Default Is it funny, or in bad taste

Hello, I have this old Stampacadabra voodoo doll stamp and I think it would make a cute, humorous card and that certain people may find it funny. I would use a thinking of you sentiment. My husband thought it might offend the receiver. I realize I would need to carefully choose the recipient but wanted to get your input. Thanks in advance.

For sure you'd need to know your audience, but dang, for someone going through a rough divorce, dealing with a horrible co-worker or boss, on one of 'those'  committees ...? ;)

I have an really old limited edition (brand) backstamp that reads... this card was made by hand, and if you throw it away these same hands will fashion a doll in your image and stick pins in its butt...

seems to me I have seen a very similar sentiment being sold recently from someone still making stamps ( maybe riley & co?) but, with all the pins in the body I think this could be funny paired with that image.
I generally use it as a back stamp but, I have paired it with an old Kraftin Kimmie that was doing something to a voodoo type stuffed doll once?

the main thing is to know the person you are sending it to, that is where the taste thing comes in.

I agree that the right audience would find it amusing. "Thinking of you" is especially amusing for someone who is "going through it" to acknowledge that you're aware of how un-fun the situation is. "Mama told me there'd be days like this" or something similar would work, too.

Once I gave my child's first grade teacher a purchased card very similar to that kind of idea because she had a wicked class and seemed a little down to me. Little did I know she was quietly going through a divorce. She laughed until she cried, put her arm around me and told me it was just what she needed. That card remained taped on the inside of her storage locker beside her desk. That was 30 years ago and whenever she sees me she has a huge smile on her face. I think the stamp is really cute and funny and would never be offended if it was made for me.

I would love it and I’m usually “not the type”. My husband received a card from a friend when he was quite ill. It had a great saying in it, don’t remember it exactly, but something to the affect, “I hope you don’t die.” We laughed so hard, and still do over 35 years later. His mother however didn’t find it funny at all.
Sooo, all that to say be sure of the recipient. I’m still chuckling, the image is quite cute/funny. 😁 Would be great for someone recovering from an accident. Just my two cents.

That stamp is so cute. It's creepy cute. That would be right up my alley. I would love to get something like that. I agree with the others definitely need to think of the audience.

I might give it as a get well card to someone who had to have a lot of stuff done...maybe a cancer patient? They usually tell me they feel like a pin cushion.

You could flip it and send it to a friend during divorce/horrible boss with some straight pins and invite them to stick them in on bad days. Pop it up on foam.

Somehow make it a Halloween card?

OMG, if a friend sent that to me, I'd roll on the floor laughing. I love it!! I would never think of sending that to someone I had bad feelings for though. It's just men, I think. I work with my friend's husband. One day, through him, she sent me an enamel pin that said "Crafty B***h" on it. I was thrilled and he gave me a weird look.

Great image for the right person! I've seen lots of good sentiment ideas on this thread. I might add "Ever have one of those days?"

I'm in the audience who would find it funny too. Totally agree, it's down to knowing the recipients sense of humour.
Not the same thing, but should amuse you all.

When I was at work, I'd often get requests to make cards for people, and when it was for a wedding, I'd ask about colours, so I could tie it in. One lady, Doreen, had asked for a wedding card, but didn't know the wedding theme. She also had a thing about getting her words mixed up, which is where it gets funny.
As I had no colour brief, in the end I went with silver and a sort of navy blue.
On the Monday after the wedding, at break time in the canteen- so lots of other people there- she came over and said those colours were exactly what the wedding theme turned out to be. How did I know? She says, 'You must be psychotic'. Combined sharp intake of breath from the others present, and I'm almost wetting myself laughing. Doreen asks what she said wrong, and someone else- I couldn't breathe for laughing, let alone talk, explained the difference between Psychic and Psychotic, poor Doreen was mortified.

I agree with “know your audience”. I bought a stamp at a convention that I laughed at till I had tears in my eyes and gasped for air. Now I cringe when I come across it.  I could never send a card with this sentiment. It says something like “ If you can’t be the sharpest tool in the shed at least you can be the Hoe”. I was going to use it with the Art Impressions stamp of the Farmer holding a hoe. There is absolutely no one on Earth I would feel comfortable sending that to. Maybe Ill make a card anyway and keep it.

I agree with "know your recipient" advice! I personally find it a bit creepy and not amusing...BUT with the right situation & sentiment, I guess it could be funny.

Put me in the "I think it's funny" pile. And absolutely perfect for someone going through a divorce. Darn it. Now I wish I had a voodoo doll stamp....

Default Voodoo stamp

I think its hysterical!
It would only offend the recipient, if that was your purpose in sending it. LOL
If you ever tire of it and wanna part with it....i would be interested in purchasing it. 😬

There are voodoo doll stamps out there! Just google on voodo stamp cards. Here’s one where the stamper decides just what voodoo to do.

Some cardmakers cringe at snarky or weird cards; I agree with everyone - know your recipient!

More on Etsy, including a zombie apocalypse.

Default Voodoo doll?

I work in property management and didn't think of Voodoo doll as my first thought. I thought of all the tattooed, pin-through-the-lip, pierced noses, etc. applicants who come in my office. All that is missing in the image is the "tires" in the earlobes! Thankfully they have more clothes on when they arrive!

I think it's ugly, so please don't send me this on a card.

You know what, I actually have a person that this would be perfect for at this moment. Would you be willing to send me two stamped images? I'd be happy to trade something or send you a few bucks. If you are willing, send me a message.

Default LOVE IT!

I think you answered your own question..."certain people may find it funny" You just have to make sure you REALLY REALLY know who those people are! I'd love to have a card with that on it to give to a friend of mine that believes in witchcraft. She would probably ROFL!

I think, if you could print up your own sentiment to the effect:

Has 2020 got you feeling a little like this?

you could go on to say "Well, I'm wishing you a Happy Birthday!" or "Time to pull out all the pins and get on with the celebrating"

Or cover it with a band-aid and "Hope That Helps"

I have a lot of stamps like this that I bought because I thought they were just hilarious. Then I realized I couldn't think of anyone that would appreciate the humor. So, ended up joining an ATC swap with like-minded stampers who loved quirky, weird images with strange/snarky sentiments...and was able to use most of them. My sister and I exchange humorous stamps for birthdays and anniversaries, so I use them for her as well.
I, personally, love this image and would just crack up if I received a card with it on the front. However, many of my local friends probably would think it was too "weird" for them. So, knowing your recipient is always good advice. Someone (or two or three) out there will get a real kick out it!

I make and sell sarcastically affectionate cards at two farmers markets during the season and a couple of Winter markets. When I started out selling my cards I was selling 117, 250, 380 for the first three years. I added in the sarcastically affectionate (including a few f bombs) my sales soared up to 2500 cards a years for the past 4 years. This year is a lot different and I am only selling at one market. People love the humour, most of them thrive on it.

That stamp is awesome.

That stamp is awesome.

I think, when people buy a handmade card, they're not looking for the typical Hallmark style sentiments and design. So the snarky, humorous and quirky designs appeal to those markets. I know that I am drawn to quirky and humorous cards myself, even if many others are not.
I liked hearing about your real-life experience with sales of the different card styles for a first hand point of view.

Thank you Mrsclark2001! I just uploaded the card to my gallery. I’ll be sending it to my girlfriend. She’s had multiple surgeries lately and I think she’ll get a chuckle out of it.
The sentiment, “trust me, you’re Lovely”, fits since I know she doesn’t feel that way right now.
I love the image and thought others might like to see how it could be funny, as some have thought otherwise. Enjoy!

Default Thank you Mindy!

Thank you Mindy for sending me the adorable voodoo doll sentiments. They are the best!

They say:
When killing them with kindness doesn’t work, try voodoo!
Sometimes all you need is a voodoo doll and some alone time to make everything better.
Healing vibes.
