Default What do you do with the brown packing paper from SU!

Ok, being a recycler, and an art teacher, I have tried to think of good uses (beyond putting it in the paper recycling) for the brown paper that SU uses to pack their boxes with. I will currently be using it for my 3rd grade students to paper mache with, but am interested in finding out any other fabulous ideas out there!!

I usually wrap boxes up with them. But, I do use them for my workshop folders:
http://gallery.splitcoaststampers.co...cat=500&page=2

Those folders had writing on them and I needed to cover them up, so that's one way I use the paper.

I also use them on cards:
http://gallery.splitcoaststampers.co...cat=500&page=3

I wanna see what everyone else uses them for!

I have heard people say they smooth it out and use it for scrap paper under their projects. Or they stamp on it and use it for layering. You could use it in the winter instead of newspaper to start the woodstove. I let my DD and her friend play with it. They like to wrap it around their shoulders and pretend it is a shawl. Use it to wrap breakables when you are moving. I cant think of anything else right now

I used the jumbo wheels on it for wrapping paper during the holidays and for birthdays. I also saved several long pieces and twisted them lengthwise to make vines for my son's jungle birthday party. We stapled the vines to the beams in the ceiling of our basement playroom. The boys LOVED it and the jungle stayed up for over a month. The vines were sturdy enough to hold rubber snakes and some birds, etc... I've also used little pieces of it torn up to decorate a lamp base much like the masking tape stuff we all did in school.

I always save it because I never know when a good idea will strike.

Have fun!

Love all the great ideas! Will have to try them. As for me, they inevitably become the cat toy of the moment - until I get tired of him whipping it around the house and leaving bits everywhere - then it becomes garbage...

Oh that was my idea, I have an area in the house that is the kitty zone, and they kitties love to play in the paper. When they get it all flat and holes in it they get a new stash of noisy paper to play in. They love it. Along with a box hidden under the paper is the best free cat toy ever!

you gals are something else! I have just been putting it out for recycle! now, I will not do this. I see that I can do all sorts of things with it. You've got my creative juices flowing. I don't know if I should thank you or not. Now, where am I going to store all that paper?

Into the trash, until now! What great ideas ladies! TFS!

I especially love the shredder idea ameliaharris99!

Now, of course, I'm also wondering about how to store it as well--especially since I have a big order on the way, yay!!!

Please share some storage ideas.

My dog (who is kind of like a cat) loves to tear apart paper - she usually ends up with it. Now I'll have to make sure to put it up - love the use as a background!

Well,,,, now I am looking at that packing paper with a new eye for using. I have been discarding it and thinking I was so much happier that it wasnt those packing peanuts. I hated those, they stuck to everything and were so messy.

Thanks for the tips and all,,,,, you gals are great.....

I tear them at the perforation and have my 5 year old DS make our placemats for dinner. It keeps him busy while I prepare dinner.

I give it to my 2 year old to color and stamp on. That way i am not wasting paper with 2 or 3 crayon marks after she has had enough(very short attention span). I also use it for scrap paper when I am stamping.

My kids love sidewalk chalk, but can't use it on the sidewalk in the winter. So I put down a big sheet of brown paper across the kitchen floor and bring their sidewalk chalk in from the garage. They love it. When I don't have the sheets I open up a brown paper bag or two. Works great!

When did they use the peanuts?!?! I remember the air-filled bags, but never received a shipment with peanuts. Ugh! That would have to be a nightmare sorting through--I can't stand the peanuts, not to mention they are not environmentally friendly.

Default packing paper

I've saved some from the last few shipments. I smoothed it out and folded it up. I'm doing a THO this Wednesday night and going to use it for the ladies as scratch paper underneath our projects while stamping.

That is what I do with mine for storage as well. I've just been thinking inside the box on this one. I re-use it for shipping if I've swapped or e-Bayed an item. I also used it as cushioning in Christmas gifts that were breakable.

I love all the ideas everyone has for this. TFS!

I recently gave all of mine (had a large 4 box order) to a church near by. The Sunday School classes are always needing stuff like that.

I don't save all of mine, but I did use some of it to cover my countertops the other night when my stamp club did the shaving vream technique! It was perfect - just what I needed!

Joy - I love the idea of using it on cards and folders!

I put it on my tabel and stamp on it or paint on it and then I just toss it. It is always long enough to cover my whole tabel instead of just working on a small piece.

I LOVE all of these great ideas. I've always just thrown it away, used it for packing, or as fire starter. Now, I've got TONS of ideas flowing through my brain! I love the workshop folder idea from Joy. Great job there. And using it to layer. WOW! I knew SCS ladies were extra specially creative, but this takes the cake. Great job!

Omigosh you are not going to believe this. I'm home sick surfing SCS on the couch with the laptop and watching HGTV. On Decorating Cents they just wallpapered a room with brown packing paper!!! They tore it into large random shapes, crumpled it and then applied it with wallpaper paste! It actually looked really good when they finished!

g-r-o-a-n something else I MUST save I have been struggling, like some others here, with what to do with it instead of just tossing it (after the cats get done with it). I just hate throwing anything away - I just know there's a better use for it!!
I did find out today that my next door neighbor canes chairs and needs 'filler' paper for some of the chairs he does - whooohooo - a home for some of it. And I love the other ideas that have been offered. Thanks all! Now I just have to figure out where to keep it all until I need it

Gees, all my orders have been going through my SIL so she receives them at her house. I bet she throws it out. I’ll have to email her about this.
I’ve used the brown wrapping paper which I’m sure is the same stuff for backgrounds on cards.
It’s great for using under the brayer, it doesn’t stick to the brayer like junk catalog pages.
And I also make envelopes out of it. Use a glue stick to close it or just put the stick and lick on it. (Store the Stick and Lick bottle upside down so the dauber doesn’t dry out)

These are all great ideas!

However, I can not use any of them. My dog know that if the UPS man (who she hates) comes to our house it can only be for one reason......to bring her a box full of brown paper! I don't know what I will do if SU changes the packaging again.

Whatever happens, I hope they never go back to the packing peanuts! I was teaching preschool back when they used those. I used to take them in for the kids to "melt" (they were the cornstarch kind that dissolve). The kids thought they were great fun, I thought they were a great pain in the neck!

My son's preschool is having a safari themed fun day and we are using the paper to make vines by twisting it very tightly and attaching leaves.

I've been saving it because my DH said why don't you use it for the table under your stamping projects during workshops buttttttttt the other day when I was smoothing it and folding it on the perf. I noticed it would be a good size for all those paper bag books some of you guys make. I don't make them but I thought it looked good. Also my kids stamp on it and I think it could make some wonderful background paper, crumple up, paint the high spots for sand or mountains. You could crumple and use it as a texture stamp for other background papers. And if you were really industrious you could use it to make homemade papers with flower petals etc. Ok, let me stop or I'll just start ordering more stuff so I can save more paper to never get around to using.

I use it to cover my 6 ft. tables when I have classes here at the house. If my customers were not messy then I refold it and use it again, or turn it over and use the other side at the next class. My customers love it because they feel more free to work and not restricted to a sheet of paper.

I love the idea of using it on our cards - Thanks for the other ideas!
