Before I go out and send money on embossing, I just would like to know how often you emboss? I have the Sizzix embossing folders, but that is something different then heat embossing. So, how often do u emboss?
I have no Sizzix or big shot or cuttlebug or anything like that-the only dry embossing I do is with the brass stencils so i cannot help ya there (sorry). I am too nervous that I will buy a system and it will sit like lots of other goodies in my stamp room, LOL. :mrgreen:

Heat emboss?? Almost every time I stamp. I really like the way clear emboss over craft ink raises the image. Sometimes I'll just stamp images and emboss and make cards later. At least twice a week. (or more if I am able to stamp more often.)
Non-heat emboss... almost never.

Thank you for talking about both heat and non, because I hardly ever use the Sizzix folders. Maybe I will splurge and get the heat emboss. I just have been collecting lately and not really making anything. I need some motivation
I heat emboss when I feel like getting up and plugging in the gun. I got paranoid after someone posted that their cat had hit the gun accidently and burned stuff when she wasn't home!
Dry embossing? I don't own any stencils...nor do I have a Cuttlebug or anything, so I only get to do that when I am working at MIchaels.
I love heat embossing and there's really no subsitute for it. You can do faux metal and burned batik. I use it on probably 1 out of every 5 cards I make but contantly at Chistmas.

I heat emboss a lot. I never could see the point in dry embossing (maybe after I've stamped more I'll see the light).
My favorite thing about heat embosing is that you can get an elegant look with almost no extra embellishments. (Think fast and easy Christmas cards). I also like the pop you get from embossing with clear powder.

I read that thread too so I now have a power strip plugged in, setting on my stamp table that I plug my heat gun into, then just turn off the power strip when not in use. So much easier and I figure the cord on the heat tool will last longer with out all that plugging and unplugging.

Probably about 25% of my cards are heat embossed. But my most spectacular cards are usually heat embossed. There is nothing more elegant than some simple silver or gold embossing!

i read about this too and was concerned because i left mine on my desk but now i store it in a drawer... Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
when i first got the heat gun and some powders i used it like crazy... i don't use it nearly as much but i think sense your in the 'collecting faze' anyway you should get it. then it is there when you decide you need it.
as for not making things right now... check out the challenges! they are FUN! and get your creative juices flowing!

Try the weekly challenges--they are awesome motivation. (Also, it can help to have a "jumping off place".)
I also would suggest to start making stuff before buying more--find out what you like and don't like first. It can actually make buying stuff more fun.:mrgreen:
I heat emboss probably 90% of the time. I do dry emboss also. All of my Valentine cards were embossed and I made 23 of those! I have a cricut, but I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get a cuttlebug too!

Ditto for all the heat embossing comments made. I heat emboss almost all of my cards. Guy cards-not quite as much. I do dry emboss, but it is a time consuming, and intricate work; but the results are outstanding...pun intended!
I used to hate it and think it was too much trouble, but now I emboss on almost every card I make.
Two things made me change my mind.
1. I got the craft spots so I can emboss all 48 colors with only clear embossing powder.
2. I keep a big Ziplock tub of clear embossing powder available so I can just dip my paper in or spoon embossing powder on my card over the tub and tap off the excess. Quick and simple.
OMG, you girls who have heat guns and have never used them are really missing out. Heat embossing just gives you the most wonderful raised shiny line. It obviously doesn't work on bold images but on outline images it looks amazing.

Also, if you are a nervous watercolorer it is brilliant for stopping your colors running.
I think you only need clear, silver, gold and white to start with and if you don't have any pigment inks, just versamark your stamp first, then use your dye ink.
My one piece of advice for heat embossing, don't buy black embossing powder, it is the worst one for straying and leaving horrible spots all over your work. Use black pigment and clear powder instead.

if you stamp in versamark and then in ink you can emboss with clear and your only color limitation is the ink colors you have! just thought i'd share my little trick!
I heat emboss all the time. It is especially good for scrapbooking because it sets the craft ink and becomes archival.
I use it on letters all the time. No more sticker sheets of letters and using up all the As, Es and other favorite letters and having a bunch of useless ones left over. Yes, I know you can use a V upside down with a little piece across it and all those clever tricks but there are only 2 Vs in the thing anyway.
I couldn't do without it. Use the clear embossing stuff most often and seldom the jars of the coloured stuff.
Ok. Do I read this right? First you tap your stamp on a clear VersaMark and then on a dye pad and them onto the paper before you add the clear embossing powder. I've never used the clear VersaMark first. Why is that important? Or am I just not understanding?
I heat emboss all the time. What everyone said about simplle elegant cards is right on. This was my favorite Christmas card last year and it's just white embossing powder on Navy card stock -- one layer, no ribbon, no embellishments, etc. no extra postage :-). And quick too! I learned to stamp using heat embossing first. It wasn't until years later that I started doing what I call "flat" stamping. I love the elegance of heat embossing. I have also always done the dry embossing with the stencils (the hard way) The embossing folders sure beat that!!! I have a Zip-E-mate and the folders work in that so I am happy. No pets or children to worry about so my heat gun stays plugged in at my desk.

Heat embossing really provides a polished look to line images. I haven't dry embossed by hand in quite a long time...but sure love my Cuttlebug for creating some fantastic background designs.

the versamark is 'sticky' and keeps the ink from drying too fast to apply the EP for heating. if you have 'craft' ink you don't need the versamark. i don't have craft inks (except white) so i use the versamark technique.
I don't heat emboss as often as I think I should be always love it when I do. I don't dry emboss by hand but do use my Cuttlebug whenever I get the chance.

I was like you -- I wanted to make sure I would use the heat embossing equipment before I bought it.
What I have found is that, yes, i do use it alot. I have found that CLEAR embossing powder is a MUST. As well, I've used white, gold and silver a lot too. I have bronze but I don't use it that much.
I do not have any of the SU colored embossing powders -- I just don't know how much I would use them. Besides, if you buy craft spot ink, you can just use the clear over that and have all the colors anyway.
As for the dry embossing - I don't own any of the fancy machines but I do love dry embossing by hand. It also adds an elegant touch. However, I believe I am a bit weird, as I prefer to make stuff by hand while others tend to use equipment or pre-made stuff.

Just wanted to share- a big bold stamp can be used for emboss resist- like this Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
I stamped the flowers in versamark on glossy CS, heat embossed with crear EP- then stamped over with the leaves and sponged a little cool carribean around the outside. Then I wiped off any color on the flowers.
I used heat embossing more at the beginning of my stamping. Now I think I use more of a variety of techniques and less heat. Ii do use it anytime that I want to use watercolors, however, as it keeps the color in the lines better>

Hello, my name is Bad Bev and I am addicted to embossing. I can't remember the last time I made a card that didn't have something embossed somewhere. The only time my heat gun has been unplugged in 9 years was when I moved my Rubber Room from a small room into a bigger one.
Before I go out and send money on embossing, I just would like to know how often you emboss? I have the Sizzix embossing folders, but that is something different then heat embossing. So, how often do u emboss?
My demo calls me the embossing queen! I was at one of her stamp camps and she decided that my challenge would be to not emboss - I failed! I love, love love to emboss:-D
