Default Need help with garage sale finds

While shopping at garage sales my DH (he's a keeper) bought me 8 sets of SU stamps. They are older sets most from 2003 and they haven't been well loved. They have a gray/white filmy residue on them. Which does affect the stamping. What should I use to clean them and possibly recondition them? I don't have SU stamp cleaner.
Thanks

Um, maybe try rubbing them with an eraser? I've never seen a gray/white residue on stamps before............

I'd gently wash them with soap and water to see if that gets the film off them.

I've gotten awful junk off garage sale stamps with Avon skin so soft, and then wash the residue off with soap and water. The rubber seems to take the treatment just fine. I use old toothbrushes, and qtips and even toothpicks for the crevices.

Wonder if that gray/white residue is from white craft ink? My stamps look like your description if I've been stamping with white craft and don't get them totally clean.

Another vote for Ultra Clean!

Here is a third vote for Ultra Clean. It has cleaned stamps our daughter used and never cleaned over 20 years ago, and conditioned them enough to make them usable. I never believed all the raves about Ultra Clean until I bought it.

Spray some Simple Green on them and let it sit for a sec...They'll be good as new!

I vote for Ultra Clean but try soap and water first and maybe some Goo Gone.

Ultra Clean is a stamp cleaner from Hero Arts stamps. You can find it at some craft stores and through the Hero Arts retail site as well as other online retailers. I sell it through my site but I don't keep stock on hand so if you need it right away it would be better to try your local craft stores first. If you check the Hero Arts website they have a retailer look up option so you can see who in your area carries their products.

Would glycerin work and a soft wash in baby bath?

Great advice being offered for cleaning! I'm dying to know which sets you got? How cool that your DH found them for you! My DH will bring crafty stuff home too.

I think they need conditioning, Ultra Clean has a conditioner in it, I think!

Thanks for all your suggestions. Some of the stamps were: what's brewing, I like your style, funky favorites, the other sets aren't named and I'll have to look them up. I have to say my DH is my enabler, but he really thought he had done something wonderful and he had.

Don't use Goo Gone! It says not to use on rubber, and it will eventually make your rubber brittle.

I like what everyone has said. Mostly what you need is to clean the stamps first. Simple Green is a tremendous cleaner for tough stuff and it is available in your local stores. I find it in the automotive section and the cleaning section of my local grocery stores or Walmart or similar. Ultra Clean also works wonderfully and is available at many online stamping stores.

Personally, if I was in your shoes with 8 new and dirty sets, I would use my Simple Green to clean the sets up first. It costs less than Ultra Clean and I wouldn't feel so bad about really spraying it on and toothbrush scrubbing. I would rinse well when I was all done and then clean with Ultra Clean or SU cleaner, so that the rubber would be conditioned.

There is also a recipe here on this thread:
Forums at Splitcoaststampers
for homemade stamp cleaners, and other pertinent discussion.
