Stampin Up stocking punch discontinued?
Is it true that SU will not carry over the new stocking builder punch that is currently in their 2011 holiday mini catalog? Is it being discontinued so soon after being released? SU demos, tell me it ain't so!

Yes, it's true. The punch is not being carried over.

Unfortunately, it's true. Here's the email my demo forwarded to me this week.....
Stocking Builder Punch December 20, 2011
Our occasion-specific mini catalogs allow us the opportunity to share the latest seasonal products with you and your customers, and we often carry over products from our mini catalogs into the following Idea Book & Catalog. This time, however, we have decided not to carry over the Stocking Builder Punch (item 124095) from the 2011 Holiday Mini Catalog into the next Idea Book & Catalog. Instead we will offer other great designs in its place--not to mention a trendy, new design planned for next holiday season.
Once the current inventory of this punch has been depleted, it will no longer be available for purchase. We hope many Stampin' Up! stockings will adorn cards and brighten holiday projects this season and look forward to seeing what you create with the next seasonal design.

I love this punch but the first one I got was defective. It completely jammed on me while using it the very first time, even jumping on it wouldn't budge it. SU sent me an immediate replacement, which is working fine right now, but my demo mentioned that they said there were lots of problems with that punch. I wonder if that statement from SU really translates to "we can't get consistent good quality with this punch so we're not going to have any more made" I will be bummed if it jams again and I can't get a replacement, after shelling out for the matching stamp set! Maybe EK Success will release it on their own.

I just ordered one, hopefully it will work fine! It's such a cute punch. I received a card from a friend who used it!

I hope not too, Amber! My new one is working great, it's getting a lot of use for gift tags today!
There are so many cute uses for this punch.....hobby horses, reindeer, baby booties. I can't figure out why they would discontinue it so soon (except for the defective thing).

Haven't had any problem with mine.... It sounds like they have something planned or in the works for the next holiday mini so I am looking forward to seeing what that is.

I think a lot of the problems were people punching through the glimmer paper. The punches (especially the more detailed ones) aren't really made for the glimmer paper. I know mine doesn't like to and I have to push it open when I do it so I quit using it with the glimmer.....
I am surprised and sad that it's not sticking around since I broke down and got it and the set. And of course I didn't even use it a handful of times....story of my stamping life! I'm guessing they will have some sort of big shot die (sizzlits maybe) to replace it....

Wow, yet another issue with a new style punch of theirs. Is this the first time that a punch hasn't carried over to the main catalog? I'm using mine (so far it works fine) with the stamp set next year-no one I send cards to will know the difference.
I'd love it if they would go with more of the thin, Spellbinders type dies. I have plenty of space for those and they won't jam or stop working properly!

I didn't read that as a technical issue or defect with the punch. It sounded more like they were making alternate design choices. Maybe they'll make one of the new thin shaped dies instead. We'll just have to wait and see.

It is not SU's style. Although they have been very positive about the style being a room saver, EK Success changed the style they were manufacturing, so SU -- not having its own ironworks factory--had to change.
Just for the record, I have never had an SU/EK punch (any style) be defective. I pretty much only get SU punches now, but I read about these problems and wonder what's up. I have had a Marvy just come apart in my hands. It was so weird.

Oh yes, I know EK makes their punches. I had a new style one I bought at Joann's jam on me too. I love the old style ones, but they are such a space hog.

I have had several defective ek success punches but never a SU one. I have taken all of them back to michaels where I bought them. The ones I didn't take back, my husband was able to adjust them so they could work. I like the older style better, they do seem to punch better. I picked up all the ones I didn't have when SU put theirs on sale. I do agree the newer ones are easier to store though.

If SU does switch to a die for these shapes, I hope it's a Sizzix Originals die. They cut just about anything. The Sizzix Sizzlits only cut a sheet of paper (or something similarly thin).

I bought one and love it! Surprised that it didn't sell well which I am guessing is the case.

Actually, it did sell well, which is why we demos were so surprised. It was one of my top selling items from the holiday mini. I also heard a rumor that someone tried to order it last night (last day of the minicatalog period) and it was already out of stock. Oh well, they promised us something else great for next year!

It did not punch through the glimmer paper well and I think THAT is the reason it was D/C'd. I think they will come up with a BS die (framelits maybe?) for the next catalog. They said to expect something and I know they had a LOT of trouble with people breaking them on the glimmer paper. That's my thoughts on it. I think it was a BIG seller but it just didn't work out they way they had planned.

I've used my punch with the glimmer paper numerous times and never had any problems. I'm glad I got this one while it was available. As for problems I don't know of anyone personally that has had issues although I have heard from other demo's that when using glimmer paper sometimes it would jam up, not a problem for me though.
