I just can't jump this hurdle and get started with my own personal scrapbooks.
I can't decide 8 1/2 x 11 or 12 x 12.
I'm overwhelmed to get started.
I'm a perfectionist and afraid I won't like what I come up with soon after I've started.
Please give me your best scrapbooking advice and tips!
I started scrapbooking back in 1993 and really liked the 12x12. Just for the sheer size. It allowed me to add a couple more pictures or momentos to make one page show the event or really allowed me to dress up two pages and to make a really nice spread.
I have been interested in the smaller just for the storage issue and because most of the items that hold my paper do not allow for the 12x12 to lie flat.
IMHO, I like 12 x 12. It allows for me to have more room and gives me space to be *creative* (if at all ;)) I started off on a 8 1/2 x 11, and it was just too small... :(
I am currently using 8.5X11 because this way I already have everything that I need to get started. I bought one of SU's albums and I am good to go. I use hermafix most of the time, but I use all of the glues at different times. All of the SU adhesives are safe to use. I stamp my own background paper and embellishments. I mat with our cardstock. I just got Just Journalin for Christmas and so now I use it. Before I used to just write my journaling without lines on a separate piece (in case of mistakes) and attached it to the page. You can use any of the embellishments and ideas you already use for cards. The concepts translate very well. Besides an album, the only extra thing (beyond your basic stampin suppplies) that I recommend is some journaling markers. Our stampin write ones are very light and don't show up well for that. Other than that, just try it with some photos you have doubles of. That way if you don't like it, you don't have to keep it. Start with your most recent roll of film because it is the freshest in your mind. You can always work your way backwards if you want to. Also, you don't have to use every photo. Just pick the best ones or the ones that best express the event or emotion you are trying to convey. Experiment and have fun!

PS I am considering doing my wedding album in 12X12 so I can have more room for more photos.
I use 8 1/2 by 11 for my regular chronological photos. I usually fill up one per year. Any special albums, I have been doing in 12 by 12 because you can fit more photos on each page.
Hi, I am a brandnew member of this board. I just found it today. My name is Beate Johns and I currently live at Scott AFB in Illinois. We are about to move to San Antonio, Texas. I am a homemaker and mother of three wonderful children and a totally addicted SU demonstrator.
I love my 8 1/2 x 11 album. I started scrapbooking last fall. My husband asked me to start. I really enjoy it. I like the smaller size versus the 12x12 because it is easier to have enough pictures for a double spread.
I love all the SU products for the scrapbooking. I love the coordinating colors in cardstock and pads. I like that we have all colors in pigment ink now. I like the Just Journaling and the Just Journaling II, as well as the Journaling Fun set. The last is my favorite. I can't wait until my customers can buy it.
I also like the Phrase starter, the new Elegant beginnings and all the Frame stamp sets.
I never wanted to scrapbook until I saw all the stamps available for it.
hi Beate, welcome! We hope you enjoy the site, and be sure and let us know if you have any questions, comments, etc. I've added you to a usergroup set aside for SU! demos. Next time you visit the forums you'll see a special section reserved for SU! demos only.
I don't think the size matters as much as the theme. When getting started pick a book and theme it. I started with Grandma books then went to Christmas. That way I did not have to feel overwhelmed with all the ideas out there. Another is make a two page spread for each year of your child's life. Pick your favorite pictures and run from there. I first loved 8 1/2 x 11 cause I was just getting started and it felt less overwhelming, then when I got bolder I was ready for the fancy stuff and wanted more room from the 12 x 12. The best way to start is organize your pictures, pick out the ones you love and run with it. And remember it may not be perfect the first time but then do you remember your first casserole, don't you wish you had framed it?

Hey Tracy, it's been a year and a half, which size did you finally pick?
Blah, I hate it. I am with those who are "matchy matchy." I don't think it is a bad price though after our discounts, so if I liked it, I would be all over it.
Whoa, so do you realize this thread was started back in 2003? I was going to comment and say how much I like 12x12 and leave a link to my Stamping and Scrapbooking Website but I don't think the OP is going to care anymore. Perhaps someone else will.
I tried 12x12 and it was just too much space for me. The 8-1/2x11 seems to be the perfect size, you can fit the right number of pictures on it and still have room for embellishments.
I do most of my work in 12 X 12. Plenty of room for photo's and embellishments. I have made 8 X 8's for gifts. Their great...only room for 1 pix per page but enough space for you to showcase your talent. CTMH has a 9 X 9 size that I love!! That little bit of extra space gives room for 2 pictures, journaling and embellishments. It is easy to handle. I am currently doing a personal album in that size and really liking how it is turning out.
I usually do 12 x 12 scrapbooks so that I have plenty of room for pictures and embellishments. I did make a 6 x 6 scrapbook of my daughters and an 8 x 8 scrapbook of my granddaughter.
Wow - what a blast from the past. I read Beate's post about being new to the site and thought she was kidding. And then I saw Davin's post welcoming her. What??? Then I saw the date. too funny.
I use 8.5 x 11 because for me it's a great size. Not too big (12 x 12 is scary big to me) and not too small. I also have done several 8 x 8s, but that can be a challenge. I guess I got into the 8.5 x 11 because that's the size CS that I already had, so I didn't have to get a seperate stash of paper for making a scrapbook. That seemed like a lot of extra supplies in a different size so I went with the smaller size because I have a limited craft area. One other thing is that the 12 x 12 books are larger to store on a shelf also.
OMG, I was replying too (i prefer 8.5x11!) but realize Tracy (the OP) probably already figured it out by now... Tracy, if you haven't by now, there's not much more we can do for you! hee hee!
When I started, I used 8.5 by 11 and thought they were huge......Did one son's baseball history all on 8.5 x 11 and he loves it. Did other son's life from birth to 18(high school graduation) on a8.5 x 11 ( took three albums). When second son went to Merchant Marine Academy, I went manic over the photos downloaded during his INDOC weeks and started a 12 x 12....He is now a 2nd classman and I am on his second 12 x 12 of just Academy Life. I also have made a few smaller albums for grandkids. So size is subject dependent for me I guess. right now I have a stock of 12 x 12 albums to fill so I will be doing those for a few years I guess......I have more than 40 years of married life to scrap plus albums for grown children ( they never really leave home do they). I think I probably try to put too many photos in each layout but I can't throw them away usually. I don't use many embellishments as they take up room I could use for a photo. I journal right under the photo usually.

I was going to reply too, till I looked at the date.
But really what I was wondering was why the options had been left so limited. I'm no scrapbooker, but when I've been asked to do LOs for gift albums, they've usually been 8x8 which I find easy. I like square, and that's not so big as to be daunting.
What a blast from the past!! Still trying to work out how it was revived, as the first recent post makes no sense at all to me - unless some spam was deleted.
