Default So, who IS Frankenstein?

Ok, this is a spin-off of another spin off.

Who do you think of when you see the word Frankenstein? Be honest... what image pops into your head when you think of Frankenstein?

I know in my head that he's the doctor who created the creature, but I always think of the creature when I hear the name. I think most peopl do!

This is what I think of as well. At Halloween, when my kids' say they want to dress up like Frankenstein, I get out the green face paint and clunky shoes, not a white lab coat....

Well, in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein- he is the doctor.

However, in most everything else that references her work (Bride of frankenstein etc) he is the monster. I've heard this explained as that because he was a 'child' of Dr. Frankenstein he would have the same surname- and thus be a Frankenstein as well. I think it's a poor excuse, but there are plenty of things published or released in which Frankenstein is the monster- just not the original work.

He's the doctor and the monster, and Herman Munster, lol. When I hear of Frankenstein, I think of Herman Munster. Really. I loved that show and Matthew does now.

In literature he's the doctor but in pop culture he's clearly the monster. And I but the father/son connection, only I think we should go with the Scandinavian tradition and call the monster Frankensteinson.

The green guy, even though I know it's actually the doctor.

The first thing that pops in my head, monster. And that's how I answered the poll. But he's really Frankenstein's monster. He comes to me at night sometimes, scary!!!

My 16 y/o daughter thinks John Kerry looks like Frankenstein -- the monster, not the doctor. And I agree with all of you -- I KNOW it is the doctor, but think of the monster.

Frankenstein is the monster, Dr. Frankenstein is the man who created him. That's what I think!

As I mentioned in another thread, years ago I took a class taught by the author on of the "Annotated Frankenstein", Leonard Wolf. He would throw a fit if the Creature was ever referred to as Frankenstein (or even a monster). He could only be referred to as “The Creature”. I personally think “Dr. Frankenstein’s Creature” is also fine. The Creature is not a blood relation of Dr. Frankenstein (though he is a relation to lots & lots & lots of other people) and the Doctor did not adopt the Creature so I do not buy into the whole “son” theory.
BTW if you read the book The Creature is very well read and speaks beautifully! LOL

Well, when I hear "Frankenstein," the first thing I think of is Gene Wilder in Young Doctor Frankenstein, lol... Wilder was a hoot in the movie, and it was clear that HE was Frankenstein ("that's STEEN!"), not the monster. SUCH a funny movie!

Aside from the giant green guy this too is the first thing that pops into my head. What a great go to movie. So many great actors and great lines. When the monster is singing putting on the ritz, classic. Everytime it lightenings and thunders when *ack, what's her name* is mentioned. Teri Garr and the "roll in the hay" bit.

Hmmm....this might be a movie that I could actually see owning. I hate buying movies and then only watching them once or twice.

Oh sorry got off topic. Not enough sleep last night.

Oh yeah and I answered that I think of the green guy too.

Me too!!! When I hear Frankenstein, the first thing I think of is Herman Munster...

Does that make me old??? Or can I blame it on the re-runs on TBS???

I like how well she stated this - and I understand who people are referring to when they call the monster or creature "Frankenstein", but it doesn't make me forget the novel and who is correctly called Frankenstein. But I wouldn't correct people (unless it's family - then I do!).

I voted for the Dr. who created him, because it's true.

Strange how it got so turned around.

I first think of the doctor, not the green guy from the movies. My mother told me about the book, and she made sure I knew that Frankenstein was the doctor. Some things your mother teach you stick with you forever!

That being said, in October (before Halloween), when I hear "Frankenstein", I do think of the green guy. But then I don't call him Frankenstein. I call him Frank or Frankie, since kids dressed up as the green guy tend to look cute, not scary.

it's funny, but when I hear the "creature", I think of the creature from the Black Lagoon, not Frankenstein's creature...

lol, that's what I think of when I hear "Frankenstein" (and I'm sure I'm showing my age here).
