Default I need help with a sensitive card request

A neighbor of mine requested four cards from me. One of them is for a friend whose pug was killed by a coyote. She seems to want the card personalized for the situation in some way, but I just can't wrap my head around how to make that happen tastefully.

I have some pet papers from JoAnn's that include a pawprint pattern and a sheet with cartoony dog faces, including a pug. I also got a pawprint stamp, but I'm not thinking I can spend any more money acquiring things for one card. Please help me come up with something - I need to get this done soon but I'm completely stumped!

I would think that using an image of the right breed of dog would be a good way to "personalize" for this kind of card. If you feel the cartoonish quality of the ones you have is not suitable, try googling something like "pug dog free clip art" and you'll get lots of sources for things you can print. I just tried a search and off the first few hits, this silhouette struck me as something you could easily use for a pet sympathy card.

Good luck with it, hope your neighbour is pleased with whatever you come up with.

Thanks for the silhouette suggestion - I think that will work, as long as my crappy printer is up to the job! I'll try it and see.

We have a coyote that lives in the woody area behind our house, I watch my little Cocker like a hawk, good thing she has two big brothers, both labs! Poor little Pug, can't even begin to image what it's owners feel.

It's so sad - we live in a small town outside Boston about 45 minutes. We know it has some rural areas but this is the first I'd heard about coyotes in town. Last week there was a bear spotted several places around town!

Here's the card I ended up making. My neighbor liked it - I hope her friends can find some comfort somehow.

That's a fabulous card - I'm sure she'll treasure it.

A dear friend lost her precious cat Scout and was grief-stricken. She keeps the card I made for her next to the box with Scouts ashes. It touched me to know the card meant that much to her.

I'm currently a SAHM but my background is in the veterinary field. One of my jobs was to select the sympathy cards we sent to clients and it is always really difficult to find the right balance. You did an incredible job - the card is tasteful, beautiful, and personal. I love it.

Very nicely done Lori. The sentiment I like to use is "Faithtful friends will always leave paw prints on your heart." Appropriate for dog or cat families. Our 5 year old Maltese was attacked when (we think) a coyote jumped our 8 foot wall-we're in the city limits, but near a golf course and wash. Somehow he got away, and has made a full recovery. Scarey times.

Thanks, everyone. I hope I don't need to make another card like this again, but I definitely learned something by doing it. Thanks again to Joanne for pointing me to the silhouette clip art and I will have to remember dlandau's sentiment for the future.

Yes, very beautifully done. When I read your original post, I thought the same as you -- just how "personalized to the situation" can this card be and not get a little strange or distasteful?
But I think you did great. And it made me think that by "personalized", probably your neighbour envisioned something specific to loss of a pet dog, rather than an all-purpose sympathy card (which often hints at human loss and inadvertently implies that's the only kind that matters). Including the actual breed of dog, in silhouette to let it be any pug the viewer imagines, just perfect. Bravo.

Your card is perfect ... How very sad for the dog parents ... We have a pug and I just can't imagine this.

One of my friends always puts her outside cats up at night in the garage to protect them from coyotes. She has to keep a litter box in there, but it is much better that they are safe! We had some closeby not too long ago (we're in a populated neighborhood surrounded by a field or two).
I'm so sad for the people that lost their dog! You did a wonderful job on your card. It is beautiful and just personal enough!
