Default Must Visit Stores in Chicago Area or on the Way

Hi friends. I'm driving my daughter to Chicago on July 15 (6 hours one way) as she's flying back to NY to visit some friends. I drive her all the way up there because she's only 15 and I just want her to be on a nonstop flight.

Anyhow, I've never been to Chicago or have driven there before. I haven't put the destination into my On-Star yet, so I'm not sure what towns I'll be driving though, but I definitely want to know of some super stores that have great crafting supplies. All suggestions are more than welcome.

We only have a HL and Michael's down here and I live in a pretty small town of about 55,000 people.

Also, if there's any must eat at restaurants, I'd like to know those too. I plan on doing a bit of sightseeing while I'm there also.

Thank you for any help. I really appreciate it. Have a great day.

Is she flying from O'Hare or Midway airport? Are you staying overnight?
There are a few other stores in the Chicago suburbs, but Stampology is closest to O'Hare.
Stamp On In is located in Chicago near Lincoln Park.
The Cottage Stamper is in St Charles. The owners are very nice.
Stamp Thyme is in Lockport. They weren't very friendly (okay they were kind of surly!) when I was there, but maybe it was just a fluke.
Craft Fancy just opened in Arlington Heights. I plan on checking it out as soon as I get a free weekend!

For the big box stores, you can check the store locators on the web sites for the Joann Superstores or Archivers.

Windy City Scrapbooking is a great store and they carry quite a few clear stamps and different inks.

Stampology rules! If you're able, take a class on Tuesday or Thursday evening. $25...you get dinner and make four cards. The staff is fabulous. You'll have a great time. It's a small store that's jam packed with goodies!

Well on a History note - you route probably wouldn't be too far from Springfield Illinois and with it being Lincoln's Bicentennial etc.

Thanks everyone for this thread - I need to save it for the next time my favourite Band from the UK come over because they normally play Chicago!

Depending on which airport (Midway or O'Hare) you might want to stop in at an Archiver's. The one in Orland Park would probably be more convenient if you are going to Midway. Depending on how long you are staying or how far you want to travel, there is a really nice store, Memories and Beyond, in Downers Grove, IL. They have crop nights on the weekend that are very reasonably priced as well. There are plenty of Joanne's and Michaels and a few Hobby Lobby's as well. Enjoy your trip!

I recently visited Chicago and went to Stampology and Stamp On In. Both are worth a visit.

Stampology: Very nice people! They talked to me and were very friendly. They were getting ready for a class and had had a cancellation and offered it to me. I wish I could have, but I was on a time table and couldn't stay.

Stamp On In: The gentleman that was there, while nice, wasn't very talkative.

As far as selection, maybe I'm just spoiled, but I didn't feel that either store had a lot. I did manage to spend money at both stores but compared to other stores that I've been to, they were both dissapointing as far as the size of the stores, the amount of stamps, and usage of their square footage. Of course, in retrospect, this was a good thing because I really didn't have a whole lot to spend like I normally do.

I would go back to either store when I go to Chicago again.

Stampology is great! Awesome store and staff. Small store with alot of personality. I just found this store, and they offer alot of handmade papers, and tools.
