I would love to get these cards if anyone sent them to me--I think they look pretty good!
I am a newbie-still in my first year, and I can tell I am improving. I have several of my first cards still, and sometimes I shudder looking at them, but the growth is happening!
I give so many cards out, and I so love doing them. What a wonderful hobby!
I just don't know that many people who make cards too so that I may get a nice home-made card every now and then!
I am learning so much!! These cards may not be your favorite, but I think they look great!

Well all those 'disasters' are a gazillion times better than this one

And as for the sympathay card I've attached - its one of my first ones (back in the days when I only had stickers and NO stamps!!) and the photography is just stunning!!

I do! I do! Except I've been stamping for 8+ years so I don't exactly qualify as a newbie. Blush.

perhaps not *bad* - but maybe they didn't quite 'work' the way we wanted them too.

And I know that the early ones don't count as bad - it's just fun to see how much someone can improve!

Well, this is going to be the stamping version of a horror movie, but you asked for it... the sad thing is, some of these weren't that long ago!

This one... just goofy. Me no likey. Why would I put a neon ribbon on a baby card?

Here, I 'discovered' a technique that was better left buried.

This one hurts even my eyes. Who would want to receive this card?! And those ribbons... blech.

This one just feels drab and sad. It depresses me to look at it.

I threw a random shade of pink on one of these pigs, and it ruined the whole card. But I didn't feel like starting over again. I should have!

There are many, many more that I'm not fond of, but these are the first ones that made me blanche when I looked through my gallery. Enjoy laughing at me!!!

I think what the gist is, is that all of us, no matter where we started, or how long we've been at it, can look at our own work and know that gut feeling of "BANZAI!!!!" (when we know we nailed it), and "Hmmmm. That really no worky at all!" (when we know things are just not quite right with the piece).

Many or most stampers are "indies"; no formal training or education in art or design, and that in itself, to me, is a remarkable thing!

I do sometimes envy those that recently started stamping--their growth rate is phenomenal in a much shorter span of time, due to all that is available now, that wasn't when I started 14 years ago.

We all learn. We all grow. We all improve. And, so, we continue.

What a great ride it is!

I know that's what impresses me about a lot of stampers. I know I haven't had an art class since 6th grade.

And I will say that it threw me for a loop when I got my first Copic markers and was reading up on how to use them. They were discussing color theory and such - y'all know I've never looked into any of that! I just know what I think is pretty together, lol!

Ok, I'll bite. I need a trip down memory lane in my gallery - maybe it will inspire me to create something today!

~Here are a few of my personal "dislikes" from my gallery.~

This one should have stayed in the 'box'!

Not sure what I was thinking or trying to create here.

I think this is just odd looking.

And this is pretty ugly - but it has a lovely brad though.

Was trying for snowing and blowing here, but it really just blows.

And I know ya'll are just jealous of me because you didn't create this or this!

Hey, I CASEd that card for the Featured Stamper challenge! I'll have to admit, Emily, that some of those cards gave me a chuckle, especially the geometric Christmas card. But hey, most of my gallery would be in this thread.

I think it's interesting that some of the older cards from the ladies who have been stampers for several years really reflect the looks of the cards in the older SU! catalogs.

Just my 2 cents

I just have to say thank you to you wonderful ladies that are sharing those photos. Sometimes I look at your cards and I think I can never in a million years do that and then I see that every card you make isn't perfect. It's like in my gossip magazine about the celebrities "Their just like US" Sorry I totally couldn't help that!

I love everybodys cards, you gals are very talented. I will take your toss outs anyday.

Interesting thread, enjoyed looking at all the "mistakes", when you look at your cards now, do you see what you can do to improve the mistake? A lot of these that you've shown us wouldn't take much to improve them, if that is what you want to do, and a lot of them don't need improvement as far as I can see. It is also interesting to see what you did and what and where you are today in your creativity. Gives the rest of us, "not famous" stampers something to work towards, right gals?

My preferred style is clean and simple. So one great tip I keep in mind is a quote by Coco Chanel. She said "Look in the mirror before you leave the house and take one accessory off."

When a card isn't working, I try taking away layers or embellishments rather than adding.

Other things I keep in mind or ask myself when a card isn't quite right:

- Is the focal point cute all by itself, or am I trying to "save" it with the rest of the card? If the focal point/main image isn't cute, start over.

- Is it balanced? I like to set it on a shelf and look at it from across the room. You'll spot flaws that you may not have seen up close. I also look at it upside down and in a mirror, it really does help to see if it's balanced.

- Sometimes I just resign myself to the fact that it may have been good in theory, but it's not working out. I toss it and work on something else. I don't want to waste time following "dead ends".

Over-complicating a relatively simple concept is what usually leads me into design trouble. I've learned that my better designs are ones where I use a lighter hand, as opposed to a heavier one; instead of 3 techniques, focus on one, etc.

I would remake any of my designs that I previously listed, all over again from scratch and make pretty massive changes because I view them as examples of what NOT to do in the future, if that makes sense?
