Default Stencils for Art Journaling

Hi,

I have recently been doing alot of art journaling and want to get more stencils. But the ones I liked on Amazon are too expensive.
I am looking for 2 kinds of stencils - to add 'marks' on the page and 2nd as focal images(larger in size; eg:like a girl looking out at sky etc).

Also, I would love to hear what kind of stencils do you like to use in journaling and which ones would you recommend for a beginner?

Thanks so much!

This is a great question... they really are expensive! Art journaling is new to me so I’m still trying things out.

I noticed a lot of stencils in different sizes at Michael’s; if you have one nearby, check out the section of the store with craft paint. There are some that are multiple per pack and since you can use a coupon, they’re more affordable.

I’m also trying to look around my house for things that would help add texture. Combs, leaves, mesh, jars, bunched up plastic wrap or foil...
Carolyn Dube has some interesting videos on YouTube and may inspire you.
Hope this helps!

My favorite stencils are by Stampers Anonymous. If you can use the minis (6.25x 3.25") then I think they are pretty cost effective. They are around $11 for sets of 3 stencils at Scrapbook.com.

Remember that you can create your own with punches and dies, too.For single use, you can die-cut from paper, or low-tack labels ,but lightweight acetate or similar will make more durable ones.

You may want to check out A Colorful Life Designs stencils. They have such a large variety of images, sizes and designs. There is a discount code on my blog if that helps too.

I only add stencils to my collection as I find them on sale. You can save a lot by buying smaller ones if you work in a smaller format and just want to make marks in certain sections. For that, a tag-shaped stencil for $3-$4 will be plenty! I also use a small paintbrush and watered-down black or white paint to make marks ( very inexpensive) or an acrylic paint pen which runs around $3.

I also use the edges of product boxes etc. to make marks--anything that I'm going to recycle! An empty toilet roll cardboard makes great circles :-)

Joggles has some interesting stencils, might be worth a look. I'm having a lot of fun with my gelli plate these days and YouTube has many artists who use stencils while creating their art. Might be a fun rabbit hole to go down. For me at the moment, I'm having fun making my own stencils with a hot knife and acetate sheets.

Not to enable, but joggles has a sale going on right now. I picked up some 8x12 stencils I'd had my eye on for a while.

Do you have an electronic die cutter? I make all my stencils on my cutter. I use acetate to cut them out.

I don't have an electronic die cutter. Have a cuttlebug but not many dies that I can use as a stencil. I tried cutting stencils with a xacto knife but I didn't get a neat cut and it was too time consuming. So decided to buy stencils but was surprised by the price range.
