I am new to stamping and I was wondering if all you experienced and talented ladies could give me your opinion - ink spots or pads - which is better to have?
I started by getting all of the spots first (Except for the large pads of classic black and craft white) Then I have been slowly buying the large pads of the colors that I use the most. The spots are great for taking to retreats and crops because they are small.
Location: I am a Utah desert rat! I fry in the summer, but, oh, the winters are spectacular!

As a dem I use the pads more, but many of my customers buy the spots first because they are economical. It's great that they can be reinked. I'd say start with the spots!
Karen, where did you get the blank spots? I'd love to know!
I don't like the spot at all,, I have 2 family's of CRAFT spots that I use sometimes, but I prefer the pads, a little more expensive, but way easier to use with larger stamps, It is easier to ink up your BG's stamps with a brayer,
If you are looking at cost i guess the spots are the way to go, but they can be a pain in the patootie. My 2 cents worth...

I like the spots first. I have 3 families of craft spots and 1 classic spots. I only have 2 pads. I do not have a brayer yet. I find spots easy to ink up BG stamps. I like using both inks so it works well for me and is a great way to have all colors. I have 1 large pad of craft ink - love it and one large pad of classic - hard to get an even coat on BG and larger stamps.
Speaking of only Classic Ink. I find the spots I use often tend to fray a lot. The ones I use occasionally are in great shape. I am getting the large pads of colors I use often in craft and put up with the frays. If I were only using classic ink I would still get the larger pads in colors I use all the time.
Speaking of classic. Pads and spots are great. Pad does not go as evenly on larger and BG stamps like spots but not as bad as the classic pads.

I started with the spots from one color family (the one I liked the most), the variety pack paper and of course black classic pad. Then as I discovered colors I liked more, I bought individual pads. I recently picked up the bold brights spots cuz I never use those colors, but you never know when you might need one. The spots are a great alternative until you learn what colors you tend to gravitate towards. I even bought reinkers of some of the colors and reinked my spots. But for doing backgrounds... go with the pads all the way. It is too frustrating to get even, bold coverage with a spot.
I think it is a personal choice. I would start with one family of the spots ... and buy a large black and brown pad (they dont come in spots) and go from there. I like using the spots. I like that I have all 48 colours without having to "collect" them for a long period of time. I use them on my background stamps and I dont have a problem inking them, just takes a little longer. I do, however, like full pads if you are going to get into wheels. You can use your full pads instead of buying a bunch of ink cartrides. That's my 2 cents worth! Whatever you do, you will figure out what is right for you, as you go along. You may also gravitate towards a certain family colour more often. I love the Bold and Brights ... they are my most used colours, but I've heard a lot of people say they like those colours the least. Have fun!
Thanks ladies, for all your opinions. I love this website and all the valuable information/knowledge that is passed around. I appreciate that you took the time to give me your opinions.
I would start out with the spots first. They are a really good investment! There a way to sample all the colors you want and to discover wich colors you like. They are also really helpful when you buy an assorted package of cardstock. I didn't buy the stampin' spots when I first started, and found it really hard to stamp what I wanted because I didn't always have matching inks to paper. I'd say go with the spots now, and gradually work your way up. I like having the bigger pads more, but start with the spots so you can discover which colors you like, and would use. Then buy the big pads.

I'm not a demo (at least not yet) but I can't imagine why she would tell you that...I've had mine for quite a while and they are still fine and work perfectly. Demos out there...what are your thougths? I hope that I'm not stepping on anyone's toes but all that I can think of is that she wants you to spend more money buying all of the pads. Could I be right? Sorry if I've offended anyone but that is just my humble opionion.
I started with the spots about 2-1/2 yrs ago. I still use my spots and I have one full size pad set (earth elements) I am now purchasing..slowly..full size pads for the colors I use the most. One thing that I discovered is that it isn't so much the size of the ink pad but rather how much ink is in it. I have therefore started getting the reinkers so all my pads can be nice and juicy! For me, that has been the most important part.

Thats kind of what I'm wondering (but didn't want to say )...i did spend more money and maybe didn't need too???
The one set of spots that I have seem to be pretty juicy, but...??
I have one set of full size Classic pads and the rest as spots, but I am planning to upgrade to full size pads. The spots are great to start with, but as I've gotten more into stamping I really prefer the full size ones. I have lots of background stamps and after a while it gets pretty tiring inking them with a spot.
for me, the spots would dry up much too quickly. I stamp all of the time and love the big classic stamp pads. I use alot of background stamps and the spots are next to impossible with these. It is really a personal preference though, I do a lot of clubs so the gals use my pads all of the time.
Well I don't think I like the spots...But I have to say when I first started SU! I just jumped in with both feet and bought all of the Classic Ink Pad's!!! I love them all and use most of them often. I have never regreted it. Sometimes you can be even more creative when you have colours that you wouldn't normally "choose first". I know it can be costly, but there are ways to get discounts. If you are a demo you get the discount and if you are just a lover of SU! you could hostess a workshop. It's cheaper in the long run to by them in colour families.
I have two color families of spots, and at least as many of the full sized pads. I much prefer the large pads, but I had to go with spots to complete my color collection due to $$$ constraints. I wanted as many colors but couldn't afford all the big pads. I am slowly replacing the spots. I find the larger pads easier to work with and makes for faster stamping (not as much time inking, more time stamping). JMO.
I have just a few of the regular pads and most of the spots. Eventually, I'll get more and more regular pads. One thing I don't like about the spots is the possibility of "wicking". Some of my spots have wicked so bad (badly?) that I can't read the color. But, all that said, I'd still start with the spots and see what you use the most.
Guess I'm like a lot of you. I bought all the spots plus brown and a couple of others that weren't in spots...except black that I got when I signed up and hate because of the way it smears. I use India Ink black. Anyway, I started buying 2-3 reinkers every time I placed an order and I am gradually now buying the large pads. I know I CAN ink background stamps but it does take a while and using the spots with wheels is just impossible. There are probably a few colors of large pads I'll never buy just because they are colors I can't stand and never use anyway.
I have too many of each. I would say one good reason for spots is coloring things like flowers in different colors, ie. green stem and pink blossom is easier with the spots.
