The easiest way to see sizes - is to Google - envelope sizes - http://www.paper-papers.com/envelope-size-chart.html - go down to the bottom and you will see the standard sizes for most cards. A "studio" or letter size envelope is about 9 1/2 by 4 1/8 - fold a piece of card stock in half, and cut your card stock down 1/4 on 2 sides and it should fit. Does that help?
If you mean the really long one, it's called a #10 Business/Legal size (4 1/8 x 9.5). Walmart has also been selling a larger A6 size (4.5 x 6 1/4)(also called a Bar 6) in place of the A2 invitation size they used to carry.
Other sizes are: A7 (5 x 7), A9 (5.5 x 8.5 this is a half sheet size when folded), Square (5 x 5), Square (6 x 6), 4 Bar (3.5 x 4 7/8).
These are a few more sizes, but they're not as commonly used. Note: the following are ENVELOPE sizes, the actual card size would normally be at least an 1/8 inch smaller.
A1 (3 5/8 x 5 1/8 )
A8 (5.5 x 8.5)
5 1/2 Bar (4 3/8 x 5 3/4)
# 6 1/4 (3.5 X 6)
#6 1/2 (3.5 X 6.5)
#6 3/4 (3 5/8 X 6.5)
#7 (3 3/4 X 6 3/4)
#8 (3 7/8 x 7.5)
#8 5/8 (3 5/8 x 8 5/8 )
#9 (3 7/8 x 8 7/8 )
#11 (4.5 x 10 3/8 )
#12 (4.75 x 11)
#14 (5 x 11.5)
I was reading Go To Sketches just earlier today and there are cards of all kinds of sizes in there. Sizes I'd never seen before.
I guess you have to let your envelopes guide you. Do you need a snug fit? If not then you have lots of options. Can you make your own envelopes? If so again you can do pretty much anything right? Do you mostly hand deliver cards or tuck them into gift bags? Any size for you then.
Whatever you do, have fun.
