Default How does Aliexpress work?

I checked out Aliexpress and saw some crafty items that I must have. How does it work? Is it like eBay where you buy items from various sellers or does the money go through Aliexpress? If you've ordered before, how was your experience? Thanks in advance!

I love Aliexpress but I only buy cheap items. I feel like I'm taking a chance every time i order something. That being said...I have ordered a lot! Tons of silicone molds for clay, nail art supplies, beads etc. I'm not sure how the money works, they have my CC on file. Items take a very long time to arrive most of the time. Sometimes I get surprised when a tiny package arrives sooner than expected. After you get your order you log back into Aliexpress and mark that it was received and leave feedback. If you have an issue with an order you just email the place you ordered from. I've had to do that once when I got the wrong item and they sent the correct one right away. It is very easy to get addicted to ordering $1 items on there. They also have a phone app you can order from.

Psst BluDragon....Did you know if you put silicon caulking (like the stuff you would use to caulk a tub) in your silicone molds it will set up nicely and release well with no warping?

Thanks BluDragon. Since shipping is free I think I'll take a chance with a small order.

I've had good experiences with Ali Express and purchased many craft supplies there, as well as scarves and costume jewelry. I've been happy with everything I received. Only once an item never arrived, and they credited my account within a couple of hours of my notifying them.

oh cool, never tried that. I like that silicone can go in the oven too. Some of the molds I bought are a bit too soft but work fine with soft clay. To remove without warping I just chill the mold with the clay in it.

Nancy, thanks for your reviews; a lot of food for thought. I've been on the fence about buying here but I MIGHT take the plunge.

I just popped over to check out the stamp offerings and I'm seeing current products from Hero Arts, My Favorite Things, Dina Wakely, and Heidi Swapp (even had her packaging!).............and that's only 3 pages in. For purchasing stamps I'll stick to the ones I know are 'name' brands.

I have, I only order product less than $10. It takes over 3 months to get to Canada, so don't buy anything you are desperate for lol! but everything I have ordered has arrived, is as described and pretty good quality.

So, here's an update... I've received most of the dies I ordered over the last 3 days. More are due to arrive any day. So far, I'm extremely pleased with the quality and overall experience. You can't beat the price for sure. It took about 10-12 days for them to arrive here Ga (USA). I used a pre-paid VISA card and the amount is not deducted until you notify them it has been received. I'll order again!

I wanted to check back in to say that I placed several orders from Aliexpress and goodies are starting to hit my mailbox. So far I've received several die sets that have performed beautifully in my Cuttlebug. I did need to use a metal shim for one set, but that is not unusual for certain dies. I am so amazed at the low prices and free shipping!

I did take a chance and purchase one stamp set since I had heard mixed reviews. It was a fairy set with a couple of mushrooms and it performed well on my test. In my opinion you definitely need a stamp platform, but my new Tim Holtz platform did the trick.

Thanks for all your advice!

Latest on AliExpress dies.....I recently ordered a set which looked like it went with the Stampin' Up Beautiful You stamp set. Mistake! Back and forth discussion on why they don't work and the upshot is that the dies do not fit the SU stamps, they make their own stamps in China which look very similar. So if you find the die set on the website and want it for your SU stamps, don't buy it! Mine will go into the trash.

I'll add that I gave Aliexpress a try after seeing it mentioned on here. I've ordered loads of dies over the last few months, all have arrived, and almost every one cuts without problems. A couple of really intricate ones needed shimming, but I've had to do that with far more expensive intricate dies. And for the price of their dies,I can't find any fault.
Do check sizes when ordering, occasionally they look bigger than they are- but that was just my fault for not checking.
Overall, no complaints. They do take a while to arrive, but free shipping from China is never going to be fast. I will be having a look at the silicone mould later!
They take Paypal, which is how I prefer to pay online.
Link HERE to my blog post on the dies I bought, with examples of how they cut.

The only thing I'd add - and it's a personal choice - is that there are stolen, copyrighted designs sold on Aliexpress, Alibaba and other Chinese companies. Not all, of course. There's a reporting system artists can use, but claims against China? Unrealistic. So I won't buy from them.

I agree with many that some companies in the U.S. charge too much for their dies, but the theft is a sticking point, especially since many small craft companies are struggling to survive. Of course YMMV. : )

I tend to agree with this opinion.

What bothers me the most is that almost all the small, locally owned stamp/scrapbook stores have gone out of business. So we are left with the same old tired selection at the big chain stores, and I, at least, sorely miss the classes that these local stores used to offer. Why did they go out of business? Well, in part because they could not compete with the internet shopping. For my own part, I won't chase a cheaper price in China because you end up losing more, locally. IMHO, of course.

I do agree there are a lot of obviously copied designs on there, I recall seeing the TH dies of the witch & cat, and spooky house on there. But, I also saw, and bought a lot of designs that either are retired from big name lines, or I've never seen here in the UK. And there are many 'generic' designs of basic shapes, which lots of brands have released. But I agree, I'd personally avoid those I see as design copies.

JMHO, I will not take a chance on anything from these places. I don't want to "accidentally" purchase stolen designs.

Default Still on pinching designs....

Visited a friend who has a bunch of these cheap dies. They are really nice, so understand the temptation. She also showed me a couple of stamp sets, definitely copied from the brand names, including TH and Stampin' Up.

But I'd like to know why SU's dies are so expensive, especially here in Australia, when they are made in China as well! No wonder people want to buy cheaper craft stuff if they feel they are being ripped off.

If people buy the stolen design stamps and matching dies they are certainly getting a good deal. My friend said she will now only buy SU if she 'has' to.

Having said all that though, I am also not in favour of cheap Chinese goods putting our people out of business. But it does seem as if we are fighting a losing battle....

I have looked at the site a few times but wasn’t sure how the whole payment thing worked. Is it just one payment or is it several payments to each place? Was very confused by it so haven’t tried it yet but want too. Thanks for the help.

You just make one single payment- it's very much like E-Bay. Even if it's a number of vendors you are buying from, you just make one payment that covers all. Hth.

After making a few purchases I discovered this. It explains how we can get this super cheap or free shipping from China. Turns out that it isn't cheap or free at all - it's just compliments of the US government:
As U.S. Postage Rates Continue To Rise, The USPS Gives The Chinese A 'Free Ride'

My chinese stamp/die buying days are over.

The odd thing is, that the free shipping is not only to the US- it's to here in the Uk, and I know crafters in Australia who get it too. Could the subsidy be from the Chinese government? I can't read the article, as it doesn't like the fact I have an Ad Blocker, lol.

Please think twice about buying stolen designs, and items that infringe on copyrights, just because they are cheap. It's stuff like this that has helped to put so many of our local scrapbook & stamp stores out of business. And when they close their doors, we lose the personal attention, the convenient classes, the ability to touch and feel before we buy. That bargain has a higher hidden cost to it.

It seems to be set by some UN agency. This part of the article discusses it:

"International postage rates for incoming packages are set by a U.N. agency called the United Postal Union (UPU). This is a body that was established in 1874 -- subsequently being absorbed into the U.N. -- that is currently made up of 192 countries which meets every four years to revise its policy and set new terminal fees, with each country getting one vote a piece. While the voting system of the UPU is egalitarian, the shipping rates that it sets are not. According to Nancy Sparks of FedEx Express (via eCommerceBytes.com), the rate structure of the UPU is a system where the ďhaves pay the have-nots.Ē Essentially, countries that it deems to be poorer or less developed pay less for shipping to countries that are categorized as being richer. So someone shipping from, say, China, will pay significantly less to ship to a country like the U.S. than an American shipper will pay to send that same package to China."

Whilst I have to totally agree about copyright theft, and will say that I avoid designs I know I have seen elsewhere, if it is a die I wanted, but is now discontinued, for instance, then I will buy. As I will if it's a die I think I might use once in a blue moon. Like a Motorcycle die I bought a while ago. I may use it once every couple of years, so could never justify buying one that cost me at least 10 times as much.
The thing that does really annoy me with this, is what I perceive as a sort of hypocrisy in the craft products manufacturing world. I can't tell now how many BIG names I'm seeing, where there products have Made in China boldly imprinted on the items- yet this is not reflected in the prices they are charging the consumers. They are still charging what they did when products were made in the USA/UK/Etc. They are actively sending their designs abroad- and I'm sorry, but I really do not believe they do not know what will happen with copies of their designs! For how savvy they are at making money, that doesn't hold water, I'm afraid. I see it as being accepted as an acceptable price for getting their products made cheaply, thus making them much more profit and covering their 'losses'.
On the free shipping, although we do get it to us, one way we can get tripped up is in import duty. Not just from China either. I've had it on goods ordered from the USA. It's pretty random, some parcels get through no problem, others get questioned. We can only order goods up to about £20 before we get charged Import Duty, plus a fee from the Post Office for collecting it, and that can often be more than the duty!

I'd never heard of WISH before - it looks like it carries much of what AliExpress does. Some of the items I'm familiar with have shipping costs on WISH that they don't on AliExpress. Either way, I'm a fan of AliExpress for some items. I'll always buy stamps sets that I love and want to last me from the big names. They make some big bucks off me. But if there's something cute that I could imagine using once or twice, I'll toss it in my cart. I was never going to buy it in the first place if it wasn't a love love love set for me, so for $2 bucks I'm a-ok with spending the money for something that doesn't need to last me and I'll rarely use. I found a bunch of super cute gift bags too that I bought to use when I give away some of my gift sets of cards. And little cosmetic bags that I use to store some of my markers. Plus they have some fun storage items you can use for crafting too under other categories. It's a fun site to look around in. I currently have some ribbons in my cart to order from them. I'm a total sucker for ribbon, it has my heart always, lol. Especially Stampin Up ribbons.

Iíve been seeing tv commercials for Wish, and wondering what it was. I still havenít bothered to see what it is, but they imply something for everyone in the family.
Is it also a China based?

I have shopped at both Wish and AliExpress. Wish has shipping costs that are often higher than the purchase price of the item. They also don't care if you get the wrong item, or never receive an item. I don't shop there anymore.

I order alot from AliExpress - or should I say my teenagers order a lot and I order some. They buy clothing, accessories, gadgets, and things - I don't let them buy makeup from China because of quality control. I buy quite a bit of craft things there. They arrive quicker than Wish, and as someone mentioned above, if you get the wrong item or don't get the item they issue refunds promptly (has only happened once).

I don't worry about copyright on some things - for instance stitched rectangle dies or circles or fishtail banners...seems like every single die company sells the same ones. I can't tell a difference in cutting quality. Also things like brads, eyelets, bone folders, designer paper, rhinestones, and so on. Anything that is very generic.

I do buy stamps from them if I see something unique. I have purchased stamp sets and later seen them from big name companies, and I do buy sets from them that I can't get here due to them being sold out or retired. I do not purposely buy images that I know are available elsewhere. There is a definite quality difference in the feel of the stamp, but the stamped images? Not so much.

I tried their version of copics - don't waste your money. I also tried some ink pads and watercolor pencils and found them lacking. (I put together an art box for my grandkids and tried out all of the materials.)

The US companies charge way too much and are pricing themselves out of range of alot people. Especially on products made in China! Really, if the choice is $40 for a made in China die set, or $2 for a made in China die set, who can blame them?

The other difference I did see is WISH has some listings for brand name stamps - but it was odd, it was for more money than everywhere else we can buy those sets from, at least in the US. It made me wonder if these particular postings were legit or knocks off's pretending to be the big names. Or it may very well be the big names available on a site marketed I think to all countries like AliExpress is. Just another difference I noticed. I'm bummed to hear they don't care if you get the wrong thing. AliExpress is so good about that!!! Is WISH their competition or is there anything that substantially sets them apart in a positive way?
