Exclamation I singed my carpet! A heat embossing tale

I was making a card this morning and it involved heat embossing. I was making the card in my dining room. When it came time to apply the heat, Einstein here decided to do it on the carpet. I have no idea what I was thinking (I guess I wasn't thinking that a heat tool could do that!). I mean the table was right there, or I could have used the floor. Anyway, the embossing came out great but when I lifted the cardstock up from the carpet, there was a nice little outline. It's not a complete rectangle but you can definitely see a shape of some sort. The carpet fibers are singed!!!! To top it all off, we are trying to get the house ready to sell!!! I'm hoping it won't be too noticeable when that time comes. Just wanted to share!

I've done the same thing. I ended up with a gorgeous rectangle (A2 size, of course) in the middle of my carpet. I guess I could always continue doing this, but make a checkerboard pattern in the carpet.

Glad I'm not the only one who does stupid things - was working on the kitchen counter & while trying to turn the gun so it wouldn't accidently blast the ink pad lid on the counter, it swiveled & scorched a dime size spot on my beautiful plaid wallpaper!

You think that's bad? I've done it TWICE. Once in my old house and once in my new house. You would think I would have learned after the first time. However, I think I can use this as a selling point with my husband that I need more stamping counter space. If I didn't have to work on the floor, I wouldn't have singed the carpet...hmmm.

I've never singed my carpet (thanks for warning me!), but I have accidentally melted ep onto my stovetop! I think it just added characeter, and gave it a nice bumpy texture! Oooops!

I cut out a rectangle on my cutting thingy and didn't realize that it wasn't on the cutting thingy so I have a lovely etched rectangle on my table. I haven't singed anything but my fingers as I was holding something while embossing it and had some powder on my finger which melted onto me....OUCH!! I had a big 'ol blister...now I use a tweezers!:-D

I had the blade of a hot knife break off (while cutting rubber), drop on the lino and scorch two spots (the second was when I couldn't QUITE pick up the small blade while wearing big ole oven gloves and dropped it again...)

Happy to know I'm in good company, LOL!

I was at my sisters last week and she had never heat embossed. Well she made a small tag and wanted to emboss on it and held it in her hand. She turned on the heat gun and I screamed at her to stop her from burning herself, well she ended up dropping the gun and burned the carpet.. Better than her hand I guess.

O.K. I was dry embossing one day and put my light table on the arm of the sofa,( I have the smaller light table that is just a piece of plastic covering a light bulb), and the bulb touched the fabric and left a big melted spot. Oops am I bad.

Oh! How frustrating!

Many years ago my sewing machine foot pedal singed the carpet in just the same awful way.

If you take a pair of nail/manicure type scissors--or the craft equivalent--you can snip just the very singed end of the carpet thread off, and while it will make a little lower spot, it will not be as obvious as the burned ends of the carpet threads.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one!!! However, I didn't do this making a card! It was picture day at school for my little one and I noticed a little stain on the sweater. I quickly washed the stain out and thought, "Hey, I'll use my Heat Embossing Gun...that thing will dry it quickly!" After all, it was just a little spot! Like a ding-a-ling, I laid the sweater on the carpet in the dinning room and it did in fact dry quite quickly, but now I have a singed dinning room carpet (appently, like many other stampers...LOL!)

Bummer about the carpet mishaps. Sounds like something I would do! On the plus side, the heat gun does work wonderfully for loosening linoleum to remove it from your floor. I was having a devil of a time getting some up, and my heat gun arrived about that time. The instructions say that's what it's really for. So I tried it - worked great!

I don't have a funny story to add - just a helpful hint...

I saved the heavy duty cardboard backing from a writing tablet (8 x 11 inches) and covered it in foil. When I emboss, I use a wooden clothes pin (the kind with the spring) to hold my item to be embossed onto the cardboard, and I hold the cardboard above any surface I may be working on.

My daughter singed the carpet in her room with her curling iron. I lived with it for a number of years. Then we had these carpet cleaners come in and she asked if she could work on it. She carefully snipped the top of the fibers off and voila! you wouldn't have known it ever happened! We do have a sculptured hi/low carpet which helped.

I have also done this and I did as the other ladies have said...just carefully clip the top fibers with a nail scissor. It does work, but do it carefully. LOL!

I'm so going to have my hubby read this thread. We too have a nice little backwards "L" in the carpet in the office.

This thread is cracking me up! No singed carpet, yet, but I do have a nice brown stazon imprint on my jeans (yep, pad landed face down) and enough glitter and embossing powder permanently imbedded in the carpet to do many cards!

I have one of these stories. I have an office in our house with all my scrapping/stamping stuff. However, I don't like to be isolated in there when I am perfectly happy sitting on the floor in the living room using the coffee table. So I drag everything out to the living room. Right before Christmas, I was stamping on the candles and accidentally dropped a hot candle on to the edge of my sofa, granted my sofa needs replacing (had it since 1997) and I do cover that end with a blanket because the cats like to sleep there but it's GOSH DARN IT! I got most of it off but that section of the sofa is now kind of rough.

I guess it's a small price to pay for being a happy crafter! hehe!

No carpet disasters here, but some years ago I was wearing shortalls (yikes, that's embarassing to admit) and was embossing holding the paper way too close to my chest and melted the Levis label on the front pocket. I had to remove the label and there was always a darker square of denim there.

We did this at a Stamp Camp hosted by my upline. She didn't want her husband to find out, so she moved the t.v. stand to cover it up!

Yah, I'v burned my carpet, also, opening the mail on the table when I had a scented candle burning and dropped the mail started on fire, I threw it off the table and it ended up on the carpet, I also snipped top fibers, but it is still noticible. SCENTED CANDLES ALSO burn really hot

My favorite is my younger sister was embossing something and she wasn't paying attention to what she was doing. She was holding the paper down towards her legs and using the heat tool. She was trying not to melt the plastic cover we lay down on my mom's table when we stamp.

All of sudden something smelled like it was burning. Then we saw smoke. She had burned a hole in my mom's dining room chair. My mom wouldn't have been annoyed but she and my dad had just recovered all of the chairs the week before and it was a huge pain. We still point out the burn hole to people when they come over to stamp.

I did this same thing with my light table from JoAnns. I have a pea-size hole burned in my throw pillow that matches my sofa and loveseat. Dh thought I was nuts when I did it. And of course, I was working in the family room so I could spend time with him and still craft.

Oh my gosh! I would have kicked myself. And then rearranged the furniture! LOL! I hope it isn't too bad. My mom burnt a hole in my couch with a light table. That was bad enough, I can't imagine the carpet. Oh dear!

Default Me, too!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I did the same thing about a year ago. I dropped some embossing powder on the carpet and I guess the heat was too close. Long story short, there is a small patch of melded fibers right in the middle of the room!

Ahh yes, I've done this as well. It was a pretty new carpet so I was very sad and then yesterday I found an entire bottle of Crystal Effects bottle I had left empty tipped over and all on my rug. What a sticky disaster!
