I know many of you have husbands in the military, and I'm hoping that you could help me. I'm looking at the Highly Decorated jumbo wheel in the summer mini. Although my grandfather was in the military for years, he rarely spoke about his service. He was in the Navy during WWII and went to the Air Force after the war. I am pretty naive about the different awards, pins, and ranks, for that matter. Can anyone describe to me what the different medals in the roller are for? I know the second one is for good conduct- he had that medal. I would love to know the background of the medals before I include them in my scrapbook, if appropriate. Thank you so much!
My demo has identified them all - she is supposed to be back from vacation today - and deliver my catty. I'll mention this to her.

Why did she make things? Well, she enjoyed it, of course; it also somehow helped her remember who she was and where she came from.
My hubby was annoyed because they mixed the branches in the wheel... as I recall he said they were mainly army with 1 airforce metal. Was so bum-ed out casue he said he didn't want it for his album cause it had the wrong branch in it!

Sounds like SU seriously under estimated the amount of pride military people feel for their branch. My DH is retired Navy and I can tell you without asking that he wouldn't want images from any of the other branches in a scrapbook or on a card for him. He would look at me like I was half crazy for even suggesting it! He doesn't even like to get lumped in with the "regular" Navy, he was in the Submarine Service, don't ya' know! LOL Oh well, maybe the pride is part of what makes them able to stick with the job.
I looked them up and best I could tell - left to right - they look to me like-
Navy Cross
Prisoner of War - People are saying National Defense Service medal but if you compare the two, the stripes on the ribbon part of the medal look like the POW medal to me.
I can ask my hubby when he gets home. He will be ticked off too about the mixed up stuff. Drives him crazy in movies etc. I am glad to know before I purchased it!
OK, here's a list - I can't take credit for it. It was on the demo boards back when the summer mini first came out. Also listed are websites where you can check to make sure they are correct. Again, not my work, I'm just passing on the info.

you can go to the links to see the colors, etc....
Wow! Thank you for the links. I will definitely check them out- not just for the wheel, but for background info as I do scrapbook my grandpa's time in the service.
BTW- My uncle recently retired from the Army and had been stationed in Okinawa for several years at two different times. In fact, my aunt set up pen pals with a class there for my fifth graders to write to. My aunt and uncle had their first son there twenty something years ago. Now the son is stationed in... Okinawa!

My brother thinks that the ranks are all messed up on the scrapbook page in the mini catalog. He just left to go back to Ft. Polk, LA last week. :(

LOL, because the title says "Lt Cude" - officer....
the guy's wearing an enlisted chevron on his cover in the picture where he's in cammies, and looks like Lt bars on his shoulder in dress uniform. That could be the reason for the confusion - can anyone read what the journaling says?? At first I was thinking it was all wrong too, but maybe he is prior enlisted and just became an officer? It happens in all branches, and because of his age, looks like that might be it. Think of this as "before" and "after" pictures?

The journaling says "We are all so proud of our Lieutenant Cude and his service to our great country! While we worry about him as he travels from place to place, fulfilling his duty, we know that what he and other American soldiers are doing is both right and honorable. God bless America!"
I took a real good look at the dress uniform, and it looks like Captain's bars, not Lt bars! I'm going to ask my husband what he thinks when he comes home. The timeline seems a little strange to me if he went green to gold...why is he in desert cammies? He couldn't have gone green to gold that fast, all the way to 03 since the guys have been wearing desert cammies? I'll post again after Marcus looks at it.... Now you've got me all puzzled Karen!!!!
