Default When making items with Peppermint Patties...

I just wanted to let everyone know about something that is happening. I know a lot of people here use the York Peppermint Patties and cover them with a scallop punch piece of CS. Well, check this out...

http://www.teamster.org/08news/nr_080409_2.asp

It seems Hershey's is moving their operations to Mexico, costing 260 PA employees their jobs. I am not trying to make a political stand here, but I think this is terrible, especially with the US economy the way it is now.

I just wanted to point everyone in the direction of Pearson's Mint Patties. They are equally as yummy! Maybe if we all used Pearson's instead, Hershey's would see that we aren't happy with their decision.

I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I was upset to hear this happened and wanted to share.

Kelly, Thanks for the wonderful suggestion. I live 15 minutes from Hershey and know many people who work there. So if I can do one small thing to show Hershey corporation that we are not happy about their decision, I'm happy to do that.

oh crumbs! Well I will do my best not to... I'm fed up with all the out sourcing of jobs, out of the country... Just how are people supposed to "afford" to pay for things if their jobs have gone out of the country?

I have yet to trying making something with the mint patties. If I do I will try to find a different brand than Hershey. I cannot remember who was in office when NAFTA passed but it was a HUGE mistake. My dh worked for GM and you all know what is going on with the auto workers. Come on America it is time to take this country back.

That is so ridiculous! In my mind, I equate Hershey's chocolate as one of those all American things...guess not anymore. I've had the Pearson's mint patties and yes they are just as good. I just don't run across those as often. Thanks for letting us know about this.

Good info - I think the Pearson ones (and you can correct me if I'm wrong) come in the big bulk plastic jug things (yes, that's the technical term for the container) at Sam's Club or those bulk buying places. I'm not sure if I've seen smaller packages of them, but I guess it depends on where you live and what your store sells. I don't see any difference but I think the Pearson ones are a bit thicker (and chocolate and mint together is good no matter who makes it!).

Clinton. And, I'll never forget Ross Perot with his little pointer saying "SCHLOOOOP! That will be the giant sucking sound as jobs go to Mexico." He tried to tell us. BTW, the quote is my own paraphrase.

Yup, but it started with the first Bush.... no need to place the blame on one president and one party when both where heavily involved.

from wickpedia:

NAFTA was initially pursued by politicians in the United States and Canada supportive of free trade, led by Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, U.S. President George H. W. Bush, and the Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari. The three countries signed NAFTA in December 1992, subject to ratification by the legislatures of the three countries. There was considerable opposition in all three countries. In the United States, NAFTA was able to secure passage after Bill Clinton made its passage a major legislative priority in 1993. Since the agreement had been signed by Bush under his fast-track prerogative, Clinton did not alter the original agreement, but complemented it with the aforementioned NAAEC and NAALC.

If you think this is bad you should read about the 'corridor' that is being planned as we speak from Texas up to Canada......a huge highway for trucks from Mexico to cart their goods up here. It all goes along with the ultimate move to remove borders between us and Canada and Mexico. Awful,,,,just awful!!

I know that you can get them by the bag in the drugstores near my house. I haven't looked at Walmart specifically for them, but I seem to remember seeing them there too. They taste the same, but as another poster stated, they are a little thicker than a York. And to me, the bigger the better when it is candy we are talking about!!!

I am generally a fan of the Pearson's patties anyway since they are 2 for 1 weight watcher point- york are 1 point each! So you'll be saving calories too!
I get them locally at Save-a-lot.

Just a FYI........Hershey is closing their plant in a small Ontario town here in Canada as well. 500 people will be out of jobs as the plant closes after 44 years.

Thanks for the info!

There's a Hershey plant here in the Shenandoah Valley, about 15 minutes from where I live. I haven't heard anything about any job closings there; in fact, if I remember correctly, they were recently advertising for a Quality Control position and I thought, "wow, do they have to taste test the candy?" LOL

(Trivia note - it's been said that the plant here is where the Reeses Pieces used in the movie "E.T." were made.)

They just closed a big plant in Northern California last year also :(

I have found these Pearson mints at Walgreen's also and they are almost always cheaper than the York mints

 of all the Walmart suggestions - I know many people that would never set foot in a Walmart because of its trade agreements... As a friend that lived in former Communist Romania said to me (I will paraphrase) - why would I want to support the communism I escaped.

I'm actually shocked at the world's "support" for the Beijing Olympic Games as well:?

I know, Walmart is a whole other issue. Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, I have to shop there. Their prices do save me money. I keep telling myself how many jobs they provide for Americans, that is a plus.
