the crafting.
I stopped stamping for almost ten years. BUT! I did kept my stamps, inks, embossing powders, glitter, etc. I did not have the space to stamp (younger years of apartment hopping). Then in 2000, I started scrapping and around 2004-5, I added stamping to my scrapping, and then I was back at the stamping all the way again. And today, I am thankful that I held on to all my old stuff. And believe it or not, more than 75% of my ink pads (dye and pigment) are all still juicy (I kept them in tubs with the lids on, I suppose that helped) and even the markers are too. So, nothing really went to waste. I didn't get rid of it though because I didn't stop because of lack of interest, simply time and space. I had a rather large collection then and now a HUGE collection with all that I've added as well as all my scrapping stuff too!
:>

These are both great.
I've tried different things - I really liked quilting, but my eyes aren't great for how exact you have to be in a lot of quilting, and it takes way more time to end up with something that's complete.
Stamping is also very forgiving of mistakes.

When I started stamping 12 years ago, I wondered if it, too, would be a passing 'craze.' I loved it, tho, and just thought I would ride the wave until it died. Well, the wave hasn't died yet, and I haven't quit stamping yet! Like some of the others have said, tole painting, counted cross-stitch and other crafts have come and gone for me, but stamping is my one true constant.
I really can't see stamping dying. If it has been around this long, it's still got a lot of life left in it.
I can't imagine giving it up! It has definitely cut into my crafting time and the other crafts, such as sewing and things has definitely slowed down, but i still do those too, just not as much and my craft room has been overtaken by at least half, by stamping supplies and work areas!
One of the best things about stamping is that it is quick. You can finish a project in a sitting. I have a cross stitch here that I have been working on for about 5 years!

This is exactly why I made the change to stamping. It is so much quicker. I plan to stamp a long, long, time. I've been telling my DH that all the money I've been spending is investing in my retirement. When I have less money and more time, I will stamp all the time. I plan to retire in May so my dream may be quickly coming true.LOL

I've been stamping for 6 years, knitting for 7, and quilting for 8. What I really love about stamping is that it is an instant gratification hobby(anything less than 3 hours is instant gratification). Knitting takes several days to weeks and quilting several weeks to months. I don't think I will ever give up stamping just how much I buy. I think it will have to be limited to the must haves.
Like so many here, I can't imagine giving up stamping. There will always be cards to send and thus to be made. And it is quick and easy, fits well into any lifestyle, and satisfies a creative impulse.
I've been doing different crafts since I was a child. When I was a teenager, it was crochet, embroidery and macrame. Latch hooking? Hated it.
Counted cross stitch was my first real love and that went for around 13 years before I got interested in something else and stopped doing so much of it. I still have a few things I take a bash at now and again, but mostly NOT.
Folk art painting was another one, but that lasted just a couple of years.
I did some weaving for a few years, but that is pretty time consuming. Spinning I did for a few years as well.
Knitting lasted for quite a while...about 12 years. I still knit, but not nearly as much as I used to. It has the advantage of being very portable and able to consume lots of time that would otherwise be spent doing nothing (doctor's offices, outside of school before children get out), so I doubt I will ever stop knitting entirely.
Quilting I have dabbled in, but it is also very time consuming. I used to sew quite a lot as well, not so much anymore.
Stamping...I started in October or November 1996, so it's been almost 12 years. It's already lasted as long as my other two big craft interests and I don't feel like stopping anytime soon. Usually I have two different crafts I'm interested in at any given time, but right now stamping/scrapbooking/papercrafts is the only one. So it will probably last longer. Unless something else comes along!
I have been at it for about 17 years. Before internet. You had to order stamps by snail mail or scope out stamp stores when traveling. I had been outside the USA for years and when I returned, I was shocked to find you could get stamps at home parties! I had one immediately! I signed with SU! about 2 months later. I am sure I won't give it up.

Of all the different crafts I have done, given up on or quit, knitting/crocheting, counted cross stitch and stamping are the ones I seem to alwasy go back to.
Besides, the $$$$ investment is far to great to *give up*! It may pay for my retirement though! LOL

no way! I was just talking about that the other night with my friend Lori! Besides i think you would see a white chalk outline of me in my studio if i did quit - my husband would kill me!

Well, I know that there is at least one person here on SCS who is planning to sell all her stuff and give it up. But I can't imagine doing so. I love making cards and am even starting to enjoy scrapbooking (though it's a much more laborious process to me than card-crafting!) And besides, the 'stroke' you get from heartfelt appreciation of a hand-crafted card is addictive! (Though I'm sure I could buy a new car with the money I'd make if I sold all my stuff!)
Putting ink to rubber, then rubber to paper is just so satisfying! I just got a stamp that says "Stamping is an addiction and a therapy all rolled into one!" by INKADINKADO. That says it all.
If I stopped, it would have to be health-related; arthritis in my hands, eyesight going bad, that kind of thing. And maybe I could still stamp, just more slowly and with great huge eyeglasses ;-)

No, I really don't think so. I've been stamping since 1989. Oh, there are definitely times I'm more into it than others, but I still stay with it. I've always, always loved papercrafting and don't see that ever changing.
As others have said, I've had many hobbies over the years and some are still around -- mostly knitting and quilting. They're much more time consuming though. Not the nearly instant gratification of creating a card or scrapbook layout. Over the years my cross-stitch, tole painting, folk-art pieces, have all fallen away but I'll always stick with my papercrafts and rubber stamps.
I've quit and come back more than once. I think a lot depends on what is going on in your life. Right now, I am in an upswing and have created three cards in the last 24 hours! I have a lot of other hobbies too but like it was said before, this one is instant gratification!

This is me too! My kids just look at my stamping stuff and say, "Mom, are you ever going to stop stamping?" and my husband looks at it and says, "Honey, you better never stop stamping." I have to admit that I love this hobby in a way that I've never loved a hobby. In fact before this, my hobbies were cooking and reading so there wasn't really much creativity to it. I still enjoy those things, but not like stamping!
I don't think I'll quit, but I've taken extended breaks before. I like to try new things, and clear out the old. So I've sold lots of stamps, and then picked up again. Not because I didn't like stamping anymore, but I just wanted to refresh and recharge. I also really love to sew, but when my four-year old started refusing to wear any of the outfits I made, I picked up my papercrafts again. I'm also obsessed lately with getting my photos into albums, so that's really been motivating my scrapbooking interest.

I'm in the process of getting rid of all my stuff right now!
Wow, you getting rid of the stuff you just got a couple months ago??
I know it happens, a friend of mine bought most of someone's inventory for pennies on the dollar. Tons of stuff. Part of me wishes I had at it, part of me is glad I didn't. LOL

I could see giving up stamping for quilting/sewing. The one thing I love about creating with fabric is that you make something that will last for years and years, something that is useful as well as beautiful. When I give cards I'm sure they sit on the mantle for a couple weeks and then end up in the garbage. I still enjoy stamping & buying stamping supplies, but if I had to choose (and I should due to lack of funds) between quilting and stamping, I'd probably pick quilting.
I don't think I will ever give up this hobby. It is so relaxing and the people I send my cards to really enjoy them.
Gas and groceries have put a dent in the money I spend purchasing new things. I have joined several swaps and Wish RAK in order to receive new items without spending a lot of money. I also find I am using more of my supplies because of participating with swaps and Wish RAK.
If you just ordered new stamps today, I don't think you will outgrow this craft any time soon. Put those bad thoughts out of your head and keep on stamping.
Take care,
Kisa

It is so great to see how long others have been stamping. I think the longest (so far!) is 20 years. That is awesome. I love to stamp. Don't make enough time for it but couldn't imagine not doing it. As my husband says "It keep me out of trouble"!
