Default Sending a care package to Iraq.

I am sending a care package to Iraq. My brother is in charge of a platoon that is just recently stationed in Iraq.Any cards, letters, or other things are appreciated. He has sent a list of things that they would like.

Sunblock
Eye drops to get dirt out of their eyes
Lifesavers
Chapstick
Hand sanitizer
sunglasses (even cheap ones)
Ramen noodles
Propel or Crystal light packages that you put in bottled water.
wet wipes
hackey sack balls or other small toys for the iraqi children
any candy- starburst, skitlles...anything that is not chocolate.
Chips like pringles in a hard package
gum
nutri grain or energy bars
deodrant (119 degrees normal temp)

Anything else you think of would be appreciated. I know they are having a hard time lately as some fellow soldiers were killed and I want to try and make them feel as at home as possible.

If you want to send something my mom and dad and sister and I would really appreciate it.

I will work on collecting some stuff for you. I sent a care package to my husbands cousin the first time he was over there. I bought those packs of cookies like you buy for school lunches, those are nice as there are alot of individual packs. I remember how much it meant to him as he had to drive about 3 miles to call his mom and tell her he got my package. I hope he stays safe over there and comes home quickly

Thank you so much. He is stationed in Iraq for 15 months, so he wont be home for a long time still . He has been to afghanistan 2 times before this. We sent care packages to him while he was in Afghanistan, but he said that there were TONS of soldiers that did not get anything and he always shared his. He has 10 men under his command. I know I can not send enough for all of them, but maybe we can get a little more to share. He said the eye drops are greatly appreciated. The sand gets stuck in their eyes and scrapes and makes them miserable. Anyhow again I really appreciate this so very very much.

i do the Adopt-a-soldier one and just an FYI, the hand sanitizers can't be shipped through the mail anymore. I can't remember if I read it on the Adopt-a-soldier site or the post office site, but just so you don't get in trouble trying to ship that.

Thank you so much. I know it is going to cheer them up and make their tour over there much a little bit more tolerable.

Did you want some cards too? For them to send home to their families and loved ones?

Glad to help out any way we can. I will get something to you in the mail next week.

Default Yes Please

Im sure they would love them! I know my brother still tried to send things hope for my sons and my mom and dad but he said it was hard because a letter did not seem good enough, and he wanted something special. So I know that others would love them as well. Thank you so so very much. *big hugs from my family and all the soldiers families as well*

Is there a certain date you need them by?

I think eye drops are still ok. I looked online and found hand sanitizer is a no no but it didnt say anything about eye drops so I am assuming they are ok. I am going to send out a package in two weeks (17th) and another on the 31st for any stuff that I get after that date. So there is plenty of time. Thank you so much for helping as well. My sons are very involved as well in the whole process sending things to uncle aaron and his "friends".

You should tell your brother to sign up on anysoldier.com.

He'll most likely get a lot of care packages. This is where I get most of the troops names that I send packages to.

Default Adopt a soldier

Our Girl Scout troop is adopting a soldier, and we will be sending her care pkgs every month. Thanks for sharing the list of goodies to send,
wewill meet and gather. If there is extras that can't fit in one flate rate box,
maybe we can share with you. Eye drops sound like a good thing that they will need! One of our moms is an optometrist, maybe I can get samples!

Your brother and his friends are in our prayers!

You are wonderful for coordinating this and thank you everyone contributing. The soldiers do appreciate every item!!

My DH is also on a 15 month deployment, and he has been *adopted* by a wonderful woman who gathers items from people at her church for him and his platoon. I can not express the gratitude for all the things she sends, and the work she does.

You both are true Angels!!

I know there are soldiers who have been "forgotten" so I am going to do everything I can to make sure all those men and women know that they are appreciated and missed back her. I know someone here at home is missing them just like I miss my brother, and I want to bring comfort to their families as well, that their son or daughter is thought of, and prayed for.

Yes it is. My brother said in Afghanistan they played poker on days off for flavored drink packets that people got in care packages lol. It is all they had of "value" there. Thank you.

My DH IM'd me one day on Yahoo...and his only request was 6 jars of Goober Grape Jelly!!! LOL I about fell outta my chair laughing! He has never eaten that before! Apparently, it is THE THING at the Chow Hall where he is, and is hard to get during meals! So, he wanted me to send some to him!

The Crystal Lite and other single drink powders that they can put in water bottles are AWESOME. They LOVE those.

Hi there!
I would be happy to send some of the drink mixes and some face stick sunscreen. That would be the easiest and most portable sunscreen I think. Thanks for organizing this! Katie

Default boxes

I have been sending boxes through www.anysoldier.com

I have 2 ready to go, if you would like to PM me with your brother's APO address, I will send one out to him when I get back next week- will be home Tuesday evening.

It is nice to send boxes to the guys in Iraq- they are in full uniform over there in the heat- I would not be able to make it more than a day or two!!! I am a hot heat whimp!!!

You can send individually wrapped sanitizing cloths though. Also the saline eyedrops are cheaper and better than the medicated ones. Overuse of the medicated ones isn't good. Saline nasal spray to clean the dust out of noses is great too.

Hi Christina,
My daughter and I just finished up our shopping and we're boxing up the stuff right now. One question: Is it all men that are in your brother's platoon?

Also, I have some extra cards that I have made that I could stick in for them to send back to the States for their loved ones, but didn't know if they were able to do that...

Yes they are. They are able to mail packages/mail back for free so they would love that. There is one woman in the platoon the rest are guys. I hope you had fun picking things out together. My sons love trying to find things that they think uncle aaron and his friends will like or be able to use.

I have to agree with Jenn, thank you for coordinating this. My DH is deployed as well (this time to Afghanistan, last year was Iraq). He is on the adopt a soldier site. He is the contact for his platoon so when people send him packages he shares them with everyone. I send him a package twice a month normally so he has plenty for himself so what he gets from other people goes out to everyone else. It is nice to know though that there are others out there who are supporting our men and women in uniform. Dh is always so excited every time he gets a package because he gets to share it.

I agree with Vee, the sanintizing wipes would be good. and Like Jenn said, the powdered drink mixes that can be put in water is awesome! I send about 6 boxes in every package I send to DH. Another thing he has recently started asking for is those heat wraps. His knees hurt from being banged up against the vehicle sides all day on the bumpy roads so the heat wraps really help him on the days the pain is really bad.

Thank you again. You are a sweetheart.

Oh, and as you mentioned, there are a lot of soldiers who don't get anything. I would suggest, if someone is wanting to send packages to someone who gets no mail, contact your local military post, or guard unit and ask for a name of a soldier who gets no mail so you can send them things.

Speaking of women in the platoon...reminds me of another story that happened with woman that adopted my DH, with care packages she sent to them.

She is so particular about what she collects and how she packs the boxes. One particular collection she had, there was quite a bit of feminine hygiene products gathered. She boxed them up seperately from the other box she packed for the males, and sealed the boxes. Marked them accordingly, and mailed them off.

About a month or so later, my DH calls me and tells me that the box he opened in front of the guys gathered to see what was up for grabs this time......was actually a box of pads and tampons!!! LOL
She mis-marked the boxes!!!

Oh, how I wish I was there right at that moment!!! Can you just see all their faces??

She boxed them up seperately from the other box she packed for the males, and sealed the boxes. Marked them accordingly, and mailed them off.

About a month or so later, my DH calls me and tells me that the box he opened in front of the guys gathered to see what was up for grabs this time......was actually a box of pads and tampons!!! LOL
She mis-marked the boxes!!!

Oh, how I wish I was there right at that moment!!! Can you just see all their faces??
*snort* Bless her heart!

OH MY WORD! That made me laugh so much! I had to tell my dad about it. I can just see my brother hahaha. Oh gosh that would be so funny. Wow. I know some young gets get so grossed out and freak out about those things. It would have been so so funny to see. Thank you for sharing that story!
