Question Washi Tape?

I'm just getting interested in it. I bought three rolls this spring and used a little in a This and That Journal. I really didn't use much because I didn't have any creative ideas for it. I mean, I know you can use it to "tape" a photo or some piece of memorabilia onto your scrapbook. I used a couple pieces as page accents, but what else? It is so popular, but I'm just not getting it. Please share how you've used it, or why you like it.

I have a lot of washi tape, but sometimes I wonder why I have so much. I don't really like to use it torn and sloppy like a lot of people do...I'm just not into that look. I find I use it mostly like I would either ribbon or thin strips of patterned paper on card fronts or sometimes real thin matching tape around the border of the inside of a card to add some color if it's blank inside. I actually use it more around the house than on my cards...for strengthening and decorating edges of storage containers for my craft supplies or borders on old banged-up furniture. I'd be interested in other ideas as well!

I love it. I had to smile to see your post because I was just finding some new-to-me styles online and wondering if I should order it.

I use it all the time instead of ribbon. I like it also as a simple embellishment, with a torn edge. I'll layer them. Back it with cardstock or patterned paper.

The advantages, in my opinion, are:
  • Lays flat
  • Tears easily
  • Doesn't have to wrap - trims nicely flush with the edge of layer
  • Many are somewhat transparent allowing design/pattern to show through
  • They have a nice sheen and finish
  • The transparency works well to layer one washi tape on another, too.
  • Looks good cut neatly or torn
  • A million patterns! And solids. . . vintage, graphic. . . everything
  • Easy to store - a roll of washi takes up a lot less space than ribbon
  • Repositionable
  • Great for masculine cards
  • It's a really nice simple accent for the inside of cards
    ....

I'm sure that list can go on. I love it. Love the patterns, the options, and love working with it. I am just starting to play around with using it as a focal point and making embellishments with it.

I have very little space to store my supplies and have really simplified my embellishments. I only have a few rolls of ribbon now. (No more Fray Check, bow tying, ribbon that shifts or overly bump cards . )

Washi tape is a must-have and absolute favorite for me! Have fun with it!

If washi tape is repositionable, does it stay stuck when you want it to? Does the tape curl on the edge of a card?

I've never had it curl up after finishing a card. Once I am certain it's where I want it, I'll burnish it down really well, and it stays put.

There were some samples at the St. Louis regional where they grouped a few strips together and stamped over them in black. That was really cool looking. I agree to search on pinterest, I have found lots of ideas there!

Hi, my name is Lynn and I'm a washi-aholic. I recently found a website that I'm loving more and more each day...so much so that I added it to my Feedly RSS feed: google Washi Tape Crafts dot com (for some reason, SCS won't let me add a direct link.)
So many great ideas!

I am with AnnieWills, I don't like the torn look. As soon as I got the email with the following card, I made up a whole bunch of thank you cards and plan on making more with different sentiments. I am really LOVING washi tape.

Look on Pinterest for more ideas on how to use it and store it. I have found so many great ideas on there. Cindy Littler (heartofdakota) on Pinterest

Today I used washi to bundle lamp cords and tomorrow I'm making twist ties.

Aha! I bet that works better than a sticky note. For now, I'm trying to stock up on reinkers, ink pads and some other things before I buy the magnetic platform.

Thanks so much for all the great ideas!
I got some washi tape in the mail yesterday and used it on an envelope already I think it matches the card pretty well.

Here is a link to one demo's cards:Stampin' Up ideas and supplies from Vicky at Crafting Clare's Paper Moments

Scroll down to July 5/2013. I bought some really interesting washi tapes from Michaels (Recollection brand) and quite enjoyed doing this design. I am now hooked as well on washi tape. I was waiting to order Stampin Up's but got bitten by the washi bug before I was ready to order. I will still order from SU, but nice to know Michaels had them on for 40% off last week.

This popped up on my Pinterest Page and I thought I'd share. Scroll down the post and you'll see how they used an exacto knife to create a chevron pattern with washi. I thought it was quite striking

I saw in an email from Artisian Avenue how to make a feather using Washi tape and wire. They do the magazine Somerset Studio. The feather is very easy to make.

I have 60someodd rolls at this point and I'm constantly buying more when I see cute new patterns.

On cards, I'm not big into the messy look most of the time, so I use it all the way across, under a layer in place of ribbon. It's smooth and flat and creates on bulk, which I like. Once, I used alternating shades of green to create Christmas trees with some gold for the trunk, easily reproducible for everyone in my office.

While I have used some on cards, I personally use it more for crafty projects than cards. Most recently, I laid down alternating strips of red and blue patterned washi across a white cardstock. I burnished them down well, then went to town with my scalloped circle punches. I folded the circles in half and arranged them on blue baker's twine and adhered them--July 4th washi bunting! It was so easy and came out so cute on my mantel and across my desk at work.

Lastly, I just use it to "make things cute," by which I mean I add a strip to seal envelopes when I'm paying bills, use some when I make deposits at the bank, add some to plain paper when writing a quick note to someone, etc. It's just fun.

I agree totally with Phantom! I've been trying lately to make cards that mail easier and Washi Tape fits the bill...I posted a card last Friday:

A Work of Heart: Fabulous BigShot Friday

I tore the edge of the tape and used it as like a background "stacking" it up on the white cardstock. Very little bulk added to the final product. A couple of weeks ago I posted a card that used it flush against the edge:

A Work of Heart: A Fabulous Peek

like a decorative strip.

I REALLY like it, and it's super fun to work with! I'm sure I'll be incorparating it into my cards more and more.

Karla - I don't normally like the torn look, but your card really looks nice and classy...I guess it depends on the pattern and color. Thanks for sharing this...I'm going to give tearing another try now!

Christina - I love the idea of someone in my credit card company's collection dept staring at my envelope dumbfounded by the bright washi tape...so I'm def doing this next time!

I won a challenge a couple months ago and the prize was washi tape. I thought, "OK, now what?" Up to now I've only used it to hold down dies, etc. However, this week I decided to challenge myself to use it on a card. I used it to make a checkboard pattern. Here's a pic of my card on my blog:

Reading this thread has given me more ideas....maybe I WILL have to branch out beyond my 3 rolls.

I love washi because it comes is so many colors and patterns. I can add color and layers to my cards easily, without adding a lot of bulk. You can also check out the washi blog for lots of fun ideas.
