AMEN! It's amazing the level of creative problem solving that goes into criminal activity.
I agree that M's did good in sending the email. It's a good reminder to us all to be more careful!

I went into Michaels today and the PIN Pads are gone from there too! I am thinking they want to put some security measures into place so this doesn't happen again. I didn't buy anything....but had cash if I found something I really wanted.

In the Chicago area, we are hearing it involved 5 different stores. I am in a small ATC group (! 15 of us) and one of the members did use her debit card and had a small balance ~ $300 in her account removed- the theif left her $30.00- how nice..... She was told by the bank it was going to take about 10 business days to get the $$$ returned to her account.
We were told it was debit AND Credit cards- so it was not simply a PIN issue. We are hearing rumors that Walgreens stores here may have also been affected- BUT that is Rumor until we hear otherwise....... If I hear that confirmed, I will drop back and leave a message.....

They got my info, my bank called me before anything was said in the paper or news. Had to cancel my cards, what a headache. I will be using cash from now on.

As somene who had their info pinched about 18 months ago you have my heartfelt sympathy. I'm back to using my cards a bit - but I still stick to mostly cash. It will take some getting used to but the peace of mind is priceless (and you might even find you spend less too).
I hope you get your funds back quickly.

Same thing just happened to me. They stole over $300 from our account. Then they tried an additional $2700!!!! Thank goodness our bank declined it. I too am going to be using cash more often. What a horrible situation.

There are TONS more Michaels stores affected way outside Chicago. There are 4 in Northern VA that were hit, but fortunately for me, I haven't shopped at any of those in over a year.
I did have someone hack my cc last month but only got $50 in Fandango GC before I caught it. There are some really crummy people in this world.
ETA: Here's a list I found of affected stores:
Michaels said its screening of store PIN pads was "preliminary," and noted tampered pads were found in just 1 percent of its 964 stores.

It's not just the Chicago area. This morning HLN news said that several states are affected. The state I shop in was not affected. I'm sure there is a link somewhere that shows the states.
Great post babydal57 with all the stores!

Michael's doesn't have my state listed yet. If you live in a state not listed, you should still be on alert and check your bank activity.
I'm going to cancel my card on my other account that I used at Michael's. I'm not taking any chances!!

Thanks! That worked. Luckily, my Michaels is not on the list. I did see they removed their pin pads now. I sure hope we hear more about how it was done so we know what to look for in the future!

I was curious about that too. They may not want to give anyone ideas, but I sure do wonder how someone hacked a pin pad during store hours...

Me too....I used to think we should give anybody any ideas, but the bad guys already have the bad ideas, so I think we good guys need to know what to look for!

My credit union just called me to tell me they had received a compromised list from Michael's and said they were canceling my debit card and would issue a new one. This is a serious warning. It is good to know that Michael's is on top of it. I hope no one has their account hacked.
