Default What embellishment and/or style isn't YOUR style?

I was at Michael's tonight & saw colored staples. I'm not crazy about staples on cards, maybe because that's how my kids attach any paper together (that & lots of scotch tape). The colored staples don't make it any better for me.

Any embellishments OR card styles you don't like?

I don't like anything cutesy. No teddy bears, fairies, mice, etc. for me. I prefer a look that's more sophisticated, like the stamp sets in the "vintage" section of the catty. I know people who scrap and stamp with young kids in mind use the more cute sets and styles, but that's just not for me. Give me my regals and earths over the brights or subtles anytime. I'm specially crazy about the distressed look that's all the rage right now. Just can't get enough of that!

I'm not a fan of the funky fibers. Eyelash and chunky boucle' yarn never did it for me when I saw it becoming popular in the knitting and crocheting world, and I honestly don't like it any better on my cards. I prefer simple, uncluttered card designs as well, and just can't get into the incredibly elaborate, took-an-entire-evening-to-complete cards.

The moment I saw the title to your post I immediately said out loud: STAPLES.

Much to my surprise, when I opened this thread to read it, what do I find??!? I'm not alone! There are other people who don't do staples too!

I use staples, but I use them sparingly and very infrequently.

First of all, any sort of staple should never be used on a scrapbook page. I have a Master's Degree in Library/Archives and I've seen the damage first hand what staples can do over time.

Second, I just can't seem to make them not look messy. Very few people can use staples appropriately - LunarLana is one of the staple pros and I admire her staple-intelligence.

I also don't do "cutesy" either.

I don't like the staples or collage style. I'm not a big fan of "foo foo" ribbon, either. As a matter of fact, my style tends to be mostly stamping rather than embellishing at all. I love a faux layered look or just simple layers.

I can't do the staples either, but I have seen a couple of people on here who can.

I'm not a fan of the latch card or the spinner card. I can't really say why, but I have seen just a few that I like of either style. Just me.

Default Things that aren't my Style.

I would have to say I'm not much of a vintage/collage person. I'm not a big fan of the distressed look that is so popular right now. I've never cared much for tags either and that is a trend I've seen for several years now that I doubt is going to die anytime soon. I didn't think I was a cutesy person either until I decided I liked loads of love and best of cluck. I also enjoy house mouse stamps.

I am not a big fan of sewing on cards! I like the look of it, I just will never do it myself, it's too much trouble for me! (I may try the faux stitching at some point, but I am not even ready for that!)

Ditto to everything she said!!!

I don't like the cutesy look. I'm also very cautious with pastels. I was never a froo-frooey girl that loved pink/lace (although pink is now one of my fave colors since DD entered my life last year!!!).

Thank goodness...someone else who hates staples as much as I do! I like everything about the Shabby Chic tech except for the staples and the silly ribbon flags.

I'm trying to think hard of something I don't like, but honestly I can't. There are certain things that come out or make there way in to the stamping world by a technique... and it takes me a long time but eventually I warm up to everything. Took me a long time to warm up to acrylic paints..however now I'm loving them. I'm always a slow to warm kinda gal. Sometimes I start liking something as the fad is on it's way out...but still glad I had a try at it! LOL

It's been fun reading everyone's responses, it's neat to see what an eclectic bunch we are!

Wow! Can I just say, Me too, Me too, Me too?! I agree with mostly everyone . . . thumbs down to:

Staples (Messy AND they'll rust all over your scrap book page!)
Frou Frou Fibers (Grosgrain, Hemp, and the new linen thread is all I'll do)
Cutesy is NOT me (Fishy Friends is the ONLY cute thing I have)
I love the LOOK of vintage -- but I just can't DO it (wish I could)
I DO like the ribbon flaggy things and have been buying grosgrain like CRAZY so I can do more of it

Thank you! I hate staples. Looks sloppy and like a big mistake to me! I also don't really like crumpled paper look, except in rare cases.

Certain looks require more talent, if you know what I mean. I love collage, but can't do it. I really tried but it was a disaster!! However, I've seen some that I loved.

I think I'm more of a clean simple look person.

Colored staples haven't made it over here yet, thank goodness. I don't really dislike anything except cute animals like hedgehogs and mice.
What I do dislike is things in inappropriate places, so maybe something like a spinner on a vintage card.
Now I've started I'm finding loads, lol, I hate frilly and fussy like lace. I can't see the point of stitching on cards unless it is fake, life is too short. I can't even sew badges on my son's beaver (that's little scouts) uniform, let alone sew on cards.
I don't like flower fairies, they freak me out.

I have to agree with staples! I stated in another post that we should consider the recipient when designing cards. I think most non-stampers would think that using staples on a card was a sign of shoddy workmanship. I've seen very few cards with staples that didn't look "thrown together".
I do like ribbon "flags", but prefer to attach them with eyelets or brads, to glue the ends under a layer, or tie them on. I don't like frilly, overdone bows or lots of fiber.
The collage look is hard to pull off well, and there are only a handful of stampers who can do it with success. When done right, it's beautiful....when done poorly, it's a mess!
I can't say that one style or another is "not my style" because I don't think I have a particular "style". All kinds of sets from elegant to cute to funky appeal to me for different reasons. My stamp collection is very ecclectic.

Staples. It looks to me like the person thought "hhmm I need to adhere this somehow" but can't be bothered and just staples it. Looks weird. My husband saw a card in the gallery when he was walking by once and said "go back, were those staples?". He doesn't care for the look either.
At least use an eyelet or brad or something.

I don't care much for the shabby chic look, I don't really like anything to look distressed, crumpled, or torn. Just not my style. I like things to look neat and orderly, with lots of layers. As far as color is concerned, there aren't any that I don't like. I'm really starting to like gingham on everything.

I guess staples is what I would have to say. Although, I have seen some work done with staples that really look nice. Most of the time though I think it looks like someone lost their glue or something and just stapled it on. I really like most things. I think any style that is done good, I like. I am one that I think I have to at least try everything for some reason. My stamp collection is also eclectic. I guess it depends on who I send the card to as to what I like that day. As long as it is done nice.

Thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou THANKYOU!!! *lets out huge sigh of relief* I thought I was the only one.

Tags the way I see them most often published don't really do it for me. I really dinna care for ribbon flags, either. While I don't put the pressure of 100 years on any of the layouts I make, the chagrin I feel looking at my stylin outfits from the 80s in old photos inspires me to steer away from such strong trends and looks in my scrapbook layouts. And because I make cards from my SB supplies, my cards follow the same sensibilities as my layouts.

Guess I'm the odd one out here... I like staples when done with careful thought and planning. I didn't like them at first, but there are a lot of things I didn't like before I used them such as eyelets! I LOVE eyelets, now.

What I don't like for sure: SEWING (can't keep a button on anything! So there's no way I'm letting it frustrate my hobby!), FIBERS, SPINNER cards, and WIRE.

But, I'm so glad that we are all different in our tastes. Our world would be so boring if we were the same

My first thought was staples as well, but only if they aren't centered, otherwise they look nice. Fibers, in small quatities are ok.

What I find funny is I have rolls and rolls of ribbon, I horde it. But... how often do I put ribbon on cards? Very seldom. Go figure.

Looks like I'm odd, too, as I LOVE staples - but only coloured ones. I agree they can look a bit shoddy, but I hope I'm careful enough not to fall into that trap. Also love the ribbon flags and am delighted to discover they have a name!

But I have been quite slow to warm to the shabby chic look. I hated it to begin with; thought DTP looked dirty or like someone had dropped the ink pad, but now I see its benefits (namely, it's a great way out if you do actually drop the ink pad!).

Absolutely LOVE fibres, too! Find ribbon a bit twee, so fibres are great for me!

I'm afraid I've never been a fan of the vintage look - in fact, I used to skip that section of the catalogue totally - but, strangely, I'm coming round to it. A bit. Only a tiny bit.

What I'm not keen on are buttons (unless they're tiny), lacy things and slushy sentiments (I'm too British to stand for that kind of nonsense! )

But I'm always willing to make huge U-turns if I see a sample I like on SCS! It's odd, when I started stamping I hated nearly everything I saw - couldn't stand ribbons, loved everything totally plain, couldn't bear cute... and my cousin, who introduced me to stamping, was the total opposite. Over the years, we have both changed - my stamping has got more detailed and "fluffy", and her style has toned down, until we have pretty much met in the middle. Much more convenient as we no longer have to lie about how great each other's projects are!

Anything too country, or fuddy duddy or extremely technical turns me off.

I saw this really cool company at a convention where you stamp out a pattern and assemble a 3-d card ( eiffel tower, a pear etc...) they look neat, but I would never get it done...

I also really try and stay away from teddy bears and kiddie stuff, but I think everyone has something that is not for everyone else. I personally do not like most of the stamps in the SU that are solid and have squiggly lines drawn thru them...but there are thousands of other people out there that think that is the coolest thing ever...

I also don't make religious or patriotic cards, but have seen many that are fantastic...just not my genre.

I personally love collage, but my collages tend to be on the more avant guarde or weird side, and do not really fit in with the style of this board so I would not be posting them... I don't find that SU stamps lend well to that look anyhow...

As for the staple look, it is in style... and alot of things are in style now... give it a year and everyone will be on here trying to sell all the colored staples that they bought up.

I can't tell you how thrilled I was when SU did away with 99% of the country stitched look stamp sets!!! I loathe those. Second to that are cutsey animals doing cutsey un-animalistic things. I earned the Hedgehog Happiness back when it was a host set thinking it was just so darned cute and I probably used it 10 times in, what, 5 years? Just not me.

I do like vintage, shabby chic and staples. But they have to be done and look like they belong on the card, not just staples for staples sake. And Michelle, the other Michelle, I worked in rare books for 4 years at our uni and agree with you about staples in scrapbooks!

Don't care for staples or collage. It's just not my thing. Actually I don't have a thing. My stamps tend to be line stamps that I watercolor. I love the look of the bold stamps like simply circles, but my brain always says "what are you going to do with that?" The vintage look isn't me either.

Oh, {{{{{{{{{{Chef Mama}}}}}}}}}}!!!

You are so nice to me! That was one of the RARE successful attempts of mine with wire. Wire and I have a love/hate relationship. I love what EVERYBODY ELSE does with it, and hate what I do with it as it never turns out like I envision and usually ends up a gnarled mess I have to trash, as there's no hope for straightening it and trying again.

All I had to do on that one was wrap it around my wooden spoon handle, thank goodness--that's about all I'm good for with wire--wrapping it 'round something. After that, it's all OVAH.

Staples? Staples?!?
I just buy tools and eyelets and now someone wants me to buy their colored staples?!?
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH HHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I would have to say card styles are so individual.
I just try to not do too much on them. I have a tendency to think, oh I'll add something here, and I should have left it alone. So, kind of simple, whether fresh, classic, nature, whatever.

I don't like bulky things, especially in scrapbooks. I also do not like staples, but I'm am addicted to bargains and things that come in multiple colors, so I recently purchased colored staples at the 1$ spot. At the moment of purchase I convinced myself I'd find a great way to use them, by the time I got home I was already ?ing my decision. I guess I need to stick with my gut feelings. I also do not like vintage and or collage. I just don't get the point of altered books and ephemera (sp?). I'm not a fan of country. Cutesy is only appropriate for kids cards. Boy I'm really picky! Although I'm glad to hear that some of you dislike the same things, I thought I was the only one! Dina

Bottle Caps have always made me wonder why someone would put something in a scrapbook that could slice their foot when stepped on, lol!!
I can't believe that people are still plopping down stickers in random fashion and I'm definitely not into the collage style.
Another pet peeve that I have (and I have seen it in a lot of the scrappin mags) is people sanding the edges of their photographs. Are they nuts?

Does that you mean stickers in general are dorky, or just poorly-considered placement (aka sticker sneeze) aren't your style?

(I *llooooovvvvee* stickers! Mrs. Grossman is my idol!!)

I hate vintage/distressed and cutesy the most.

That's kinda what I was thinking but didn't know for sure. Thanks.

What I don't like for sure: SEWING (can't keep a button on anything! So there's no way I'm letting it frustrate my hobby!), FIBERS, SPINNER cards, and WIRE.

But, I'm so glad that we are all different in our tastes. Our world would be so boring if we were the same
Amen to that....I'm so glad we all have different tastes too. What fun would our hobby be if our creations all looked the same?
