Default Which retired sets will be big bucks on eBay in a year or two?

I remember seeing a thread like this last catalog retirement. It was a fun thread! So, which retiring SU set do you think will be an eBay best seller in a year or two?

Ah, Michelle...this is the question of the year!!! If we could just figure this out we would all be seriously rich!!!

On a serious note, I've watched ebay quite a bit in the past few months looking for some retired sets, and it tends to be the "realistic", artistic type sets that go for the big bucks. Prime examples are Happy Trails, Wolf, Dream Catcher, Serengeti, and a lot of the nature sets. Also, a lot of the very old (early 90's) sets with lots of stamps in them tend to go for a lot.

But there's also the strange phenomenon of the random, quirky sets that for whatever reason are highly sought after. The Christmas/Hawaiian set with Santa on the beach comes to mind. When I was a demo, I couldn't sell a set like that to save my life, and now it doesn't go for less than 40-50! Weird.

Someone get out the crystal ball, please....Michelle and I want to be millionaires!!!

I agree with RockyMountainStamper. I think it is a lot like fashion. Real trendy stuff comes and goes pretty quickly, remember the clothes and hair in the 80's? The more nicely drawn realistic images usually have more staying power.

It also seems that the more expensive sets go up in price more. Maybe because fewer of them were sold as more people buy the cheaper sets? There seems to be a lot of the same small retired sets for sale causing them to sell cheaper because of the supply and demand.

Remember when the mini ended that Monkey Business was in? It was going for a lot of $ on eBay. This might be a good one - although everyone that thought they missed it probably bought it once it hit the catalog.

Off topic, but some of the clothes on the racks right now looks like stuff from the 80s! I've seen girls at the middle school wear leg warmer type-things - and it wasn't 80s day! lol

On topic, you have a point about the more expensive sets. It makes sense!

So with this reasoning, Children of the Corn should be bringing in big bucks in a year or two!!!

Hahaha!

What was the real name of that set? Was it Charming Children? I did sell one of them, but they were just a bit freaky!

The hanukkah set - because any other set I've seen from SU that is for Hanukkah gets jacked up in price on ebay due to the lack of available jewish stamps.

I paid over 50 for festive fun - before I knew anything about SU. I jsut thought it was a cool set.

I do agree cold play will be in demand. It's just a too cute and too useful stamp set.

Not necessarily - I just sold the retired SU set L'Chayim on the bay and only got $7.95 for it.

I think that whatever is decided here that will be popular won't be it, because everyone will stock up on it and it will be freely available... So I think that any set that isn't mentioned here will be popular.

That is why it goes for so much, because there aren't that many out there...because no one wanted when it was available.

I would say any of the animals that are realistic, most of the masculine sets (cars, boats, lighthouses, etc) and anything that is a little quirky or unique.

Right now Im only thinking about the hostess sets. Those ALWAYS go for more even when they are current, so they'll definately be big $$$ when they are gone for good!

When I first saw the catty in July I told dh that I thought the Dickens set "Keep Christmas" would be a big ebay seller in the future. It seems to be the genre sets that sell the best.

I think Flaky Friends is darling and will be a big seller down the road. It is timeless. Well...all snowmen sets are timeless to me as I love them.

It seems as though the retired ones that sell the highest on ebay are the sets with really awesome drawings/sketch type images for men's cards. Think Wild Wild West.

I think the artwork was better in 2003 and prior catalogs. Not much in the way of guy's stamps on the market right now that's interests me. Bareback will probably become a collectors item but based on what's selling on ebay lately, I predict the doodle line and simple sketch type sets won't bring much. For example I just bought a New Unmounted Mixed Bouquet set on ebay for the opening bid of $4.99 (No one bid against me.) It was $28.95 in last years catalog.

My Best friend bougth bareback this year. I doubt she has even used it. I mounted it for her and made her some scrapbook pages so she would be inclined to use it

I own a lot of these popular sets, but can't bring myself to part with them, even tho I never use them! I feel like a collector and these sets are the "jewels" of my collection

This is how I am too! i have almost all of the big ticket sets - except Serengeti - but just cannot part with them. I do use them but probably not often enough to warrant keeping them...but I do love them!

Default retired sets

I missed out on Threes Trees...now famous by Michelle Zindorf....It is double what it sold for....

I got lucky on e-bay a while back- someone from a charity listed Godspeed under rubber stamps- not Stampin Up.....I got it for $15.00....Wahoo!

I am unmounting mine.......I wonder how that will affect their selling price.....
