Default Spiral bound catty

I took my catalog to Staples and had it spiral bound with laminated front and back covers. What a difference it makes when looking through the book. It lays flat so you don't have to worry about it closing on you. It only costs $8.00. Some people are adding sheet protectors so they can put minis and supply lists with it. I will do that next year! Thanks to my upline who gave me this idea!

Spiral binding my catty is a must for as often as I flip through it. Otherwise I wear out the binding!

How do you undo the existing binding?

I LOVE my spiral binded catalog! And yes, I usually put a pocket sheet right inside the front cover and another inside the back cover for mini's and any specials.

They will cut it off when they bind it. I don't have a Staples nearby, but Office Max does it also and VERY cheaply!!

Interesting... do you lose any major parts of image that way?

I used to get my catalog sprial bound but you do have to make sure the person doing it does it right. One year at Office Max the guy was trying to take care of 2 other customers in-between binding mine and he bound it backwords! Now I just purchasethe clear covers from Bare Books, which I also give out to my club members.

I do mine at Office Max every year. It comes to around $5 to have it spiral bound with no laminate or add in's.

Office Max is @ $5 and no, I've never lost any images! They cut very closely to the edge. And thankfully, I must have very competent Office Max employees....they have never messed up a catalog for me yet!
In the past I have just had them add a clear cover to the front and back, this year, I actually cut off the covers and laminated them myself before taking it to be spiral bound. (Thank goodness I did...their laminating machine was down!)
As much as I go thru mine, it's the only way to keep it looking nice!!

I've never spiral bound mine, but I've put them in 3-ring binders before. You'd be amazed at how easily the pages peel off the existing glue binding. You just carefully pull off the cover, then peel off/pull off a small clump of pages at a time. If the little ridges that remain (from the cutting of the edges so the original glue has something to stick to) bother you, then just cut them off. I've done a bunch like this and they don't take long at all. But if you're taking it to get it spiral bound, they usually do the cutting for you.

Something else to add -- when the catalog goes live on line, the Supplies list can be printed, so that could be added in the back when it's bound.

I get mine done every year for the past few years. Usually at Office Depot for $5. I just drop it off and pick it up in about 30 minutes, depends on how busy they are. I like the idea of adding folders for Minis.

Default binding catalog

I get mine done at Office Depot for free! Here's how: They have a recycing program that will give you a three dollar credit for bringing in printer cartridges. My husband brings them home from work and I take them whenever I'm nearby. Some clerks will tell you that they only take five cartridges at a time, and others will take pity on me because I live an hour away and don't get there too often. You have to sign up for the rewards program that they have, but it's super easy. Then they mail you a gift card every quarter with the amount that you've earned on it. We earned a whopper of a reward when we bought a laptop for our daughter. Be careful though and don't let the gift card expire! I didn't read the fine print and lost some money because of that. That way, you're recycling and getting your lovely catalog bound just the way you want and don't pay anything! I'm going to have the pockets and the card recipes added this year - great idea since I'm still crabby about them being left out! That was one of the reasons I bought a catalog faithfully - you listening, SU?

I'm lucky. My SU demonstator does it for me and adds 2 extra pockets for a total of 6. She knows to do my catalogs as soon as they come in and I am having my old ones done to make a library set of them.

I took mine to Staples today. I paid $2 for the cut and $2.95 for the spiral...total $4.95. Not bad and I love it. I think I'll get several of my favorite cooking magizines together and do the same. It's a great way of keeping them all in one place.

One tip that's very helpful to the clerk before asking for this process:
Open up the catty to the index pages, and ask that they try to stay close enough to the back binding so that none of the little print/numbers will be lost in the process. Once I started showing them how close some of the text can get, the clerks seemed to have a much better idea.

I posted this in another thread, but it bears mentioning. Someone had posted that OD messed up her catalog, and she had to run home and get another one.

I went to OD, picked out a clear cover, a heavier duty plastic for the back, and a clear coil. I also gave them a plastic pocket to insert in the front. Then I left to go shopping. I came back later to pick it up, got my teacher discount, and paid just under $5.
Well, I started looking through my catalog, and realized that two pages felt funny. They were not glossy, but just regular paper. OD must have messed them up, copied my original pages, and put those in their place without ever telling me.
Then I went through the catalog again, and realized that about 30 pages front and back had actually been recopied. Most of them were on glossy paper, but they must have run out, and the last two were on regular copy paper. How did I know they had been recopied? The whole right hand side of the pages showed the holes that had been punched. The colored tabs that say "All Natural", etc, were basically missing. So, they had messed up on the punching, copied the pages with the messed up holes, and not even said anything to me. Also, I had previously gone through and hilighted with a pink marker, the sets that I own. I could see the difference in the color on the copied pages versus the original pages. Now I realize that all of the colors on the copied pages are just a little off.
Unfortunately, I went to an OD that is about 45 minutes away, so it's probably not worth my time and gas money to go back and complain.
In the future, I will definitely stay there when I get it done, and I will also ask them to punch holes in half the catalog at a time. Everything was after page 100, so I think that may solve the problem.

I'm trying to figure out why (beyond cost) SU doesn't offer this as an option that you could pay for. Obviously bunches of us are paying an extra $5 for this service somewhere else. They could charge me an extra $5 for the catalog, include the card recipes, and spiral bind it and I would be a really happy camper! An additional note - Fed Ex/Kinko's told me today that not all of their locations will do this service as cutting off the thick binding sometimes damages the cutting blades which are quite costly to replace. I ended up at Office Max and it cost me $4.88.

You can do it with a bind-it-all but it would quite cumbersome. In fact I would think it would be more work than spending the $5.00 or so to have it done. I guess its a matter of what your time is worth. Just had my SU catty done this afternoon at OfficeMax for $4.79 including clear cover and black back cover. This is my first time I've done this and I'm loving it!
