If you could only buy one...
If you could only buy one color from each color family what would it be?
I am trying to decide which colors to buy, without buying an assorted pack. I just don't know which ones will be the most versitile for me. So what do you think?
Pick only one color from EACH color family, based on what you think is the MOST VERSITILE.
Becky
btw--my all time fave color is close to cocoa. I use it every chance I get. I don't have an opinion yet about the other families...which is why I need the help.

If you are going to limit yourself, you want them all to work together, therefore I would look to the color coach to tell me what goes with Close to Cocoa:
So in Soft Subtles it would be Barely Banana or Sage Shadow
For BB they list Pixie Pink
the RR has a combo with Bordering Blue
so thats what I would pick.

It's not so much that I want something to go with close to cocoa, I just want to know what it is that you find that YOU use the most. What is versitile for any type of card...that kind of thing. I have plenty of assorted paper, I just tend to grab for my close to cocoa, cause I can do anything with it. I also tend to lean towards EE in general, and would like to branch out...

OK I know you said you didn't want to buy an assortment pack, but I really think it's the BEST way to find out what colors YOU use those most. I have done this and the papers have lasted me a very long time. I am now on my second batch of assortment packs and am slowly collecting the full packs as I run low of each color.
So, so far I have bought, Certainly Celery, So Saffron, Real Red (not very versitile, but I needed it for a gift), and am getting Bashful Blue and Chocolate Chip next.
But to answer your question:
EE - Ruby Red
RR - So Saffron
SS - Bashful Blue
BB - Green Galore or Pixie Pink

I agree with laurakj. An assorted pack is the best way to figure out what you'll use the most. In general I use whisper white, black, and vanilla alot. Right now I am also using Bashful blue and any colors that go with the Spring Flowers/Showers designer papers.

Okay, so what about odd color combinations. What have you put together that didn't seem like it would go, but then the colors were just fabulous together.

Sounds like you really need to invest in a color wheel. It will be the best $10 you ever spent.

My most used colors from each family are:
BB - Pixie Pink or Gable Green (none of the other colors ever seem to "fit" with the kind of cards I like to make)
EE - Ruby Red (but I also love all the browns and every other EE for that matter)
RR - So Saffron (I cannot get enough of this color)
SS - Certainly Celery! (although I love banana, pink and blue here too)

My most used colors are: (but not necessarily together)
RR-Night of Navy
SS-Bashful Blue
BB-Real Red
EE-chocolate chip
As far as unusual colors combos are concerned, a couple weeks ago I put together a scrapbook page in Taken with Teal, Lovely Lilac, and Rose Red. It was of my son's 7th birthday party and these were colors that I pulled out from the backgrounds in the photos. When this page was done, I really liked how the colors looked together.

Have you checked out my color combo site? It really helps to be able to see the colors together before you cut into your expensive CS. The other thing I would suggest is get a swatch booklet. That was the first thing I did when I got all the assortments! I made my own swatch book. I love that I can flip it around and put together different combos before I cut into my CS.
Here's the color combo site:

This is how I started as well. When I run out of a color, I know that it is one I have used more than others. I've bought full packs of real red and green galore for Christmas. Lately, I bought bravo burgundy, garden green, night of navy, and ballet blue. I know that's not one from each, but that's what I've bought. Oh, pixie pink too.

Mine would be... (Although DEFINITELY a tough decision)
EE: Not Quite Navy
RR: Handsome Hunter
BB: Real Red
SS: Mellow Moss
And yet, as I typed that out, I found myself thinking, "ooh, but what about...? And...?"
Yet I managed to restrain myself
Assorted packs are great, because when you have colours that you find you haven't used, you kind of force yourself to go outside your comfort zone, if only to use the colours you don't like!! And sometimes they become faves!!

BB: Real Red
EE: Chocolate Chip
RR: Elegant Eggplant
SS: Pretty in Pink (I have 2 little girls and this is a must have color)
When I last bought paper I bought one assorted pack of each color family and I have been really surprised at how long it has taken me to go through it. Then when I run out a color I by a pack of that. It's worked out nicely.

Wow, picking only one from each group is a tough decision. Here are the ones I use the most:
RR Always Artichoke
SS Apricot Appeal
EE Pumpkin Pie
BB Real Red
Personally, if you are going to buy 4 pads, I would pick a color group and for $1.70 more you could buy the spots. I would even suggest that you buy Stampin' Spots New Color Set because it has colors from every group, plus some neutrals.

Hmmm...
SS: Certainly Celery-it's good for baby cards of both sexes
RR: Elegant Eggplant-a rich color that is both masculine and feminine
EE: Pumpkin Pie-pretty!
BB: Real Red-no particular reason here..lol

I think this is a very interesting question, and am enjoying all the responses..hard to pick one..but here's mine:
EE - Creamy caramel
RR - Night of navy
SS - Certainly celery
BB - Glorious green
Also, let me add my 2 cents about the assorted color packs..I just got my last of the 4 families, and they are well worth the investment. I use a lot of non SU paper myself (gasp!), but the quality of the su paper is head and sholders above the rest, and the price is good when you do the math. It's great to have all the colors, and based on useage, I can determine what additonal papaer packs to order.

Excellent question!!
BB-- gable green
EE -- Cameo Coral
RR -- So Saffron
SS -- Bashful Blue
Good luck. I'm not a big fan of the assortment packs either -- I need lots of paper in one color. Makes me feel more secure LOL!!

I agree. These are great colors if you can pick only one from each family. In fact, I think I'm going to do a Celery/Eggplant/Pumpkin card today and see how that works. It seems good in my head!

Well my #1 color that I cannot live without is Creamy Caramel, but this is because I use it to watercolor, stamp AND sponge the edges of stuff to age it.
Then Cert. Celery (before it came out I was addicted to Mellow Moss) then Bravo Burgundy (I am probably alone on this one--but it is great for watercoloring) then Real Red (though that is only cuz I need to pick a BB color they are not my favorite)

SS: Celery
EE: Chocochip
BB: (my fav summer colors) with the 2 above I suppose Pixie Pink
RR: Saffaron
This is funny... I CAN'T DECIDE!!!!
I start on the next combo... I can't from just one...
YOU HAVE to get Black...
I layer almost everything on Chocolate Chip or B.Black!!! and then stamp with those colors for words, linestamps etc... of course I love to watercolor... and then I need the colors I watercolor with for my base card... too hard order it all!

Hmmm... First of all, I'm assuming you already have whisper white & basic black. Sahara Sand is also worth investing in. From there, I would have to choose:
RR: So Saffron or Night of Navy
EE: Ruby Red
SS: Certainly Celery or Mellow Moss
BB: Can't narrow it down to 1 or 2 - I don't use them very often, though
Sorry I couldn't follow your guidelines Have fun color shopping!!

Thanks for all your responses ladies.
I had sooo much fun playing with that color combo website last night...lol
I am placing an order over the weekend, so Hopefully I will have come to a decision by then. I like the assorted packs, but it never fails that when I make a card I really like, and need multiples of it (like for a swap) I run out of the main color, b/c I am using assorted...
I do ALWAYS have basic black and whisper white...I couldn't live without those.
thanks again ladies!!
