Default I'm CASEing you! (long)

Hello from a lurker...
I love reading everything in the various forums, so interesting! It helps to fill in the time when I can't seem to get downstairs to "create".
So, here's my worry. I've been reading about the CASEing of cards and would like to make a few comments. Once a technique is learned from a card that inspires me I use my own selection of stamps,
paper, punches and embellishments to create a new card...and that's what it is... new...to me. I don't consider it cased, copied or even imitated. So those who feel that their cards are CASE'd and don't want to upload them because of using a specific technique should consider that there are few cards that don't fit under that definition of CASE'd. I wish the whole term CASE'd would go away. Other cards INSPIRE me. Maybe we should call CASE'd INSPIRE'd

I completely agree!!
I like a technique or a layout and try to incorporate that in my own way.
It's just my own personal take on making things. I want my cards/creations to be my own - somewhat unique.

I will say that after being on this site for about a month now that EVERYONE is so friendly and willing to share. I've asked for patterns and gotten answers very quickly.
I think if someone doesn't want something CASED then it's probalby not out there to see.

Glad you came out of "lurkdom" to share this thought!

I probably missed the topic you're specifically referring to, but my thoughts on CASEing are like this:

Sometimes I actually CASE...I really take every little step and exactly copy a card. I figure that if I'm creating the exact card to send to someone else as a "how ya' doin'" from me to them, I should feel OK about CASEing liberally...that's one of the main reasons this site was created, I'm guessing, to feed SU ideas to those of us less gifted in the creativity department!

There are times, however, when I would not CASE without specific permission from the original creator...if I wanted to use the card to demo (and I would tell my customers where I got the idea); if I wanted to sell the card at a bazaar or craft show (I would name the designer on the back, if that person wished); or if I recreated it for this site, in which case I would list it on the title that I had CASEd and from whom, and probably list the link as well. Oh, yeah, or if I sent it to another SCS as a RAK.

But then I need to specify that I am actually CASEing.

I also view the term CASE as a point of flattery for stampers and scrappers. I'm flattered when someone else says they CASEd me!!

I think the "inspired" is understood! That's why we're here! To inspire others and to receive inspiration. I, personally, do more receiving, but hey....

If a replication is not immediately recognizable, it's probably not necessary to say exactly where the idea came from; heck, many of us may not be able to remember!! Again, the purpose of this site is for idea sharing, so those who are really concerned about "CASEing" should be careful about what they post! (My opinion, I realize.)

If it's easy to determine from whom you received you're inspiration, then to state "this card inspired by..." is good form. If it's almost an exact replica, then definitely one should say that it is CASEd.

Who knew I had so much to say about that? How often did I repeat myself??

I agree with Ronda. Sometimes I flat out copy a card because I love it so. Sometimes I just feel inspired.

I've been CASEd a few times and must agree...there is no higher form of flattery than when another person CASEs your card.

I agree to, but there have been times where I post my items becuase I am proud of myself becuase it came out great, but than later while rummiging through the gallery I spot something exactly like mine, knowing I didn't CASE anyone I wonder was it there before mine? Was it CASED? or do great minds think alike? At this point, I am not sure it matters unless someone is flat out copying than trying to pawn it off as theirs, I really think the whole thing has been blown out of proportion, sorry if that ruffles any feathers becuase I don't mean to, but I feel thats what being part of a community like this is about, SHARING ideas, it should be flattery that you are being copied, not a reason to start war.

Mys40, I like your sentiment. We are inspired for sure by cards on this site.

I have a new definition - forget CASE, now INSPIRE

I - I
N - noted
S - special
P - parts,
I - I
R - rearranged
E - everything!

I think the new INSPIRE'd definition is absolutely brilliant. It expresses the idea perfectly. You're either INSPIRE'd or you copied it!!

Rather than CASE'd, if you exactly copied the idea, my upline calls it R & D - robbed and duplicated. Meaning, you robbed the idea and copied it exactly, yet giving credit to the creator.

So I like the terms Inspired and R & D'd!

Anything I put on this site is free for the CASE-ing, as far as I'm concerned. I have had people nicely ask permission a couple times, and I said, "Go for it!" Unless someone submits it to a magazine, SU!, etc, and claims it as their own, I have no problem with CASE-ing. Like was mentioned before, it's flattering. (The only time I was a bit upset was when someone uploaded the EXACT pic from my SCS gallery and posted it on another stamping site without credit to me.)
I use the gallery for inspiration (I like "INSPIRE," too!...very clever ), but sometimes I out and out CASE...mostly quick cards. I would never sell these or claim them as my own design. And I always ask permission to reprint original technique lists or directions if there is a copyright listed with the author's name. I have never been denied, and am always thanked for asking.
It's all about respect....a healthy balance of sharing and giving credit where credit is due!

Just a thought: To whom are we going to give credit for the techniques we are all using. Someone had to think up the original.

When I make an exact copy of a card, I then give the credit to that person if I know it. Actually, when I use someone elses card idea, just change the colours around, or rearrange the stamped images I indicate that on the back of the card by something liike "inspired by JanTInk's xxxx card". However, I've never yet used anyone elses card idea to do in a swap, and have yet to enter a contest so no comment there.

I expect that anything posted here (including anything I post myself) is free reign to be copied. However, I tend to expect that it will be copied for personal use, ie. to send to someone, to use in a workshop or class, to make for a set sampler, etc. Things like sending it in for a contest or making for a swap at an SU meeting just doesn't seem right to me. Similar idea but with changes... sure. Exactly copied? No. My direct upline had a card posted on the Stampers Showcase. (kudos to her even though I personally didn't like the card. ) I couldn't believe it when someone else not only CASE'd it but traded them at Convention this year! My "sister" demo (same upline) was someone that this person tried to trade with. The demo recognized it and had a few comments about the audacity and integrity of the CASE'r which she had no problem addressing directly to the copier's face. I don't think I would have handled it quite as she did, but I certainly agreed with her opinion of the situation.

I have a friend that says she lovingly lifted an idea.....not cased and I really like that term because it basically says that you really loved the idea enough to copy it. BUT let me state that she always tells everyone where she gets an idea if it is not her own.... you must give credit where credit is due.

This is just my opinion.....Take it as you may.
