Default Niiiiiice....

God bless my stepmom. I really do like her, but she just called me and asked if I could make her 50 birthday cards and she'll pay me **50 cents** each.

Wowsers.

I better get to work! That's like a whopping $2/hour if I stamp pretty fast!! Not including the cost of supplies of course.

Maybe for her birthday I'll give her some.

No rush. I'm being totally fecetious by saying I need to get to work

I told her I have several projects I'm working on and I don't think I can do that right now.

I'd much rather make 5 fabulous cards that are appreciated (and not get payed for them) than 50 cards that are valued at 50 cents each, kwim??

Gosh, I'm not sure I would have agreed to 50 cents a card. I wouldn't have charged my normal fee, but 50 cents??? Of coarse, upsetting a step-mom wouldn't be too cool either. Poor mamaK.

Well...if she wants to pay 50/card, it's only fair you give her an example of what a 50/card looks like.

Then show her a $2/card one.

You can always type Happy Birthday in a festive font on plain white paper, cut out the message & glue it onto the forest foliage paper! That should equal 50 cents!

Too funny! For an embellishment, you could use some milk rings! That's just trash so it doesn't add to the cost!

Maybe you could add some "flash" by using pull tabs from soda cans. Or crimp strips of aluminum foil before adding to the forest foliage card...I've always thought metal embellishments add to the "fancy factor" of a card. yeah!

How about you use up the million and one twist ties that come with garbage bags--maybe they could hold on the milk rings or pull tabs!

Or for 50 cents a card, you could make a postcard, that way there's no $$ spent for an envelope!

Golly, I'm on a roll! The possibilties are endless! And I have to make a Father's Day card for DH--would it be okay if I CASE some of these ideas?!? Of course, I'd be sure to give credit to y'all!

I remember (vaguely) a card I did at my uplines house that was on glossy c/s, there was a square background (one of those 1" shapes stamps) and then an image that you would normally color (an outline stamp if you will, not a bold stamp) stamped in black over the square. Then underneath we stamped a greeting in black. It all took less then 5 minutes and wasn't too shabby looking -- you could do those for 50 cents and a whole 50 of them stamped in half an hour I bet -- probably would take longer to cut them down and fold them!

Anyway thought I would help. I never do nonlayered cards but it was a cute card and the thought/idea popped into my head.

Thank you pigfingers!!!

Perfect!

I scanned it in (my scanner hates solid white and this looks wretched in the scan, but is actually cute, VERY SIMPLE, but cute, IRL)

THANK YOU!

Smile Cards for Step-Mom

Hi MamaK-

I think it was really sweet of your step-mom to ask you to make her the cards AND to offer to pay you - no matter how small of an amount it might be. Despite the amount of work that is entailed, she obviously thinks highly of your work. I would doubt that she needs 50 cards all at one time - but maybe her putting out $25.00 all at once IS a lot of money to her. I think if it were me, giving that fact that it was my step-mom, I would do it for her gladly, and then present them to her wrapped in a pretty ribbon (with maybe a pen attached ) - and not charge her at all. You could do it just out of the kindness of your heart OR tell her she has in the past babysat for you OR if she hasn't - tell her you'd rather her a "kid-free" night some evening to spend with your DH after having to spend your free time on her cards! It would probably take her by surprise (all along her thinking she was going to have to pay you) and mean a lot to her. If you decide to just gibe it to her as a "gift" for no reason - no strings attached - tell her to "pay ot forward" to someone else through an act of kindness. Just an idea!

Simple and cute card, mamak. I love pink and black together. Does she need masculine cards, too? Maybe hunter and navy with leaf or dragonfly in the same layout?

Ok, have you been bragging about how cheap you can make cards rather than buy them? LOL Maybe that's where she got the idea that 50 cents was ok. MY DD always brags that she can make them for 35 cents. Maybe she thought she WAS giving you extra!

sorry for the terrible scan up there, it is actually a lot cuter IRL! I swear!

I get the sentiment stampfunny, and trust me, I am quite generous with my stepmom..... but it was more of a slap in the face to be told my stuff is worth 50 cents.

I'd rather spontaneously give someone a packet of cards (which I do, and quite often!) then have the 50cent offer. And no, that's not alot of money to them.

Sorry if I sound bitter. I'm really not. I do love her it was just a little "ouch" moment.

Hmph...reminds me of my MIL, bless her. A few years back, I had several watercolor paintings hanging in a restaurant for sale and had even sold one there. The restaurant ended up going out of business, so the owner called me to come pick them up. I had priced them all around $250 to $300.

So I bring all these paintings home and decide that there was one that I was going to hang in my bedroom. It's a very cheerful painting of bluebirds singing. I redecorated the room to go with the painting.

So my MIL asks me one day what did I do with the paintings from the restaurant. I told her I had them and was going to hang at least one of them in my house. "Which one?" she wanted to know. I told her. She said, "Oh, well, I thought maybe you could give me that one, because that's the one I really like." The way she said it seemed to imply that no matter what, I should just give it to her. I told her I had already decided to hang it in my bedroom.

The implication was that she should get a $275 painting for free because she's my MIL and even when I decided it would look nice in my own house I should just suck it up and give it to her anyway. Sorry. No way, LOL! It's not like I had never given her a painting, I had given her a small one when DH and I were first married. But the underlying tone was, it doesn't take any work to make something like that and I can just paint another one for myself if I want to.

Mother-in-laws, oh boy. Can't shoot 'em and well...... can't shoot 'em. I have a quick MIL story. One time my DH was out of town on business and I was at home taking care of our 3 young children. She called up while he was out of town and I reminded her he was away. She said, "Oh, so you are a bachelorette this week?!" Umm, no, I am single mom this week. BIG difference.

MamaK, sounds like your MIL just doesn't get it. Your simple cards may be the way to go to just keep the peace.

You have a BIG heart! God bless you!! I totally agree.

She probably doesn't realize how much work making this many cards would be, and probably might even think that she's doing a favour for her by paying you for the cards... kwim?
