Default How do you use ATCs?

I love making ATCs, but don't use them much once I've made them. How do you like to use them?

I used one on a card I made today. You can see it on my blog if you care to look.

Use? I thought they were for keeping FOREVER. The extras, though, I thought would make good cards or gift tags.

See that's a question I've been asking myself too. Not that I've ever made one.

oh, okay on a more serious note.... there are a few other things you could do with them,
besides putting them in baseball card albums,

use them for cards, tags and scrapbook pages .

you could sort them by theme, color, favourites and traders etc. (Depends on how obsessive you are....!:rolleyes

But I have seen gals that have displayed them in very creative ways. some have made frames or pictures out of them. They've chosen a favorite color or theme and mounted them.

Sorta like making a paper quilt out of them.

Or just mounted their fav one.

Some one has placed them under glass and put them on their coffee table.

Another idea is to put them all around your makeup mirror or your craft room mirror and display your fav's

Or you could layer your tray and modgepodge them onto a box or a tray and display them.

I've seen them hung on a tree as decorations.

How about making a mobile out of some of them?

I've also seen serious displays of 100's of them at an art show too.... ( show and share time)

Well, just a few ideas off the top of my head. I'm sure the gals can think of more!

If you don't want to just make and trade with other ATC makers, you can always use them as focal points on other papercraft projects. The first of these is a card, the second is a booklet of "coupons" to give as a gift (for things like a night of baby sitting, a dozen freshly-baked muffins etc - I did a tutorial on making the booklet here).

Attach to a tag, and make a bookmark. Or add to a card.

The first Scripture Challenge I hosted in 2008 I used ATCs. Love them! I am looking at it right now. It sits on my desk and is beautiful! I have 52 favorite scriptures right here. Some people are doing ATCs for this year's Scripture Challenge too. I chose a 6x6 album this year but ATCs are awesome for scriptures. Here is what mine looks like from 2008:

Thanks,

You can find it at the ATC Store. Lots of other scrapbook and stamp stores have it online too. Hope that helps. It is a great holder. I have an extra to do something with too. Can't wait to make another one!

Great thread. I too enjoy making and receiving ATCs. I have used them on cards (I don't think is sacreligious to send them on to new homes) and I have many that I have kept because they are so beautiful. Love the holder.

Just for those of you (like me!) who didn't know what an ATC is, I just found out that it is an Artist Trading Card and it is 2 X 3".

(this was driving me crazy not knowing what you all were talking about, so I followed all the links till I found a blog that told what the secret acronym stood for...lol!)

Patter, that is super duper cute. I'm putting that on my list of future projects! How much time did it take for you to make it?

Thinking of using that for next years teacher gift too... Maybe have each kid in the class decorate a card...?

Wow, y'all, great ideas--and neat projects, too! Thanks!

Susan, I'm sorry I wasn't clear in my original post about what an ATC is. Probably should have added a little warning too--once you've discovered them, it's easy to get addicted!

I made my first atc's back in April....when I first saw my challenge I didn't know what to do with them until I added them to this card:
Connected ATC's

I love the other ideas too.

A few of my customers love ATCs, and so I've join a monthly ATC crop, not necessarily SU, although I've done SUO.

The ATC "rules": ATCs must be 2 1/2 X 3 1/2 inches; traded not sold; have the "name of the ATC" , name of artist, # of how many made[1/5], date - on the back to be a proper ATC.
So for my SU convention swaps I should have 'Fish Punch', 1/20, Stasia Todd, 7/16/10 on the back of the ATC. [I'll be lucky to have my basic SU info: name, email.]

Just thought you should know the "rules."

My group save their ATCs in baseball plastic holders. SU sold ATC albums; I bought one, and everyone loves it. I wish I had bought more for myself.

When I started with SU I thought of an ATC as a small canvas for our creative ideas - Make it small and get the idea for a card front. Now I realize it's an art form in itself.

I loved the ideas for using the ATCs that was previously written. For those who just want to enjoy a new art medium - Try it, you'll like it!

Default ATC's

I am a member of the Technique Junkies newsletter, and regularly participate in an on-going swap where we trade ATC's using techniaues from any newsletter (past or current). It is great because I get samples of techniques I have not (or maybe am not interested in )trying. They are like an autograph of a paper crafter too! I keep mine in a binder and look through them frequently. ATC's are a great way to try something new too!

Thanks, Traci! It took me a year only because it was part of the Scripture Challenge I hosted. I only did a card a week for the entire year. It certainly could go much faster!

After so long of making/trading/swapping ATC;s I had accumulated so many. It seemed a shame that I had no one to share them with so I did start incorporating them into many of my paper projects, mostly cards. I love that some else is able to enjoy them .

I display ATCs I've made on one of those 7 Gypsies carousels. The ones I've swapped for I keep in a binder in trading card pages. Like anything else I like to look at, I'll pull out the binder and look through it or give the carousel a twirl and enjoy the cards all over again.

ATCs are fun...and addictive!!! I have to agree with nearly all the comments here -- I am a hoarder myself, but I have seen amazing cards made with them, and they are just the right size to "pet" while you browse for ideas.

Also, they are a GREAT way to try out new techniques or ideas while risking very little in terms of materials. You can get 10 "bases" from a single sheet of 8.5 x 11" paper!!!

There are many ATC swaps going on in the swap threads right now. If you would like to try them out on a small scale, come and join us -- I am hosting a 5 for 5 Summer Vacation ATC swap and we would love more players (newbies welcome)!!!

(5 for 5 means you make 5 ATCs and get 5 different ones in return)

I gotta say... I'm a tactile gal so just being able to touch and feel them lowers my blood pressure!

I also enjoy keeping them because they represent many, many other gifted artists from all over the world. It is fun to be able to show my grandkids the cards and explain a bit about each artist ie: "she lives in Japan and has a son about your age". It gives them a change to be exposed to places other than home. We all need our horizons widened, don't we?

I have been making ATC's for about 6 years. I have about 8 binders FULL of them. I never give them away, I never put them on a card. I have to keep each and everyone of them. From time to time, I look at them. I {heart} ATC's. HA HA

2.5 x 3.5 is the FINISHED size, so any layering, embellishment, etc. has to fit within that size.

A lot of people keep them in protective sleeves that fit baseball cards or the like, so anything that hangs over the edge makes them harder to store and protect.

I have another thought on using ATC's on cards, etc. If they are not ones that you have made it would be polite to give credit to the artist somewhere on your finished piece.

I only make ATC once a year for my retreat where we swap ATCs. I've been keeping all the swaps and never looked at them. This year I cut them into inchies instead of tossing them out. Now I have a great supply of inchies ready for my next project.

I can only imagine ... they are probably trying to find my address to have a little visit with me to discuss my destuction of valuable goods; however they should think a positive thought in that at least I'm using them for a good purpose.
