I was hoping to sell my loads of old leftover SU catalogs on ebay and while checking out the competition I came across one for a 1992 catalog and it's currently going for $71.80 (and it doesn't end for 2 more days)!!! OMG, who would pay that ????? Too bad I don't have any that old because those puppies would be listed right now!! haha.

Probably someone just trying to put together a complete collection of all the catalogs. I doubt it has anything to do with wanting ideas (although who knows?). It should be a good thing that people consider our catalogs to be collectible items!

Maybe they have a sample in the catalog and don't have one or theirs got ruined! I would pay a lot of money to have a copy of a catty that had a sample of mine it it!

I have to admit, the bidding on this catalog really doesn't surprise me. The older, more rare, catalogs are hard to find and generally do go for more money.
As far as stamp sets go, I have seen some sets sell for as much as $200- Honest it's true. I've seen Wild, Wild, West sell for that much.
I can't understand why someone would spend that much money on a catalog or stamp set, but I'm even more puzzled as to why someone would pay more for something on ebay than the listed catalog price.

Some people in my stamp class told me about one SU set (I do not remember the name) that went for OVER $100.00!
that's not rare at all. older sets can fetch that. it was probably 'wild west' (i think that's the name). it gets that all the time cause it's apparently a "rare" set.
but a single catty going for $70+? that's absurd. absolutely absurd.

That's just crazy!!! Come on, its a catalog!
One stamper's "trash" is another's treasure! I'm sure we all own something that someone would shake their head at and call "absurd" once they heard what we paid for it! ;)

I guess these days, a catty, a stamp or some other thing is worth what how much someone is willing to pay for it no matter what their reason is.
I can't imagine paying that much for a catty or stamp set, but some folks can get really obssessed with getting that particular item - Especially those who are out of the country where items like SU aren't readily available.
SU cattys are collectors items. I've seen them go for $30 or better. About like some of the very first issues of Take Ten. Lesson to all of us...don't throw away old catalogs, magazines, etc.
I once had a friend who had a collection of Seventeen magazines from her childhood. Her sister put them on Ebay for an auction. I think she earned something like $600 or more. One issue alone fetched $300.;)

Ok so what was the final total on that catalog made of fine paper.. with its richly inked self.. with its.. special look (erm I have no clue ya'll I'm just funnin lol )
I remember the older Ornaments issues from Just Cross Stitch went on E-Bay for a $100 and more each time because they are rare and people who own them do not want to part with them because they are not done with the patterns, but the SU! catalogues... Stamping styles evolve so much over time, I'm not even sure the samples are that relevant anymore.
Well, now I know what to do with the catalogues I have left from the years I've been a demo: stash away for a few years, then sell for retirement fund!

I am the OP and I have to add that since people are talking about what people will pay for things ... check this out ...
When I was in 5th or 6th grade, I collected Wacky Pack stickers. Who remembers those??? Well, my mom would take my sister and I out on the day the new series were released and she'd buy us a whole box each (yes, we were spoiled rotten ... but we appreciated everything) so we could hopefully get at least one of each stickers in the series. Anyhow, I kept those stickers all these years and about 7 years ago the subject of Wacky Packs came up and I decided to look them up on the internet. I found a forum for Wacky Packs and found someone who ended up buying all of my extras ... for $800!!!! ONE STICKER (for Grimes' Greasy Chunks) got $70 alone !!! For one sticker !!! I still have almost all the series, one of each.
Of course I never would have paid that, but I gladly accepted the $800 !!!

Wow, maybe these people would adopt me since they have money to burn. I could see buying it if I was published and didn't ahve a copy, but really, that could buy me a few stamp sets.
