Default Thoughts on going digital?

I just experimented going digital with Nichole Heady's new digital cardmaking kits with invitations from the "Piece of Cake" kit (you can download this one and others for free on the Paper Crafts mag site). I had mixed feelings going into it but found the process a lot of fun and I think it will definitely be helpful for when you need to make a lot of cards for an occasion (invitations, holiday cards, etc.) or if you want to make a photo card project. Although I've done some scrapbooking, I have yet to experiment with digital scrapbooking -- but of course now the digital/hybrid scrapbooking has completely taken off. I wonder if the same will happen with card making and that hybrid cards could be popular in the future. Of course there's nothing quite like hand stamping a card, but I'm open to seeing how digital will impact the world of stamping and cardmaking. What do you all think?

I hate digital card making, but I love digital scrapping. Personally, I don't like printing on my printer (it sucks) so printing cards is a bad idea for me. I find the colors are very muted on home printers. My digi pages I print at Costco, so they look great.

I don't think digital card making is a big deal for paper card makers like digiscrapping is. ANd even that attacts different types of people. KWIM?

I won't ever say never.... but not likely that I will get into digital cards or digital scrapbooking.

I truly love the process of choosing the paper, cutting the paper, inking the stamps, picking embellishments and putting the whole thing together piece by piece.

The idea of creating on a computer does not appeal to me at all.

But then, I'm o-o-o-ld.

I do a lot of creating on the computer, but not cards. I love the feel of the paper, the paints and inks, the materials. I don't think digital card making would give me the same thrill. Digital design for the web is a different story, but of course, the web is a different medium.

I've seen lots of the digiscrap freebies and pay-fers floating out there, but it hasn't grabbed me like a fantastic set of stamps or some cool new inks do.

I've just recently dabbled in digi card making and I too think it's fun. I wouldn't want to do solely digital - but I like the fact that it is there as another option for me.

I downloaded the freebies from the Paper Crafts mag website at the weekend. I love the Eat Cake kit that Nichole from Papertrey designed - such fresh colours! I plan on making a card with it this week and have already made a card with the Spiral Bouquet Boutique kit.

What I particularly love about the digi stuff I downloaded at the weekend is the ability to change the size of the image. Being able to size images so they fit within punched or die cut shapes is a fabulous option for me!

I think picture/print quality will depend on the printer you own, we have just acquired a new all-in-one printer, copier and scanner and that prints beautifully, much better than the little cheapy printer we had before! I always use the 'photo' quality option when printing digi stuff and I really am very happy with the results. Obviously, you're using up ink cartridges but as I'm not planning on doing loads of digi card making, just every now and again, I'm not worried about that.

I also love that you can use the stamps, die cuts and embellishments etc. from your stash with the digi downloads so you can put your own touch to a project. I guess that's the 'hybrid' part.

So far, I'm enjoying digi card making - and if Nichole at Papertrey wants to keep us supplied with more great digi kits, I'll be one very happy bunny!

I actually like doing my cards the old handmade way. I did try the digi cards a bit ago and I found that making them myself is much more fun. It is great though if you have alot of invites as previously said. That would be the only thing I would really use it for.

the whole thought doesnt appeal to me at all. I too like to pick the paper, cut it out, mess up a few times and crinkle it up and start again!

I made a card using Nichole's digi paper and it was fun and I definitely would do it again.

However, I agree with Emily re: quality of the paper. My printer apparently isn't very good because it did not produce really crisp images. Plus, I fooled around with the images a lot, but could not get them to resize, etc. This is ME, not the digi downloads!

Considering how much it costs to restock my printer with ink, it's definitely an option I couldn't afford to do often! I downloaded the first kit and I'm working on downloading the rest. I haven't played with them yet, though.

I downloaded the same kits from Papercrafts but haven't had a chance to actually play with any of it. I have dabbled in digital scrapbooking, but I don't really have anything to scrapbook. So I've mainly used it for monthly "friendly reminder" emails that I send out to our prevention specialists that their reports are due back to me. They have all said that they LOVE getting my emails because the graphics are so cool. What appeals to me with the digital supplies is that you never actually deplete the stash. You can keep using all the paper, ribbon, eyelets, brads, etc., that you want and you will never run out! This totally appeals to the hoarder in me. A really good friend of mine combines using one of those card programs and her stamps and real embellishments. I know when I get a card from her, it is going to be spectacular.

Ditto. To refill my Epson printer it's about $60. Crazy!!!! (But I've had such bad luck with generic inks. They ruined my last printer.)

The primary reason I do paper craft is that I LOVE PAPER! I want to feel it and see it and smell it and enjoy all the sensory experiences of paper. Also, I spend way too much time at the computer. The last thing I want to do is spend more hours sitting here.

I downloaded the same Papercrafts kit. I really enjoyed using it. I printed out what I wanted and then combined it with real cardstock, brads and ribbons. I was happy with the result and managed to print everything I needed (one 3.75 x 5 rectangle, one 3.75 square and a sentiment) on one piece of paper. I'm thinking it will be a great option when you don't have that one piece of DP you want available or don't have a certain image or sentiment. That said, I'll NEVER give up my stash of DP or my stamps.... hehehhehe.....

I downloaded all the kits Sunday and spent some time last night playing around a bit; I printed out the paper Nichole used and a few other things; I'm going to see what I can make from them tonite; I've been dying to try digital srapbooking so this is a good first step for me; I just need to find a REALLY good tutorial! I'm another one that does not want to spend a lot on ink by printing out a lot of this stuff so I won't be doing toooo much in the way of cards; digital pages I would have printed elsewhere, (as Emily mentioned); Has anyone uploaded their finished projects using the Papercrafts kits yet? I'd love to see them!

I just got a new printer so I'm planning on trying out Nichole's kits and see how I like them. I just like that they're going to co-ordinate with the Oct 15 sets so if I can do hybrid cards then that may keep my interest up! I wouldn't go fully into digital anything tho - I'm the type that has to touch and feel everything LOL!!

It's something new tho and I LOVE the kits Nichole made so I'm gonna try them out!

I'd like to clarify that "going digital" doesn't mean only using the computer. If you create a card only on the computer with the digital kit you can only create a one-layer card and also lose out on what many of you are saying is the fun of stamping -- feeling and cutting paper, inking and stamping, etc. The idea of hybrid is fun for me in particular because you can still work with your traditional stamping supplies. You can use punches, embellishments and other stamps to complete your project but have an endless supply (or at least, supply until your printer ink runs out!) of images or DP. The one thing I didn't like is being limited on my color choices. A digital kit comes packed with pre-set colors, but one of my favorite parts of stamping is selecting my color combo. Like others have said, I don't think it will be my only way of creating cards in the future but it's still a fun option occasionally!

This does not appeal to me at all, but to each his own!! I have a decent printer and use quality paper, but the digital images just don't do anything for me. I'd much rather have the "real" paper. Part of enjoying this craft is for me to really create somthing, which I think is lost when you start doing more digital stuff. But - there is something for everyone out there.

I prefer making cards by hand. Using the computer just doesn't give me the same sense of satisfaction.

I'm still deciding how I feel about it. I thought it was cool to resize the images and have the ability to print the pattern paper, but the quality of the design just wasn't captured with my printer. I felt the colors were quite a bit off for me. I also don't like doing alot of cutting and I feel like I was doing alot more cutting out of the images than I do when I stamp. It just wasn't the same for me. I did have fun playing around with the kits and I am proud of myself for being able to do it, considering I am a bit computer challenged at times. I don't think I would ever make the switch completely.
I can say, I am excited to see the sets Nichole releasing on the 15th.

I *love* the concept of digi scrapbooking, and hope to learn more.

However, computer generated cards and papers just don't seem to spark me, personally, when I hold them in my hand . . . I prefer hand-stamp/hand-created greeting cards, and to make mine that way, too.

But, the stuff "looks" cool, and, there are some folks that really like doing this that way, so to each his own!

As an "old school" artist and a computer programmer, I have very little desire to get into digital scrapbooking/cardmaking. However, I do use the computer for quickies like favor tags for class parties and invitations...

I was a convert to digi scrapbooking a while ago and love it. I like the idea of hybrid cards using digi card kits. Sometimes I look through my patterned papers and can't find the right one for a particular card, so I revert to my digi scrapbooking papers and print off a sheet. Some digi scrapbooking sites have free papers which are gorgeous for cardmaking. Sure the colours may seem a bit muted on some printers but I always adjust the brightness and colour contrast before I print them out. I have an open mind to digi cardmaking and feel that it can compliment a traditionally made card.

What program does everyone use to do their digital scrapping and card making...trying to decide if I should try my photoshop elements or buy a scrapbook program such as Pixels (hp digital scrapbook program)?

The jury is still out on digital scrapbooking and card-making with me.

While I love to journal and create interior sentiments with design software, I will never convert to all-digital. I like the process, texture and dimension. Digital layouts look phony to me. I think it would make the hobby less enjoyable for me..I spend all day in front of the computer at work. Why would I want to go home and do the same?

I have Photoshop Elements which I really like for editing photos. I don't do digital scrapbooking but have heard great reviews for Photoshop Elements for that purpose. For digital card making, you can just use a digital kit and print the images out on a program as basic as Microsoft Word. I'm not familiar with Pixels so couldn't tell you about that one!

I personally have resisted doing any digital scrapbooking or card making for a while. I love the idea of not having a ton of supplies for scrapbooking and think it might be a good option if ever we go overseas and I simply can not take all my stuff. I will play around with it and see if I like it or not BUT I will NOT print anything at home. I will send my projects to a photo printing place for printing. Inkjet printers simply do not do a great job of printing IMO. Even Laser printers, unless you spent TONS of money on them, do not do a great job. I want photo quality that will LAST.

As for Digi card making....not sure...have not even thought about it or looked into it yet! ALTHO it does sound really good for those umpteen Christmas cards I make every year!!! LOL.

I digital scrapbook, and love it. The reason why I did it was because of my daughter, I couldn't get a page done traditionally during her nap, digital has enabled me to do that, with no clean up time!

I still love cutting paper etc. so I stick to regular cardmaking to satisfy that "need" And I can get those done a lot faster than a scrapbook page.

Those programs are usually a waste...most digital scrapbooking things are designed for PSE or PSCS2/3.

I have no desire at all to try digital anything having to do with crafting. It is the paper, glue and scissors that appeal to the little girl in every woman. Why take that away.

I use Photoshop Elements 6. (Started out with Elements 2 and worked my way up.) However I also have Paint Shop Pro X (started with version 5). My personal preference is Photoshop Elements. Both programs are excellent though. What I like about PSP is the red eye for animals. PSE doesn't have a specific fix for the glowing animal eyes. (There are workarounds, but I can never remember them.) ;)

Before you buy any program, make sure to check for the cheapest price at Finders Cheapers. I used that site to find a book I wanted for Dreamweaver 8 and was able to get it the cheapest on eBay for less than $10. Otherwise, Amazon.com seems to have good prices for software. (Cheaper than buying locally anyhow.)

I think the most I'll do in digi card making is printing out images for coloring. You know sorta like a super extended library of stamps. Of course there's always the old standby of printing sentiments. I just cannot see myself doing complete cards on the computer. Part of what is so attractive about handmade cards is the lumpiness, the not quite straight lines, non perfect stamp impressions etc that we all get from time to time.

I am new here and also new to cardmaking. I love doing the background of my cards with the computer using my own tesselated patterns done with the computer art program Twisted Brush. So far I have been experimenting with notecards. The printer doent always print out the colors as expected but I am learning which colors work best. I have then used stickers on some. But what I want to do is make 3D cards when I embelish my patterned backgrounds. I also want to see if I can use black silhouettes-- and other great stamping ideas so want to learn all about inks and stamps. This is a great site that I learned about in my cardmaking forum on Yahoo. I hope to learn from you all! Annie

Love my computer for all sorts of things...except crafting. When I discovered scrapbooking and cardmaking I felt like I was being freed from my years of having to make cards and things with my desktop publishing programs. I love the creative mess that comes with papers, glues, glitters, inks and the like.

I never ever want to go back, even if the images are way more sophisticated.
