I just love the plaidmaker - used it to make all my Christmas cards this year. I do not use a brayer I just use a sponge and ink pad. A friend of mine also has the plaidmaker and she only uses chalk. Definitely great for masculine cards. It is time consuming but fun.
what is a plaid maker? duh! i was wondering how you guys got all those pretty plaid designs on your cards! i thought it was just plaid background paper! hahaha. is this some kind of tool you use? does SU sell it?

If your demo (or upline / sideline / whoever) has a plaidmaker, try it first before you buy it. I like mine a lot, but it's time consuming to sponge the plaids. I'm a little sponge-impaired though - can't seem to sponge anything without completely inking the ends of all my fingers and sometimes my nose too. :oops:
I tend to make an entire 8.5x11 sheet of a single plaid at a time... figure I might as well, since I've got the whole setup out and inky fingers already!

mfisher....you poor thing! You've never heard of it? Page 207. Two sizes (i prefer the small but hey..that's me). Works great for "boy cards" using navy and olive ink.
The plaid maker consists of two stencils that are 12" by 12". First you lay your paper down and place 1 plaid maker down on top(there are slits). Then use a brayer or sponge to fill in the lines. Turn it and repeat. Next take the second stencil and do the same thing using a different color. It is fast and easy. I have not used mine much but am glad that I have it. SU does carry this item.

I love mine. They are a little time consuming but the results are worth it. I also just use a sponge and not a brayer. I love having just the color that I want
I have the Plaid Maker and I don't care for it at all! It's much too messy for me.....I get ink everywhere. I know that most people don't like the retired Perfect Plaid stamp set, but I love using it. I think it's much quicker and cleaner than the stencils. For scrapbooking, though, the Plaid Maker would be the better choice because you can do an entire sheet of CS with it.

Hey guys, do not use the sponges, but use the sponge daubers! Same great effect, but your fingers stay nice and clean! I absolutely love my plaid makers.

I've looked in craft stores and I can't find them.
I love my plaid maker. Probably will not find in the stores, it was created and designed by a SU demo. An award was earned for being so creative and SU put it into production.
I love. love. love my plaid maker! Yes, you get inky fingers, but I consider them a badge of honor :lol: I prefer using the brayer over a sponge. It's easier to get the color on the CS.
I love my plaid maker, too. I use sponges rather than a brayer (I admit to being brayerly challenged!), and more pounce than rub (hate the squeak from rubbing). It gives a softer look than the brayer, but I like it.
It's in the catalog, of course you need it! :lol:

If you have a sponge brayer, it goes really fast, and your fingers stay clean.

I don't use the plaidmakers as much as I would like to because it is kind of a pain to get everything out for it but I do love how it looks. If I do cards with them I usually do quite a few to make it worth the effort. I recommend having two foam attachments and if possible two handles. It's so much easier than doing one color, cleaning the brayer and doing the other color. Carol
I love the look, hate the process. It's messy and time consuming, IMO. It is fun to work wish the finished product though. I made myself do about 8 pages in one day so that I'd have it on the ready when I wanted it. Seriously though, it just sits there.

I'm like most everybody else, LOVE the results not the 'doing'!
But you should get it, I only use the small, can't imagine what the big would be like... I've done 2 workshops over the past couple years and everyone does great work with it. The colour combinations that you can create beats any patterned paper/hands down. (Sold a couple after each workshop, so they are not so horrible to work with, really...)
Gotta get it!

hmmmm think need to add this to my "wish" list. I have been thinking about it for some time now so the time is now to get it ordered before I become a demo so I can make some neat examples to demo in January!!

Wait til January - put it toward your own quota. If you are still welcome at Lana's, borrow hers! I hear she makes big batches of plaid at at time, so she probably wouldn't miss it :lol:
I saw a demo with the large plaidmaker that was pretty cool. The wheel images fit perfectly inside the large slots. She foam brayered one set of lines and then did the wheel image either on top of the brayered lines or did the wheel image in between the brayered lines. So not plaid, but striped in the end design.
Other than that, I'd say go with the small one if you're really making plaid.

ya she wouldn't let me in.. roflmao I think my demo mentioned the other day that she has one, will probably call her and ask. I can do them while she teaches at school (she is an art teacher in elementary school) then she can stop on the way back and pick it up. She basically goes right by here anyway to get to the school she teaches at.
I have had mine for over a year, and still haven't used it! I got a sponge brayer to put in, but then realized if I want to use more than one color, I would have to wash it, wait for drying, then do more. I guess I should just order a few of the brayers to use, but until reading this, I didn't know sponges would work!
