Default The Ton Oscar Set and Trademark/Copyright

I've never bought any items from The Ton, but was just admiring some of their new release items.

https://thetonstampsblog.com/2017/01...release-day-2/

Scrolling down, I found the sets "Oscar" and "Oscar Superlatives".

My first and second thoughts in quick succession were that the sets were pretty cool-looking, and...uh-oh, what about trademark and copyright issues?

I've sent The Ton an email to mention the problem. The sample cards are probably so striking primarily because there are no other stamp images like them. That's because legal issues would follow!

It really would be cool to own these sets, though!

I followed your link to check out the sets you were referring to and this was posted after the description of each of those two sets:

"****PLEASE NOTE WE ARE GOING TO REFRAIN FROM RELEASING THE OSCAR AND OSCAR SUPERLATIVES STAMP SET PENDING PERMISSION FROM THE ACADEMY WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE***"

So, it looks like perhaps they have read your email and are trying to do the right thing. Interesting!

I got a very nice email last night from Effie at The Ton, stating largely the same as the blog post this morning.

Having gone to the Academy's web page and read their page on copyright, I doubt they will give permission. But if they do, I'll buy the sets!

The cost of producing sets that can't be sold is awful, but legal bills might be worse later on. I feel badly for them.
