Question Smudging ink

Hi - so I just opened a new Stampin up classic black ink pad - and when I started to color my image, the lines smudged. I tried pencil, chalk, and ink - everything picked up the black of the lines, and smudged into the color. The paper I was using was the same I have used for a million other images from my old classic black ink pad. Thanks for any insight....

You may want to put your question in general stamping. Your ink question is in the buy/sell thread.

From what I remember, SU black isn't permanent. I don't think it ever was, even when I was a demo back in 2004. I'm not sure why the old pad didn't smear.

It isn't the coloring medium causing the smearing; the ink just stays wet for a long time making it easy to smear it with any touch. You can either just heat set it or even sprinkle on some embossing powder (clear or black) and heat emboss to set. Many demos and others have remarked previously that they switched over to using other black inks. My two faves: Memento Tuxedo Black is great for coloring with alcohol markers. Versafine Onyx black is great for stamping sentiments (very crisp), coloring with pencils and watercolor pencil/pen coloring.

I use Ranger Archival Jet Black for everything I'm going to color, and Versafine Onyx Black or Versafine Clair Nocturne for sentiments. I pretty much ignore my other black ink pads...

By the way - welcome to Splitcoast!

If that is the only black ink you have, try heat setting the image before coloring. Sometimes that helps with the bleeding issues.

Please note that Stampin' Up! retired the Basic Black ink pad. I believe that was in 2018.
