I've noticed that two of my SU inkpads have developed an odd residue on their surface; it has a metallic patina to it. One is my Bravo Burgunday, and most recently Real Red. My Real Red used to be ultra juicy...I just loved working with it, and now you can almost see a stain covering most of the pad. They aren't new. I notice it seems to almost seal the ink in. I cannot get a good impression with my real red pad, and when I apply pressure, it seems as though the ink is sealed in, and comes out of the pad in little holes. This was odd when it happened to my Bravo Burgundy, but I don't use it that often, but now my Real Red??? Has this ever happened to you? Is there anything I can do about it?
I also had it happen to my bravo burgundy. I don't use it that often, I bought maybe two years ago and probably hadn't used it in over a year. About a month ago I opened it and noticed the goldish residue, which sucks because I'll be using bravo burgundy on my Christmas cards this year and I really don't want to have to order another one. I wonder if adding more from a refill bottle would help?
I did try adding ink, but it seems as though whatever film is on the surface is sealing the ink in. It takes the ink, but doesn't seem to make any difference in the stamp pad.
Hmmm, yours must be worse then mine. I can still get enough out to use it but I have to press pretty hard and when you're planning on making about 100 cards, you really don't want to have to press that hard, KWIM?
I have the same problem with my Bravo Burgundy. It doesn't do any good re-inking mine either. I may try to wash it out, then re-ink it. I posted about it in the demo forums, and several others were having that problem too, most with Burgundy and some with Real Red. My Red still looks perfect though, and I've had them both for probably 2 years or so. I'm just going to buy an new Burgundy. I haven't called SU about it since I seriously doubt if they'd replace something so old, but I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to call and make sure they are aware of the problem.
ETA: I just noticed your a demo. The thread I mentioned is HERE if your interested.
So far so good. Phew! Thanks for the heads up. Sure would be nice if SU was aware and offered those defected ones a replacement. Sounds like good customer relations to me.

I think it is just metallic pigment that is part of the ink. I have had this on my Bravo Burgundy pad, and it does not affect the stamped image at all.
Well it does affect my stamped image and the op's. Maybe yours isn't as bad yet? I had thought about calling SU to ask about the problem but I figured it was so long ago that I bought it...
I read through the whole thread linked above (since anyone not a demo can't read it). The consensus seemed to be that as long as your pad is well-inked, the gold doesn't seem to affect the stamped image. One poster said she wiped the gold off with a paper towel.
I scraped off as much of the gold stuff as I could, but it seems to thicken the ink, and acts like a sealant on the pad itself. I could get a fairly good image after scraping it off, but it was a real mess, and it didn't all come off. I'm sure some of it got pushed right into the pad.
I'm shocked at how many people have this problem, and with the same two pads! There is a couple of threads in the demo forum, but it doesn't seem like any one is calling SU. I am!
My Bravo Burgandy pad isn't as bad...that is the residue isn't sealing in the ink as it is doing on my Real Red pad. However, if this is a wide spread problem, SU needs to know so they can fix it. My Bravo Burgandy pad is as old as the colour...3 yrs? My Real Red pad is a year old...I replaced it just last year since my old pad was really caved in, and it's one I use a lot.
I hope you will all consider contacting SU. I'm not sure they'll replace the pad, although I hope the will since I'm mostly a hobby demo, and won't be placing another order for a couple of months. I still think they need to know that this is happening frequently, regardless of use.
Use Staz-On cleaner or another solvent cleaner. It will take that residue off your stamps in no time. I think( at least in my case) the faster i scrub the more residue I get. This is just my experience, yours may be different.

They're talking about residue on the ink pads, not the stamps.
I remember that other conversation about the Bravo Burgundy pad -- interestingly, nothing like that has happened to mine even though it came from the same lot number as most of the problem pads.

My Real Red pad developed this recently also. I tried scraping the stuff off but that didn't help. If I stamped with it, the ink didn't really dry on the paper and would smear. Maybe I should have called SU but I threw the pad away and will just get another one.
I haven't seen this on any of mine, but DEFINITELY contact Stampin' Up. I know, the 90-day warranty period is past, but still, if they don't hear from all of you, how will they even know it's a problem, let alone a widespread problem?? Call them. Have your demo call them, too. They can't do anything about it if they haven't heard about it.
I noticed that my Bravo Burgandy is metallic also and it does not ink up my stamps very well. I thought maybe I had accidently put some gold on my pad when I was making a polished stone card. I guess I should go check my red also!!
I noticed this on a black SU pad that someone gave me. It was the really old style, before they had the flip-top lids. I decided to use my Staz-on pad exclusively because SU black is too purplish, but I don't remember the metallic stuff affecting my stamped image.
I just tried rinsing mine out before ordering another. Then I just left it open for a day so it would dry then reinked it. It worked perfectly. My ink pad is just like new now .
I did try adding ink, but it seems as though whatever film is on the surface is sealing the ink in. It takes the ink, but doesn't seem to make any difference in the stamp pad.
too funny, i just showed this problem to my demo, we didn't know what to think, i will send her this thread. also, the extra ink didn't help mine either. it's just funny these happened all at the same time.
I don,t this will help anyone but may answer some of your questions about the ink/ I work in the Art field and red and burgandy paints are made with gold pigments in them ,its the only colors that require the gold for the richer colors. So I,m sure thats what is showing up on the pads. Not much you can do about it ,just part of the makeup of paint, but at least you know why now !!

In almost 10 years as a demo, I've only had this happen once....and it's just recently.....to my Real Red pad. Luckily, I have more than one of them. Kept reinking it from time to time, but I don't always grab that pad.
It's worth asking Stampin' Up! for a new one if it's been a reasonable amount of time, but I'm sure I've had that pad at a couple years. While that's not wonderful, I'm just glad I now know not to keep inking it.
I'm so relieved.....I thought it was my imagination!!! My Bravo Burgundy Stampin' Spot also has a shiny film, but still works as long as it's juicy. Since I only use the Spots when I go out, it's not too much of a bother. Have not seen this on the Real Red pad or Spot.
My real red also has this patina to it, but it hasn't seemed to affect its functionality. I think it should be reported with perhaps a link to this thread, so SU gets a heads up and can investigate.
My real red ink pad did the yucky thing, too! I called SU demo support and they were wonderful. I wish I could remember her name, but she took time to ask others about this ink pad situation, called tech people, and offered to replace the ink pad but I would have to pay postage since it was longer than 90 days. Then she called me back because she was thinking about my problem and realized that I would be paying more in postage ( 7.95, i think) and suggested it would cost me less to order the ink pad myself. so thats what I did. I'm going to try to clean the stamp pad and re-ink it to see what happens. I don't mind buying another red ink pad because i use red a lot.
have a blessed day! Sandy`
I called demo support on this issue a few weeks ago, and the person helping me did a search to see if there had been any other complaints similar to mine. She didn't find any! We had a long discussion regarding it, and the gist of it was that SU! can't do anything about it if we are not calling them and letting them know this is going on. I urge all of you to call them. They can then open a case and research the issue. If you know when you purchased the ink pad, or even better, have an order #, that would be extremely helpful for them. I am also sending my inkpad back to them with that information. The address I was given to send it back is:
Stampin' Up
Attn Resolutions

They are very willing to look into it, but they have to get enough complaints to open a case. She also told me to email the link to this thread to them, so they could read about it. Who knows, maybe that color needs to be reformulated. Just don't scrape the metallic residue off like I did, because that alters the color LOL. She recommended using the back of a spoon to rub it back into the pad to try to remix the pigments.
Call your demo and have her get you replacements. I just did this for a customer last week and it was past the 90 days. They are aware of the problem and they want to fix it--give them the chance!

It's good to hear they are now acknowledging it's a problem--that means people are calling it in! When I spoke to them a couple of weeks ago, they were clueless! I definitely think they will try to fix it. If you haven't already called it in, do it :-D
I have a real red pad that has done that as well. I convinced myself that it was a product of my 5 year old *LOL*
