In Need Of Verses For A Sympathy Card
I just got some sad news this evening that someone that I knew from my church passed away earlier this evening and therefor I need to make a sympathy card. So seeing that I am not really in the mood to do any type of searching for a verse to put in the card I was just wondering if anyone had any nice verses that would be suitable for a sympathy card.
Thanks
Sonya

Usually I put "With Deepest Sympathy" on the front. Then inside I like to say:
"May You Find the Courage to Face Tomorrow
In the Love That Surrounds You Today."

Here's one that I use often when I need a religous sympathy:
Printed on left side of card:
...the Lord's unfailing love surrounds those who trust in Him...
Psalms 32:10
Printed on the main part of the card:
May words of comfort rest gently upon your heart,
and in time may they become words of healing.
Hope this is helpful to you.

I need a verse for someone who probably will not be getting better. She has cancer and may not know just how serious it is. Anyone have any suggestions for this?

Sometimes when t just needs to be simple, I put Thinking of You on the outside and then stamp With Sympathy on the inside.

every circusmstance is different, but here's one that I have used for a serious illness
To die proudly when it is no longer possible to live proudly.
The angels are always near to those who are grieving,
To whisper to them,
That their loved one,
Is safe in the hand of the Lord….

I don't know about an actual verse, but someone wrote the following in a sympathy card to me once and it really touched me and I've used it every since:
May memories of your (insert relationship (father, mother, e.g. or use Loved One) be a comfort to you at this time.
It's short and simple and really says everything you want to say.

Years ago a friend sent me a sympathy card when my father died. On the inside she just wrote--"So Sorry". Somehow that has always stuck with me more than lots of words.

Here are two that I usually print on my computer when I need to send a Sympathy card.
The tide recedes but leaves behindbright seashells on the sand,The sun goes down but gentle warmthstill lingers on the land,The music stops and yet it echoes onin sweet refrains...For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains
"Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy."
Eskimo saying
(the second is also attributed to being a [native] American saying and is available as a stamp --- I don't own it so cannot tell you who makes it.)
Sorry that you have need of such sentiments.

This is the only I can find ... I hope it is helpful to you and your friend.
What Cancer Cannot Do
Cancer is SO limited.
It CANNOT Cripple Love
It CANNOT shatter hope
It CANNOT Corrode Faith
It CANNOT Eat Away Peace
It CANNOT Destroy Confidence
It CANNOT Kill Friendship
It CANNOT Shut Out Memories
It CANNOT Silence Courage
It CANNOT Invade the Soul
It CANNOT Reduce Eternal Life
It CANNOT Quench the Spirit

I usually do not put a verse, but hand write:
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
It's not much, but it is the truth. It works for sympathy or for seriously ill.

Writing notes of sympathy can be so challenging. But, I've found that honest words work better than old cliches.
Try some of these -- if they fit your situation:
Keeping you in our prayers, and trusting that God will bring you comfort in the days ahead.
Know that the Lord has welcomed your loved one into His home in Heaven. In Warmest Sympathy.
May each new day ease the burden of your sorrow.
May it bring you solace to know how many lives have been deeply touched by your {loved one}.
Wishing you the peace of knowing that this life is not the end. In Faith and Sympathy.

Thanks Christine for recommending the sentiment list. I was going to do the same thing. I have a beautiful baby sympathy that one of the SCSer's gave me and I cry every time I read it. But I digress....If you guys don't mind I will copy those I don't have onto the list. Please let me know if you rather not have your sentiment listed. THanks so much.

the road we're on is twisted Lord,
the end defies the view.
Teach us to take each step in faith
And leave the rest to You.

It will be the little things you
remember, the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter. And
although it may seem hard
right now, it will be the memories
of these little things that help
push away the pain and bring
the smiles back again.
With Sincere Sympathy
*******
Remembering with you...
the life of someone so dear.
With Deepest Sympathy
*******
Sharing your sadness.
Gone from our sight,
but never our memories.
Gone from our touch,
but never our hearts.
With Sympathy

sympathy verse
The one that I go back to time and again for sympathy cards is the one that is a quote by (excuse the spelling) Caesar Pavese. We do not remember days we remember moments, or something close to that. I am at work (don't tell!) and cannot remember the exact words.

I have used this poem on several occasions, but I don't know its origin.
Do not stand by my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the soft refreshing rain.
When you awake in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die.
Sorry for your loss,I hope this verse helps.

I've had a difficult week and had to make three sympathy cards. I used the verse below which I find really comforting. Hope this helps.
May hope sustain you,
Friends surround you,
And love give you strength.

Here is a simple OLC (one layer card) I keep on hand for encouragement needs:
http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...82636?cat=4632
I use the computer to print inside Isaiah 43:2-3 *When you pass through the waters, I will be with you...* on the left, and *thoughts and prayers are with you today...* on the right side. It works for sickness, sympathy, hard times, etc.

I know this is really too late for now, but I wanted to share this poem. It has always meant a lot to me.
The Rose Still Grows Beyond The Wall
Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
Budded and blossomed in God's free light:
Watered and fed by morning dew,
Shedding its sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
Slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
Through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength
With never a thought of fear or pride,
It followed the light through the crevice length,
And unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
Were found the same as they were before.
And it lost itself in beauties new.
Breathing its fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
And make our courage faint or fall?
Nay, let us faith and hope receive,
The rose still grows beyond the wall.
Scattering fragrance far and wide,
Just as it did in days of yore.
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will forevermore.
