I'm posting here so I don't cry or kill my children

Okay so I wouldn't really kill them but wait until you hear this one. My girls were goofing around (after I asked them repeatedly to calm down) and spilled a glass of milk. It was completely full and the entire thing spilled in the floor and started draining into the air vent...you know where this is going right...guess what is directly below that vent...yep my paper rack. I really do feel like crying. All of my stash of In Colors, this year and last, wet with milk, plus all of my brushed silver, gold and copper. I am hoping I can cut some of the sheets in half and still use them but milk stinks when it dries and I don't want stinky cards. I feel like I could get sick and no one in my house understands my misery. I figured someone here may be able to commiserate. It's a good thing they are really cute right about now.

Wow so sorry that happened but it would be a good idea to change where your paper rack is.

Oh, I do feel for you. It's "your stuff" and you love it. Other people would think, 'it's just paper'. But remember, it really is 'just paper'. You can replace it; you will have a funny story to tell your kids and friends when you stop feeling so mad/bad. And they didn't mean to do this...I know you realize that. Keep it all in perspective. And I just can't resist! Don't cry over spilt milk! Sorry! I couldn't help myself!

Yikes! That's a small fortune in paper. You certainly have my sympathy. I'd be beside myself if that happened to me.

The only thing I could say when I read this was "Oh, no!!" in a very sympathetic tone!!!

That's SO sad. I was my at my 3 y.o. DD when she mucked up just ONE of my SU CS pieces! I can't imagine how ticked you must have been.

So sorry... hope your day gets better!!

"Spilt milk" that actually made me laugh out loud!

The sad part is it wouldn't make a difference where I put the racks, it would always be under a vent or pipes or by a window. The basement isn't finished so it's a crap shoot down there.

About ten minutes after I got the mess cleaned up my six year old gave me a hug and said she was sorry she messed up my special paper. But she is missing six teeth so it was more like "thary I methed up your thpethal paper mom" which made me laugh. I know it's just paper I am just sick at the thought of how much money in paper it is. I'm not a big business girl so that $100 - $150 really hurts, especially when I want so much from the new catalog.

so sorry! Hope you get everything cleaned up - I can imagine the smell of old milk going through the air vents - yucky! Sorry too about the 'lost' paper! What a bummer! At least you can replace most of it!

Oh honey do I feel your pain!

I've got 4 little ones (ok, 11 & 9 isn't so little anymore--but 5 and 3 is!) and cannot even imagine what I would've done if this had happened here at my house. As my dad would say, "Heads are gonna roll!!!"

A few years back my then 3 yo DS came in to my room and saw my rubber-cutting scissors and my yet-to-be-mounted stamp sets sitting on my bed. Yeah, you know exactly what happens from here. Trust me...lesson learned!!

I am so, so, SO sorry this happened!!!

I'm really sorry about that and I would have been furious too but it's hard to stay mad when she gave you a sweet apology.

I think that after seeing you so angry hopefully it won't happen again. I understand that it's only paper but it's really expensive paper and that hurts.

Just this morning I was making up a list of things I would like to order from the SU catty for February and just my paper came to over $150.00.

Oh I'm so sorry. My kid drives me nuts sometimes too with all that she destroys but you can only stay mad for so long. Recently my friends oldest died in a car accident and you know, it's much worse without them. It's paper, fun and of monetary worth but still, just paper.

I totally feel your pain! though not stamp related, I found my ds ages 7 and 5 "water skating" in an inch of water in my kitchen on my BRAND NEW laminate floors!! needless to say, that was the first time in 11 years of marriage that my husband actually had to COME HOME FROM WORK to make sure that his kids were ok!!! they were and so was I but for a split second, there could have been problems!!!!

That's just about as good as the time DH was watching DS while I was closed of for a scrap session. We had just moved into a new house and I finally had my own room. DH decided to wash dishes, 3yo decided strawberry milk in squirt guns was a great idea. Then proceeded to shoot up and down all the walls. DH didn't see the comedy I saw in the situation.

Gee, it could be hard to stay mad after a cute apology like this, especially with all the lisping because of no teeth. I know I would melt, but it wasn't my paper! Obviously she knew how upset her mommy was because her 'special paper' got ruined. Hope you are feeling better. And glad you got a laugh over "spilt milk".

First of all, I am so sorry for your loss.

Here's a thought you might consider, to try to make the best of a bad situation:

Save some of the damaged paper and make a 'little stinkers' scrapbook to commemorate the naughty things your kids do (and will do). Since it's a book of naughtiness (and it's kinda stinky), keep it on a shelf in the garage.

When they're starting to get out of line, say 'I'm not going to have to get the Little Stinkers album down, am I? (At that point, they most likely will settle down or demand to see the album--which would at least get them to sit down.)

Tell them that, lucky for them, it won't get passed down through generations of their families because it will self-destruct. But not before you show it to their fiance some day.

Then laugh a half-crazed laugh.

(Hey, you might as well get some mileage out of it, so your paper doesn't die in vain. . . . )

Oh wow. I'm so sorry. Thats probably one of the worst things that could happen to a stamper. At least she gave you a really cute apology though. I hope you get your paper replaced soon.

I think it's a fantastic idea. I'd have the disinfectant out too, that's the sort of smell that lingers on and on.

Have you thought of recycling the paper and making your own paper? I'm not sure how it works but I have seen handmade paper kits where it looks like you shred old paper (in a blender??) and pour onto some screen to drain and dry. I know nothing about the process but perhaps you will be able to salvage at least some of it.

Wow!! I really feel your pain. I've had some stuff ruined by my kids. At least you have the consolation that they didn't do it on purpose. I remember a post on here a few years back about a woman who normally kept her stamping room locked. Her hubby left on a trip or something and when he went in to get something out, he left the door unlocked. She woke up to her little kids in her room amidst opened jars of embossing powder, eyelets, microbeads, glue, and more.

I don't know who said it, but I fall back on this a lot as a mom of a now 7 & 10yo.

"If you're going to laugh about it later, save the stress and laugh about it now."

I hope you are able to salvage some of it. I know time and that apology will help.

Here's my unsolicited piece of advice...next time it happens, do the same thing and come here to vent. Make sure you look at your avatar first. As I read your post, I looked at your avatar, and saw 2 little angels.

Hugs to you

I can totally sympathize with you. About two years ago my husband left the living room window unlocked - so when it rained REALLY hard for like 2 days straight, I found my basement flooded (who knew water could seep through an unlocked window?) My entire craft table was right under that living room window and it was covered in water. Just about my entire PaperCraft, Rubber Stamper magazines & old SU catalogs were ruined along with a ton of my paper that was on top of my desk (oh, and about two dozen cards too). PLUS, one basket full of grosgrain ribbon was soaked and I had to unravel it and put it in the dryer (which sort of worked...some survived, some didn't).

We still refer to that as 'the Sullivan Flood 2006".

So sorry this happened to you. Perhaps you can salvage some it by rinsing it with water to get the stinky milk out, letting it dry, and then using a crimper on it so that it can be background paper? Or simply crumpling the "compromised" paper instead of crimping for backgrounds?

Good luck!

If you foresee something like this happening again with the vents, you could sew vinyl "dust covers" for your racks to give the paper some protection......

thompsj, ouch. I have a very sweet 11 yr old thank goodness. He has never done anything like that. He's had his own computer since he was 3 so that was probably the reason why he leaves my stuff alone. Now he has the xbox360, his own computer and plays with my toys, loves the Cricut, lol, but he is old enough to use gently.

Tami, hard to stay mad at cute kids. Is there anyway that you can move your paper stash to an upstairs room. I would be so worried about it in an unfinished basement, pipes at our place are always leaking. 150.00 is a lot of money, but you can't replace the love your kids give you when you forgive them.
