Here's a copy of my original post:
This is a forward from my husband. I know that SCSer's can make a BIG difference. At this time of the year I'm aware the a lot of charities are asking for us to support them, but I'm choosing to support our injured soldiers too.
An excerpt from a blog online a buddy made me aware of, please consider doing this. There is still plenty of time left! and even if you miss Christmas these heroes still need to call home. I attended the Marine Corps Ball a few weeks ago in San Antonio (at Lackland AFB where Wiford Hall Hosp is at) and many wounded Marines ( and a few soldiers) were in attendance. They all had devastating injuries that are going to take a long time and many surgical procedures to correct to the best extent possible, none will ever be the same. This war is producing the highest survival rate of serious injuries of any war in history due to excellent, rapid medical intervention and ballistic vest and helmets. Those two items are saving lives, but much of the worst injuries are occurring where there is no protection, the limbs and face. I saw a literal faceless soldier from a mine blast at the USMC Ball. His spirits are great. From what a young Marine told us he is a dog handler and was clearing a minefield when one went off taking his face. He is now helping out as a dog handler instructor at the Joint Military K9 school at Lackland. He going through a lot. He probably needs to talk to his family and he is one of many.

"Finally, from a naval officer I respect a great deal, an e-mail on how to aid wounded troops in the two weeks left before Christmas:
"Yellow ribbons tied around trees and red, white and blue
stickers on the backs SUVs saying "Support our Troops"
are things that make civilians feel good but do nothing
for the men and women actually in uniform."
So please consider the following:
The number ONE request at Walter Reed hospital is phone cards. The government doesn't pay long distance phone charges and these wounded soldiers are rationing their calls home.
Many will be there throughout the holidays.
Really support our troops --Send phone cards of any amount to:
Medical Family Assistance Center
Walter Reed Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20307-5001
They say they need an "endless" supply of these -- any amount even $5 is greatly appreciated.
Walmart has good prices on AT&T cards, Sams Club is even better, if you are a member.
I am sure you would feel better about doing this, than to buy something for a third cousin, that would find it on the closet shelf six months later, and wonder where it came from.
Please pass this portion on, copy and paste it into your e-mail."
