you can use either for watercoloring...but the pencils need more finessing (sp) to get really good blending from them...I use the crayons most of the time...just a water brush on the back end and then paint onto my paper...
the colors of the crayons are matched to the ink colors...
The crayons are SO much better than pencils! They come in the SU colors so they match the cardstock. I also like the look of watercoloring with the crayons better than the pencils.
The crayons do match the inks and cardstock. However, because they are a water based medium, they will not produce an indentical effect. This is particularly pronounced in the bolder colors. Coloring directly on the paper and then adding small amounts of water will produce a bolder color.
The pencils are nice too, but the color selection is limited. In terms of watercolor effects, I actually prefer the pencils -- but use the crayons because of the color choices. finally, the best way to get an intense match is to use dye reinkers! HTH

Along these same lines. Do you guys feel that the neutral wcc are a necessary? I keep thinking I should get them, then I question myself. What do you guys think?
Crayons! Crayons! Crayons! I don't know how anyone could live with out the crayons. I love the neutrals too. They are great for skintones. I was a little disappointed in the packaging that came with the neutrals, but not the crayons themselves. They are a must have in my opinion.
I also think the crayons have more uses than the pencils - you can use the watercolor crayons to color directly onto a bold stamp (then mist and stamp) for a cool effect, and there are some other tutorials under resources.
Used someone else's pencils once - eh. If I got them as a gift, I might use them sometimes, but I don't need them.
Crayons on the other hand...
To preserve my crayons (especially when customers are involved) I color on the lid of a stamp ox and then "pick up" the color with a blender pen or Aqua Painter and color away! Any crayon left on the lid can be wiped away with paper towel and my crayons aren't gunked up by water or blender pen fluid.

Yes, you must have them. One thing I really like to do when I'm making a sky is do the blue coloring, whatever color(s) that may be. Then, when the paper is still a bit damp, I rub the white over it. It gives a cool effect, I think. And, if you want to blend it a little more, you can. The grays are good for shadows and the white for highlights. The white looks pretty cool on Kraft paper. Sometimes, if I want just a titch of color on white paper, I'll put a little vanilla. I really felt a need for them before them came out. Try them, you'll like them. ;)
I got my set of crayons before they changed to color families & I love them! I just use them with an aquapainter for watercoloring & direct to stamped image for coloring (though I like the watercolor effect much better).
