Default Whoa! Paper Crafts are "White Trash"???

http://gawker.com/news/brand-extensi...ale-255248.php

This writer feels that papercrafting is for "white trash" women and one of the commenters says that "scrapbooking is NASCAR for fat women"! I was appalled!

The other article (link was at the bottom of the page) calls papercrafts "dowdy." Just wait till I get my hands on these guys! I guess I could tell them a thing or two.....

Well that hurts...I wonder if we should mention the career women who are scrappers...maybe us teachers or SAHMs wouldn't make a difference in their opinions of us (we are just doing women's work  ) but I know we have "real" career people here too. I, for one, am very insulted. But what was that saying from when we were kids? I believe it was: Takes one to know one!

All i have to say is WOW..... Maybe the writer should try Stamping and Scrapping and see how much time and money and thought goes into the process..I guess i will Proudly Stand up and say" I must be White Trash because i am Addicted to Stamping......

Oh how rude and uninformed. The article asks: "What does the domestic-arts maven see in a dowdy industry where merchandise is sold in cluttered stores stacked floor to ceiling with pipe cleaners, Styrofoam balls, glue sticks, beads and fake flowers?"

Well, that's not like any craft store I've been in! Where the hell has the "dowdy" image come from?

I see it mentions scrapbooking and "papercrafts" - cardmaking itself isn't mentioned. Are cardmakers next in line for a roasting I wonder?

I must admit to having a chuckle at the "decoupage shed" quip though!

Can't comment on Martha's line of stuff as we won't see it here in the UK and I may not have bought as I'm a confirmed cardie as opposed to a scrapper. But from reading the comments that have been left - I see that MS is not universally popular. I suppose Martha is one of those people that is loved or loathed.

I never take anything like this too seriously. I have done different kinds of crafts ever since I was in elementary school. Some crafts come into style and go out of style. I truly wonder what an "upscale" craft is, if not stamping, considering I can crochet or knit a blanket for $6 but need to spend $40 to make a few cards (at least that's what I tell myself!).

White trash is such a funny term, anyway. Such silliness to put out on the internet.

Some of those reader comments were pretty brutal. I don't understand the need to say such nasty things and put people down when you don't even know anything about the subject, or the people involved.

I can't believe this article! I am a professional career woman, I manage my own 8 million dollar book of business at work, travel a lot, do marketing, and when I come home at night, I love to make cards!! You can just call me business suit by day and as soon as I get home, I put on my sweatpants, t-shirt and get to stampin!

These sorts of things are intended to be so inflamatory, and I just roll my eyes and continue to have fun. Some people need to put others down to make them feel better about themselves, and some people just love to smack down others for the heck of it. It sure gets them lots of attention, but the karma payback may not be much fun, LOL!

Just think how sad it is for these types that they will never know the joy of a well-placed embellishment or finding a perfect color scheme or the wonderful sound of a stamp being pulled away from paper and leaving the perfect image behind....

Now, back to my time-frittering.:-D

There are many professional women here who love to stamp and scrapbook because it relieves the pressures of the job, though at the moment I am not feeling pressure. It is a quiet weekend. What we should tell our children, this is you (picture of them), this is you without education (point them to those drips).
All of our kids would become educated, lol.

Wow. I mean I can kind of understand some random female that fritters her time away writing pointless inflammatory blogs. But the Wall Street Journal has just lost my respect. I would almost make bets that some of the people are misquoted. I'm tempted to call the gal they quoted from the Salem store. After all we do have brands in scrapbooking and I can name several right off the top of my head. EK Success, Ellison, Fiskars, Creative Memories, Stamping Up, K & Co, Xyron, and Memory Makers just to name a few. Also as for scrapbooking not being a very sexy industry where does someone writing for a buisness paper get off from publishing that kind of quote. I mean seriously I don't think buisness is very sexy either. My business sterotype is fat old guys in suits.

Who gives a rip what these people think? There will always be someone who thinks our craft is stupid or who thinks that I don't live in the right neighborhood or thinks I shouldn't wear sandals because my second toe is longer than my first. Who cares?

The truth is this craft brings me joy. When I am creating something pretty, I can feel God smiling over me. I love the process of picking out colors and designing a layout and choosing what stamps to use. It makes me feel like an artist even though I may not be one.

I will not give anybody the power to steel my joy over something that makes me happy. To this person I say, so what?

It's like anything else.... speaking on something and forming an opinion without having experienced it in any way at all. It's risky business to do that on anything... you know, "walk in someone's shoes" and all that....

Hhhmmm...my husband used to work on "Wall Street" and is still in financial sales. I love paper crafts and he thinks I'm kind of "sexy" and I feel the same way about him...especially in a suit ;) And I'm in the process of designing some cards for his customers...maybe this guy should have talked to me first!

And I'm not sure that Martha is my standard for "sexy". Although if I could bake a cake like her I'm sure my DH would ravage me! heehee

I read this thread, then looked at the Gawkers article, and the WSJ artcle. Hmmm...

Gawkers is a Blog. A slick one, with advertising, but not, IMO, a "real" publication. It looks like a concept site made up and run by people who work in the advertising/marketing industry.

Um, and I don't think they take much very seriously, except for themselves, perhaps -- just take a look at their FAQS!

In other words, they want to poke fun at Martha AND her penchant for trying to turn anything into a "good thing". Lover her or hate her, she DOES have control issues.

Cheers.

Happy Stamin' ladies!
