Question Wanted: Ribbon Holder Suggestions

I'm finally getting a new craft room with more space and I was wondering what do people do with ribbon. I would like to hang a white shelf on the wall and display them, but I do not want them on a dial rod (too hard to get them down to use). Any suggestions? Where do you get one? Picture of yours would be helpful, but not necessary.

Please help.

I just ordered one of these:

http://organizemore.com/programs/sho...s&showitem=301

I don't have it yet, but I've heard great things about them. Mine should be here Thursday!! I also ordered an ink pad holder and a Sizzix Bigz holder!! It looks like they are remodeling there website so it's a bit wonky (for me at least).

I actually use three different "systems". I know you said you didn't want anything on a dial rod (not exactly sure what that is, but it may be what I have) but for my rolls I made this to hang on the wall in the walk-in closet in my craftroom. I don't take them off, I just cut from the spools. For "by the yard" I wrap them on vintage type clothes pins and store in IKEA jars. For smaller pieces I use "The Ribbon Ring"...which actually works well with any size cut ribbon. Attached a few pics for you to get an idea. HTH!

I keep all my spools in bins and just put about a yard of each on these cutain wire with clips from Ikea. Each clip has about 2-4 similar ribbons on it. I love that I can just hold my project up to the wall of ribbon and try pieces without any digging, re-winding or opening and closing anything. And it's easy to take a clip off and refill a specific strand.

Have you seen this?
http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...bbonorganizer/

It's fabulous, but if you have a lot of ribbon, you might need *more*. . . .I keep my favorites in the Ribbon Organizer. I also have ribbon in jars
,
on wire shelves in my closet,

in boxes and on shelves.

I have a little bit of a ribbon problem.

Great idea, Cher! For those of you who store your ribbon out in the open.... do you find that it gets dusty? I always think that would be a problem. What is your experience?

This is what I have. I got it at Joanns for uner $5. I'm thinking I could paint mine to match some of my other stuff, but black doesn't bother me. I found it under the storage section sorted by brand. It is a Marie Osmond design. I like how it seems to hold different size spools nicely and that it stacks. It also has a clip that you can use if you don't have a full rack to hold what you do have upright. Plus no dowl. So I can just grab the whole spool or I can cut directly from the spool while it sits on the shelf.

Although, if you are going to make the shelf yourself, you could make it as thin as you want and add a lip around it to hold the ribbon on. If you madeit to hold bigger spools of ribbon you could add a small peice on wood behind smaller spools to make them snug up against the outer lip so they don't rool around and you can see them more easily. I hope the made sense.

Ohhh.....I really like this idea, Cher. Where in Ikea did you find that clips and is that a Bygel rod that you have them hanging on?

Most of my ribbon is not on spools or not on spools of a size that fits in most holders. I'm thinking of taking each loose ribbon and clipping a piece of it on a rod. Then put each ribbon in it's own ziploc bag and sort by color in bins. That way I can match up ribbons using the samples on the clips and then just head to the correct bin to get what I need from the baggie.

I know it sounds complicated but very little of my ribbon gets used because I can't access it easily. Hopefully this will work. If I can find the clips and the rod. LOL~ Ikea is a BIG place and those are pretty small to try and find.

Here's mine -- Organize More! baby!! www.organizemore.com

Mike is great and the product is fabulous -- two little nails in the wall, with those great lotsa-teeth hangers on the back, and good to go. Click on my gallery and my stamp space album is at the top!!

I hung a mini one the other day and I'll take a photo shortly for you

I also put some striped and misc. ribbon on clothespins and into some big ol' apothecary jars.

The system I use is a curtain wire...I think it was called Dignitet, and it was in the curtain rod section at Ikea, I think I have three packs of clips on that one, but we have since moved, and my ribbons have expanded, so when I put it back up in my new room, I will just use a longer wire and more clips. You can cut the wire to length which is great for fitting in someplace.

And nope, I really don't have a problem with dust...mainly because it's under shelves, plus it is so little surface area on top to collect dust.

My husband had one of those metal multiple pants hangers and I used that to hang some ribbon spools in my closet. Here's a pic of one: http://www.amazon.com/SWING-ARM-SLAC...8198518&sr=1-4. I also have the ribbon wound around floss cards and stored in plastic bins. I like this b/c it doesn't take up a lot of space and I can group the ribbon by colors. The downside is the creasing from the edge of the floss card.

I just bought a Ribbon Hanger for the wall from here

http://shop.clipitup.com/product.sc?...=1&productId=8

I just love it. It holds ribbon and I put my little bits and pieces in sandwich bags and hang them up. I also hang up other things along with my ribbon too. It is on sale right now, and in my opinion worth every penny. Oh, and I think that when I bought it, they had free shipping.

Happy searching...

I use rain gutter. I bought one 10' length at Lowe's. I had room for 4' sections, so I cut two 4' pieces and purchased 4 end caps (one for each end of each piece). There's a shelf above where the gutter lengths are hung, so I don't have a problem with my ribbon getting dusty. Altogether, it cost me around $10-$15 and I can store dozens of spools of ribbon. I put my shorter pieces and scraps in clear Ikea jars.

I've been watching all these threads for a while and still have not decided on a organizer.
I would love to see more pics and what you have tried and liked and what you have tried and NOT liked, with the why it didn't work for you.

I'm sure each of you have reasons for why you have what you have can you share that with us all?

This looks like a great shelf idea. The size seems small and I would probably need at least 3 of them. The photo makes the shelf look real big but the measurements aren't so big. I'll have to think about it. Can't anyone find one thats at least twice the size?

I don't mean to step on any toes, so this is purely MY opinion from what I have actually tried myself...

I first tried a tacklebox-type case with compartments to organize each color separately...such a pain to get each one out and open it to determine what I needed.

Next I went to the jars...this was easier to see what I was looking for as each jar was out in the open, but it was a pain to try to dig out each ribbon, and I gave up on the clothespins in jars thing because not only would I have to dump the jar of ribbon to get the one out of the bottom, but I would hate rolling them back up when I decided it was the wrong one.

Third I tried a ribbon rack...dowels through the spools so they would spin...yet another problem was removing the pin holding the ends, unrolling the ribbon to try it on a project and re-rolling it when I changed my mind.

So...finally I am on the clips of just a yard or so of each ribbon, with my whole spools in a bin hiding out. The only problems with this method are: 1) the rare occasion that I decide on one ribbon for a bunch of projects in which case I dig out the roll... 2) digging out the roll to refill the clip...and 3) it does require the most wall space...although jars and spools take up space too, just different dimensions.

But...overall it has the least amount of effort involved in daily creating.

Stickups - The pant pull out thing is cool too. tfs

Laura - I sure hope I didn't step on any toes asking my clarifying question in your thread. My sincere apologies if I did.

I use the plastic ribbon holders from Michaels- I stack them 2 high on shelves, and each one holds a color family- it is easy to take an entire holder to the table and trial ribbons.

They are pricey, though, so I waited and got them slowly on sale or with cooupons.

You can see my ribbon wall in my gallery.

I personally take all of my ribbons off of the roll. I LOVE my ribbon storage, and I have had it like this for many, many years. This is one organizational idea I have not changed because it works so amazing for me. My ribbon is fast and easy to find, it doesn't get wrinkled, and I can keep ribbons of all sizes this way. You can see complete details here and how much room it saves to take them off the roll. I also live somewhere where it is dry and dusty. So, having ribbons out is not a good idea at my house.

I LOVE my Clip-It Ribbon Holder. Here is a picture if you want to see it in my craft room. I also have a separate Martha Stewart ribbon holder, inclusive for the SU In-Colors ribbon.

Good luck!

Okay. Well this was my original post and I thank you all for your suggestions. The first shelf looked great, but measurements were smaller than expected. Gutters, well, I checked it out and was not satisfied. And I'm sorry but I just don't want to take my ribbon off the rolls. Sooooo, here's what I came up with. I went to Big Lots and found this CD shelf. It big enough for all my ribbon, looks great, so here it is. The only think I did was when I instralled the shelves, I put the front little posts in at one higher than the back so the ribbon didn't roll off the shelf. It works perfect. Here's a photo, if it attaches ok. This would be my recomondation to anyone. Good luck.

Well, I don't know how to attach a photo. But the shelf was about 3 1/2 feet wide, 4 - 4 1/2 feet tall and has about 6 shelves. I could email a photo to anyone interested.

I just finished organizing my ribbon yesterday - here is the before picture of some of my ribbon (it was in a million different places in my room!)
http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...0&ppuser=93992
And then I found the tie spinner at Bed Bath and Beyond and used 2 of them and a belt organizer to hang my ribbon on. Then I hung them on the outside of my closet doors - and I love the way it looks! The pictures don't really do it justice.
