I find myself addicted to these types of projects lately. I've downloaded the templates offered here and have made the purses, shoes, boxes, etc. They often are quick to make and fun to embellish and the recipients appreciate them because they are unique.

I bet once you play with that Cricut cartridge you'll have lots of fun making these projects.

Hi -

Here's the recipe - it's quick and easy and delicious.

Spiced Pecans:

1 egg white
1 tbs water
3 cups pecan halves
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp ground cloves
dash of salt
butter

Mix the egg white and water in a large bowl. Add pecans and stir until pecans are well coated. In a small bowl, mix the sugar and spices and salt. Add this to the pecans and stir until pecans are coated.

Generously butter a cookie sheet with lots of butter. Spread the pecans on the cookie sheet and bake in a 300 degree (F) oven for 30-40 minutes, stirring once or twice during the baking.

That's it. Enjoy!

My family is going toward food. Some of us put together bags of ingredients to make soup, a scone breakfast, late night muchies, etc. The younger ones find something gormet -- always on sale to share. I got some really great bargains (75% off) at a gift shop going out of business. I bought really nice bath and beauty products. But since it isn't Christmas without making something, I am going to fix munchies for the men and mustard, jelly and spice mixes for the gals. Every year dh buys a tool or gadget for the guys.

I make a decorated (if I have time) gift bag and fill it with things I've collected all year. Sort of an adult stocking. My family stays so busy that our wrappings have degenerated from the lovely beribboned wrapped boxes to brown bags with handles from the grocery store. Frankly those heavy brown bags are like gold. The store went out of business and we recyle the bags yearly. We also reuse gift bags -- Just put a large label over the previous ones. There is a Christmas goose one that has been circulating for 15 years!!

Thanks for posting this! My parents love pecans (it's their version of crack ) so I'm always looking for different ways to use pecans.

We're doing a cookie/candy theme Christmas. SS and I spent all night making salt dough "cookies" for ornaments. Lets hope the dogs stay away from them!

I have this problem also. What we do is a basket or box of food. One year it was a New Year's Eve theme, with different types of munchies they don't normally buy. Stuff like nice cheeses, fancy crackers, gourmet chocolates, and champagne. Another time I put together some soup in a jar type things, along with a ham and nice wine. I had fun putting together these baskets, and they like to eat it. You can get some good ideas browsing the catalogs and online for these things.

Iíve decided that I want to make some gifts this year- eeek! I'm excited and terrified at the same time! I just started reading this thread and will be coming back to go through all of it for ideas!

Question on giving food gifts: how long do things last? I will need to have my gifts all done about a week in advance (traveling to see family). Will things keep that long? I like the idea of making the following food items:
spiced pecans
chocolate covered pretzel rods
pretzel circles
cookies (ok, broad I know, but I was specifically thinking of Mexican wedding cookies or another nut-based cookie).

I know when I make gingerbread cookies they sadly lost a lot of their punch after a day or two.

In the past Iíve made gingerbread cookies and sugar cookies, but never really gave them as a gift, just brought them along to family visits for fun. Iím tired of buying gifts that Iím not sure anyone even wants- homemade craft/food items seem like the way to go for parents!

Usually I make these things up before going visiting, as our family is nearby. The soup mixes and items you've listed aren't a problem. I don't think perishable items would be a good choice if you've got to pack stuff ahead of time and don't have access to refrigeration. Or maybe, purchase perishables when you get to your destination.

Smile SCS Holiday Gift Ideas .doc - not complete, YET!

Since there are two threads going on about this topic, I've been working on creating a readable, working Word doc that allows someone (like ME) to just look on the left side of the document and click on the heading for the recipe or idea given. FOR me, it's made it so much easier to find things. I've included many, but NOT ALL, of the ideas on this thread as well as from the other. HOPE that was OK! I in no way meant to slight ANYONE here by not including a recipe nor an idea!! I PROMISE! I will try to go back and add in all the missing ones as the week goes on. (Hey, I'm recovering from back surgery - it's keepin' me busy!). Please let me know if you wish to have your name included, or not, as I didn't think about names until I was more than half way through creating this. I figured this was really for my use, and anyone here on SCS, so hopefully the names that are shown makes that OK?? I want to give credit where credit is due, so HECK, PM me with your recipe/idea title, and your name (SCS name or real name), and I'll immediately add it in next to the recipe shown. Hope this is helpful to some of you. I know it's been a GREAT tool/idea list for myself. BTW, I wasn't too sure at first, but BOY Denise's Lotion is GREAT. I used Cucumber baby lotion, and it smells amazing! MAN, are my hands SOFT!!!! Ooops, am I showing too much enthusiasm about this?

I'm in dead-brain idea mode this year for some reason. OH, I know the reason - my oldest DD just just moved to NY yesterday for a new job. Another Christmas without the kids! Well, there seem to be many folks around that could use some Holiday Cheer, so I'll put my energy towards making gifts for those folks! HAPPY SUNDAY TO ALL! ~ Barbara

  • Baking and making candy (cookies, quick breads, fudge, marshmallows, peanut brittle, toffee, etc.)
  • Melt and pour soaps
  • A limited number of cards.

I won't make all of my cards, but will do a few. The rest will be store bought.

Default Mini Stamp Kit

Here's a little stamp kit I made for a friend using the acetate pillow boxes. I was surprised how much stuff I could fit in them! I still need to decorate the outside of it though.

Well, I bought about three different stamps a couple of weeks ago and have stacks of Christmas-themed or colored paper, so like it or not, I've got to make my cards. I've been making cards for years, and I make paper crafting stuff for my craft fairs, and to give as favors at my book club or to people who need a little lift, etc. It's 'my thing" to do and I think my close friends and family actually expect it and would be surprised if I sent store bought cards (much as I would like to sometimes, but don't tell anybody.)

Question Question to all on this thread about a new idea- a recipe book?

Tracy - your stamp kit is just too cute! I would never have thought that you could fit so many items into those pillow boxes! Is that the SU/Sizzix one? You've given me a nice idea to add to my list of gifts. I know a few folks who would love a collection of goodies to add to their stamping collection!

Linda K - My document includes items from the other thread here on SCS re: items for Christmas, so please don't be overwhelmed. You more than likely didn't "miss" anything on this thread, as again there were many included from the OTHER thread!

On another note - I posted to the other thread and got a YES to my latest idea. Here it is...and ALL feedback is welcomed. There are SO many cookie recipes that have been given on the threads, that I thought it might be nice to compile a document (like mine above) with just those baking/cookie recipes alone. NOW, if folks here are interested, PLEASE give me all the feedback you can. I'd like to make it perhaps a special HOLIDAY SCS Baking one. Maybe if you wish, then you would be able to print it out and create a book, or just keep on your computer? I've love to include names to give credit to those who posted a recipe(s), (only with permission), and do up some sort of category type format for easy reference, including an index. It shouldn't be too hard, but I want to see what you folks here have to say about the idea. Might take me a bit, but I should be able to whip it out before the end of November...

That said, what size font/color, etc. would be best for everyone? Format? Categories? I want to TRY for a nice consistent style, that appeals to everyone. This way, those who don't want to fuss with making any changes to the document won't have to. Ideas???

I know I've forgotten a few comments, but I'll get there. Need to go back and read over the latest posts again!!

~smiles to all~

Tracy - WHERE did you find those adorable tins?? I really love how you decorated it! YEAH, some more ideas...I'm having way TOO much fun. Guess bed rest (per say) isn't such a bad thing after all!

BTW - I went to TWO different DOLLAR stores, one the Dollar Tree, and I can't remember the name of the other. You folks are LUCKY wherever you are, because the two I hit were SO limited with FEW items, messy, and NOTHING like the selections I've been reading about here. Literally, the baby section for BABY LOTION - NOTHING. In the other section for creams & lotions selection - NOTHING! Zippo on containers as well. Geez, I feel so left out! IF anyone knows, might you have any suggestions as to where else I can go for the "deals"? Walmart seems to be about it..that and Target. SO SAD, I was hoping for more LOTION ingredients at better prices! Warning, the LOTION is a POTION, and it has me hooked! Who would have thunk?!

Do you have Family Dollar stores or Dollar General stores? That is where I get all of my stuff for lotion-including the vitamin e cream. The quailty is great and the prices even greater!!!!

We have something called Dollar Tree (stores, Inc.), and then the other one was Dollar something...different sort of name, but it was because they also had items for $1.25... I looked in our phone books/online, even for cities within 20 miles, and didn't come up with anything but those two. I asked around, and was only directed to those, but there HAVE to be others. I live in the SF Bay Area. I admit, I don't really want to drive 45 min. to get the dollar discount, per say, however if it's a great store with a nice selection, I'd make a run every now and then. ESPECIALLY now for the holidays. I'll keep lookin'. The two I hit were seriously sad. I've been in a few in Los Angeles (area) and they were AMAZING places. These were THUMBS DOWN..

Thanks for the names, as I'm going to search to see if we have either of those around here! So, since I'm on the hunt, are the two you mentioned called FAMILY DOLLAR & DOLLAR GENERAL exactly by name? HOPING to find a good dollar store!!!!! ~ Barbara

Thanks Barabara My friend Cathy sent me a few things from her store to play with. Here's a link if anyone wants to check out the stuff she carries -

Paper Garden Projects

I've also got the cone favor and a couple of the bags she carries, so I'm gonna see what I can come up with for those.

I think these pillow boxes are bigger than the SU! ones because I was really surprised at how much fit in them. Does anyone know the dimensions for the Sizzix die cut?

These pillow boxes from your link you sent are definitely larger than the SU/Sizzix ones. But shoot, for $.59 a pop, it would be nice to have some larger ones on hand. I'm definitely going back to check around her site. Some fun goodies there, for sure! Right now, for whatever reason, I keep getting a message that there is a server issue with her site. SHOOT, just as I was thinking "place the order NOW Barbara, so you'll simply have the items HERE and ready to go"....Oh, well, I'm sure it will be working later (when I cannot sleep again), or in the morning!

I better get all the SCS great info/ideas I can looked at tonight. Tomorrow, even stuck in bed, it is BACK to writing reports for cases, etc.,..ah, CRUD, real work. I'll sneak in SCS I'm certain between tasks, just so I don't get too sad. LORD HELP ME however if I turn in a report with a cut and paste idea for a Holiday Gift from here! IT could happen!! Note to self: READ and RE-READ everything prior to sending out!

Thank you again for the info. I sure love the tag you created for that tin. TOO cute for words! (Yipes, my DD's cats keep trying to help me type. They're intrigued by my moving fingers...sheesh!) ~ Barbara

I love the idea of a recipe file. I was thinking about all of the ideas here and remembered a simple treat I made years ago with the kids. They are chocolate mice. No baking, just melting some chocolate. I saw this on a kid's tv program.

Chocolate Mice

You make as many as you want. Ingredients are Hershey Kisses, slivered almonds, marchino cherries with the long stems, and melted chocolate (the candy melts are best).

Line a cookie sheet with wax paper.

Place your cherries (these are the bodies with the tail) on a paper towel to dry them a bit so the chocolate won't get full of liquid when you are dipping.

Melt the chocolate and keep it warm.

Unwrap the Hershey Kisses (the heads).

Holding the cherry by the stem, dip the cherry in the melted chocolate, covering the fruit completely. Working on the wax paper, place the chocolate-covered cherry against the flat side of the kiss, holding it a bit till they sort of get glued together. Before the chocolate hardens again, slip two slivered almonds between the kiss and the cherry for ears.

Once they are dried (only takes a few minutes), you can move them from the wax paper onto a plate. You can use the tubes of pink or red frosting to draw eyes and the tip of the nose (the pointy side of the kiss).

Fun and whimsical -

Very cute idea! You could make some of these and give someone the book "Twas the Night Before Christmas" or some other mousy book!!!

Since I'm working on the SCS HOLIDAY RECIPES book.. Do I have your permission to include this one? Also, do you want your name included, and may I include your anecdote about these as well? Seems folks like to read the "hints" and ideas beyond just how to make things. It makes it more personal, and the extras appear to give a warm touch to the recipes. Please let me know! TFS!! ~ Barbara

Question Vegaswife - OH a questions for YOU too!

Your naming that book was such a cute gift add-on but here's my question. (Since no one has suggested any names) so may I use your idea shown here?

Quote: <>

Perhaps we could have a "SCS Twas the Night Before Christmas Holiday Baking" recipe book? I'm looking for something cute/sweet/creative for a title....

Anyone else have a title suggestion? How to categorize all of the recipes? (as I want to create this based on how ALL OF US would like to refer to a recipe book). I figured under the index, a list by name - alphabetized (basic form), then also, another list by catgeory; rolled cookies, 5 ingredients or less or EASY PEEZY recipes (sp?), recipes w/nuts (since some cannot eat them, or simply think UGH when nuts are listed)....I'm trying to come up with creative ways to list these, so it's an easy reference for all.

Permission for snagging that title (not the giving the book with the goody, but it would make a cute title adding SCS Holiday Baking, no?). NOT sure if anyone wants a CUTE title. Suggestions??
