I enjoy seeing what everyone is posting that they have altered-anything but a card. That got me thinking at the grocer what else can I buy and make my family eat so I can have the empty container! lol.
For the tin cans I like the diced tomato cans, the top does not have any printed writing and they are a nice size. Mostly though it is something we already buy regularly.

What are you buying?
I like glass jars. Mostly from Costco because they are large in size but recently my DH found a strawberry jam at the grocery store that he loves and it comes in the cutest little jar! So excited about that! How knew I'd be excited about a simple thing like an empty jam jar! LOL! :-D
About your diced tomato cans..don't they have the lids that you have to remove with a can opener? What are you using them for?

I have a stash of saved Altoid tins, candles, wood boxes, $1 photo holders.... probably a bunch more stuff. I buy them because I'm going to make something really clever "someday."
primas for the bottle
starbucks coffee for the bottle
pringles for the can
cashews for the can
7up to use the bottle for mailing
altoids for the tin
any small boxes, little tins
I also cut the back pockets out of my dds pants when she out grows them and keep them for scrapbooks and quilts

My husband loves Brianna's Homestyle salad dressing. It's pricey, but I buy it for him because he loves it. (... and I love the adorable unprinted bottle it comes in). hehehhe

planners from the dollar spot (just got these, they have an opaque clear cover)
clear note pad cubes from the dollar store
bottles, jars, tins,
pens... I got some from a drug rep that are just like RSVs that I plan to alter,
coasters from Chilis
little pop top cans from diced peaches
International Coffee tins
dominoes
pocket calendars from Kmart, no kitties or puppies on the inside
dollar store/Walmart glass mugs to etch
You name it... I"ll alter it! I have a HUGE box of stash... that I should be getting out as we speak, and starting on the office staff's gifts!
Ladies, I am really bad! Besides me 'eyeing' (sp?) the shelves in stores, I have my sister and nieces giving me containers. I now have several handled plastic jug from doggie treats now containing Prima flowers separated by color; small, tall plastic containers from cookie sprinkles (I am thinking, just got them) and the plastic containers that held individual packets for a Kool Aid-type of drink. My sister and nieces also brought back from Hawaii some washi paper that someone had used as gift wrap. (My poor relations have become scroungers for my 'addiction'!!!)
I also saved and am using for flowers the plastic jars that held various nuts from Target. Yes, I too have Altoid tins (small items), plastic microwave item bowls (sort different parts of cards during production or use for trash at a workshop),lids off flavored coffee so use to hold small items-brads, bling, etc.-at workshops, small plastic fruit cups (will make a top and fill with treats), those small condiment containers with lids to hold small items in transit, etc. I will be the 'little 'ole lady' that will be found buried under "stuff"!
I have started saving decorated empty kleenex boxes to use as trash cans for my stamping parties. All my friends love the idea and it's convient for each table to have their own mini trash can. I especially love the holiday and theme ones!
the tin cans, I think they are Hunts brand petite diced tomatos, they have a pop top. so I just use this when I make spagetti sauce
what do you use these for?

Leave the pop top intact, but open the can to empty the contents from the bottom end, with a safety can opener (leaves no sharp edges).
After thoroughly cleaning the cans and bottoms, you can decorate them, insert a gift that will fit inside, and use any clear drying adhesive, such as Diamond Glaze or Ranger Glossy Effects, etc. to glue/seal the bottom back onto the can. Set something heavy on top of it to keep it tight while it dries.
The recipient can then pop the top, to see the surprise inside.
You can see many examples of pop top gift containers in the gallery at this search result:

Little composition books
RSVP pens
Acrylic photo frames (the ones that are less than $1)
Ikea wooden frames (the 3 pack for $2)
Ikea journals (when I can find them)
Coasters from Chili's (speaking of... have you seen the hexagonal ones they just got????)
I have saved and spray painted Altoids tins like crazy....until I realized that it's easier and probably cheaper to buy the plain silver ones. I was spending way too much time and spray paint trying to paint them white! lol!
But I have altered many of the above mentioned items and sadly, I have an entire closet full of things "waiting" to be transformed! I finally had to stop saving the pop top cans, they were taking over the kitchen and my craft room. And the Target Dollar bin is a favorite stopping place...cute tins and those little mini lunchboxes and metal mailboxes are also lots of fun.
However I must confess that I am a terrible hoarder. I buy them and then hate to use them up because then I wouldn't have them to hoard later! Yes, crazy...but I bet a lot of you guys understand. Jan

I have NO idea what you are talking about!
I've actually been <gasp> using stuff lately. Have to--I'm out of room!

 Me too!!! And I get coasters from restaurants too.
I just commented yesterday that I needed ties for my cocoa cones and I was looking for a decade's worth of saved garbage bag twist ties in my "hoarded-up-stash"...
they say "GLAD" and I was just going to add, TIDINGS... get it?
no avail...sigh...
(my 5y-o ds loves pipecleaners, tist ties, clips... beads... has raided my stashes like a crafty mouse!)
so I almost bundled up to go out in -38 degree CELCIUS weather to go buy garbage bags...
from GLAD!
so yes! I buy everything based on the cool free bonus container it comes in...
or the stuff that comes with it...

YES! Another reason to sample all the flavors even though I know what I am already going to order. teehee!
Those cardboard carriers w/handles for drinks at fast food places! They are easy to alter, just take the drinks out asap so they don't get wet. Stamp 'em up or cover them, then add fun things like candles, bags of sweets, a fave bottled drink, or small vases of flowers. You name it, as long as it is the size of a drink or smaller, it will fit in there!

I have saved those International Coffee tins and the big ones from BJ's and just didn't know what to do with them. I drink that coffee daily so I have alot of them. My family would be very happy with any ideas you can give me so they don't have to see that bag of them sitting around anymore.
Oh, I go for just about anything. I recently purchased some beautiful glass jars that had fitted glass lids, I think they were once used in the pharmacy industry, altered them to hold ribbon.
Bought a bunch of lunch boxes for .37 cents each a while back. I just love to alter stuff.
Working on a bed side tray now, bought the tray for $1.19 in clearance at Michaels (it was a bit beat up but salvagable) I'll post what I did with it to my blog tomorrow.

7up bottle for mailing? That's new to me........any info?
Thanks!
Having a new baby in the house I have been saving the empty powder formula cans, the Parents Choice brand is the only one that is still metal though, the other brands have changed over to cardboard, and we just switched to Enfamil, so it is a good thing I have been saving since August. I am going to decorate them and fill with little hand creams, lip balms, and shower gel/body lotion/pouf sets for my SIL's for Christmas gifts. Also save the frozen juice concentrate containers, the plastic ones like Old Orchard brand, I dont keep the lids, just decorate and they make cute little pen/pencil holders for your desk. They are also great to let the kids decorate to give to the various teachers at school for gifts without it costing alot of $.
All the ideas everyone else listed are really good too! Thanks for more ideas!!

Thanks!
you glue the lid back on
remove the label and cut a flap to insert goodies of any kind
place a mail label or gift tag over where you cut your hole and secure the label with packing tape if mailing
I mail in them and give gifts in them at christmas, using red tissue or shredded paper inside the green bottle
if you search naked swap Jessica is hosting another swap where you send items to a ss in a bottle... its fun

I'm a big Crystal Light drinker so I'm intrigued. Can you please tell me what you do with them?

What are you buying?
I found a neat test tube spice rack at Target for only $14. I bought it with the express purpose of emptying out the spices and using the tubes and the rack to organize and display buttons, brads, etc! We already have a spice rack and I'm sure the spices could use a little freshening up, so I won't waste anything--just not using it for its original purpose.

The round cardboard boxes that Brie cheese come in.
The matchbook style box that petite cakes come in - it fits four cards with envelopes perfectly and makes a great little gift.
