Red face stampinup typo... beware!

I just tried to go to stampinup.com and instead of going to my saved links (like I normally do) I just typed it into the browser bar. Only I mistyped it... I typed stamppinup.com (extra P). BIG mistake. It took me to a site for pin-ups and porn! Now I've had to clear out my hisitory so my hubby does not think I've changed hobbies! Ooopps!!!

I did a similar thing once. I wanted Dick's Sporting Goods website, but I typed www(dot)dicks(dot)com. As soon as I hit enter I knew I had made a big mistake. I also got all sorts of porn stuff popping up. The worst part was that I was at work when I did it. I laugh about it now, but it wasn't so funny at the time. I was just sitting there closing pop-ups and praying that nobody would walk into my cube.

I did that *exact* same thing a few years ago when I was trying to get my HD a gift online. Fortunatly I was at home and didn't have to worry about my HR getting a call from the IT guys about my web searches! Isn't it odd that so many innocent sounding names can be twisted into something less than innocent! lol

You're right. I never call the store Dick's Sporting Goods; neither does anybody I know. We all just call it Dick's. I'm glad I'm not the only one who did this.

Yeah--did the thing on Dick's! OH MY. It's amazing how many things there are that are close to sites we normally type!

I did the same thing looking for a granola site. The company is called Bare Naked Granola, meaning natural and organic. Well... I learned the hard way to always google a company's web address unless I know for a fact it's name is also the site's name!

truer words were never spoken! But having said that, I *never* would have thought that by adding an extra "P" to stampin up's site I'd get what I did.

My personal website used to be something with kandi.net. I was trying to get have my boss (a guy) access my website to download a file. (I was in MN and he was in KS.) He was so dang funny because he kept saying, "But I keep getting a porn site!" I'd spell out my url and he kept saying "That can't possibly be right.." Finally I had HIM spell out where he was going. I don't remember if he was spelling it "Candy" or "Kandy" but regardless, it wasn't right! I told him he better email the IT department to explain why he kept accessing the porn site since we all knew they track that kind of thing. It was good for a laugh anyhow.

Once I missed spelled the SCS site. I don't know what I spelled, but whoah nellie, it was a pretty hard core porn site.

A friend at work got in a panic - she uses the work computer (once in awhile) to check on recipes - but when she tried to check hard sauce she got where she didn't mean to be!

When the internet first became available in schools I was so excited about my biology students using it for research. I quickly learned that respiratory, circulatory, and skeletal systems could all be researched on line; however, reproductive systems could not! And in case you're wondering... teenage boys are not as horrified and eager to get off "naughty" websites as we are!

I've been there too. Someone recommended a Thumb sucking/nail biting deterrent that might help my son, so I went to Amazon and searched for the product which I thought was called Thumb (I found it's actually Thum). I did find the product, but what came up along with it wasn't what I was looking for. DH and I had a good laugh. Luckily the kids were not right there at the computer too.

I've done the Dicks.com thing too.

We have a company around here that makes boxed baked goods, Tastykake. A friend at work was trying to look up their website and spelled the company name wrong and got quite the eyefull!

A friend of mine had to get her computer completely reloaded after she tried finding some sporting equipment one year at Christmas. Yes, good old Dick's really wiped out her whole system and sites kept popping back up at her days later. I don't want to know what else comes up with Thumb!!!! Oh I tried looking for some health information - irritable bowel syndrome...well, let's not go there with what came across my computer screen!! Yikes.

One time i was helping teach a group of deaf children how to navigate the internet. We had everyone gathered around and decided to look up a recipe for making home made ice cream. We were going to search it, print it, make it in class. Don't know what the trigger was other than some fettish but wow! That simple search got some nasty pics--- yes, they may be deaf but they knew exactly what was on that computer screen! Boy did their eyes get big.

Don't other school districts have filters? Ours does, and I'm a sub. I can access my hotmail, but the ads are all blocked. Other stuff is filtered, and I can't even get on boards like SCS while at school!!--filters won't let me because they may lead me astray. Well...SCS being bad for me is another story... LOL

The worst I got into was when I was planning a theme party, and searched for ''Wizard of Oz'' - whoa Nellie is right! What sicko would use a child's story for such a thing?

watch out for whitehouse.com as well. Years ago my girlfriend at work typed that in looking for something about the white house (as many young STUDENTS might for a schoool project) and was taken to a porn site! If your kids are ever doing a report on the White House, remember that it should be whitehouse.org, NOT .com!!!! I personally haven't tried this myself, so I'm not sure it's true anymore, but it's good to be aware anyways!

It's kind of sick that a lot of these "off-color" sites purposely have website names close to common sites or have their site names as common misspellings. I even heard once that they'll have a website name that is a common misspelling of something a child may be looking for to get them to accidently get on their site.
Sometimes the filters at school don't work - a neighbor's son got caught at school looking at a site with large male parts. (then again, he is a little too computer saavy and devious).
(ok......Leticia, get off your soapbox)

That happened to me before while trying to get to craigslist. I typed in craigslist.com instead of .org and wowzers! I would have died if my little girls were close by. Since then it appears as if craigslist bought them out because now you can type it about any ol' way and it brings you up to Craigslist.

I used to work in an IT department and going by accident to a porn site is really common. You won't get in trouble unless you stay there and surf around. The same log files will let the IT department know how long you spent there and if you looked at other pages on the same site. Those pop-ups show differently, so they won't cause you problems with the log files. They might leave you a virus or two, but that's different.

When my son was in the 5th or 6th grade he had to do a report on Wisconsin. His teacher told him that Borden invented malted milk balls there. Ok so you can see where this is going LOL. The poor thing typed in malted milk balls and hit the search button and Whaalla...I all heard was a yell of OMG and "MOM". Did you know that the Harley Davidson Motorcycle was invented there as well hahahah. Safer choice!!

Well, I'm in my last 30 minute stretch here at work, and you all gave me a great laugh. Nice to know I'm not alone.

A couple of years ago when my sister was getting married I did a search for "wedding bubbles" at work. I found a site to click on and boy oh boy it was not bubbles. And what made it worse was that when I clicked out of the site another one would pop up and when I clicked out of that one another would pop up. Let's just say it took close to 10 clicks to get that stuff off my WORK computer. Luckily my boss passed by after the 2nd or 3rd click and I was able to get his attention and he saw exactly what was going on.

Whew!!!

LOL- my hubby (works in architecture) was at work and looked up some type of insulation or something by name- (assuming the name was the site) and he got a whole page of naked people!
He said he was closing windows as fast as he could and hoping no-body came in the office!

For these types of mistakes..And I've learned NOT do it anymore.

I use my Google Search: When looking for sites. Cause even if I get it wrong somehow. I don't have a Direct link to a bad site.
