Smile Want to start home based business, where do I start

I would like to start a home based card, gift business. I sell my cards, and make money. Not a lot, but a profit over my supplies. I need tax write offs, wondering if a home business would help.

Would I start with our accountant? How much yearly income would have to be achieved before it is taxed?

TIA

Patrice

You should start with your accountant. There are federal, state, and local laws, including taxes, to consider. The IRS looks very very carefully at any deductions for use of home for a business, so you'll want to get good advice before starting.

ps. good luck!!!

If it is an official business you will need a business license and tax id. Not difficult to get. There was a small fee for both when I got mine.

If you're not in a hurry to sell some of your items, this might be an online service to start with until you get organized. It's a new auction service
and I think being new, there are no fees. I have seen homemade cards.
